The bank wouldn't need a W9 form since that is a request for taxpayer information (SS#).  They already have that info, it was given to them when you opened the account.

Turns out it's for real. From their compliance dept. I told them they're idiots to ask for this info by email. It's stupid that after so many years they ask for my birth date. Also they use the fourdivits of my SS# for verification and then do t know my full number cause they don't know it? BS. I hate B of A I never would have used them if Countrywide hadn't gone under and attached them to me.

I got the BoA letter today, not a call, and it had the 844 number listed as the contact, which is not the same number that appears on my card or on my monthly statements. Included were IRS forms W-9 and W-8BEN, presumably downloaded directly from the IRS site and printed out to include with the cover letter requesting I fill them out and mail back to a PO box in Phoenix. The urgent tone of the letter was the first clue this was a scam, and as you probably know, it's little telltale signs that tend to give scammers away. Here, since it wasn't a phone call (weird accents, busy cubicle noises in background, etc.), the gradually escalating urgent tone - if I didn't comply they might have to drill any safety deposit boxes I maintained?!? Right. I'm hiding a lot of stuff from BoA in my box. - convinced me it was definitely a scam. Plus, my regular BoA statements include my credit card number and the last 4 digits of my social, but this letter did not. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SNAIL MAIL PHISHING SCAM. Anybody in this forum who claims they confirmed with BoA that it is legit ARE PART OF THE SCAM, make no mistake.

I am not part of the scam.  I received the letter ~10/8/17 asking for DOB.  It is in fact real.  (Or at least mine was.)

The scary words about closing accounts and drilling out locks in safe deposit boxes also convinced me it was probably a scam, so I called the published BofA 800 number.  The rep didn't know, but said she'd call the number.  After a long wait, she brought someone else on the line, who assured me it was all legit.

Since I wasn't positive the original rep hadn't been duped, I carried the letter into our local branch and asked about its authenticity.  I was assured with 100% confidence that the letter was legit, and part of a known cleanup effort to get old accounts in compliance.

Of course reports of spam calls from 1-844-253-3707 are completely irrelevant to the letter:  The scammers can spoof any caller ID number they choose.

If you're still not convinced, don't call the 844 number, call the published 800 number and get past the robot answering system to a human by repeatedly asking to "speak to a representative".

The number is good. I got a very official looking letter from Bank of America in the mail asking me to call this number and update some information (there were other options besides calling). I called the number on the back of my credit card first, and they verified that the number was valid. All they actually needed from me was a physical address in addition my PO box (this was not a requirement when I got the card 20 years ago), and I gave that to them over the phone.

Before I did anything I looked up the telephone number on this site.  Well, the answers go both ways.  So I called the number of there English general inquiry number for fraud, 8004321000.  After waiting 20 minutes, i finally got a lady and asked if the number was legit, she said it was.  I said with things like Compliance Dept, Control Number, and Reference Number it looked like a scam.  She said go to the local BofA and so I went and talked to an officer there.  The only thing I have from BofA is a mortgage with my spouse that will be paid off in SIX MONTHS.  The other wierd thing is that they sent the say letter to my BROTHER at my address.  He doesn't live here.  He is part owner of an LLC company with me and my spouse.  Yes, the letter I received was legit and I handled it in person.  I recommend that every person who gets one of these letters do that, go to BoA in PERSON.  THey already had my info and I just confirmed it.  Then the letter was shredded.  End of story.

I received mail saying that if I didn't return the included form or call in they would close my accounts.   I do have a credit card with them so I tried calling the number on the back but the computerized system couldn't verify me using the last four digits of my SSN and I was transferred to a verification department.  The on-hold message there told me that it would be a long wait.   I hung up and tried calling the number on the mail.   They asked my name, which I gave and then tried for the last four of my SSN, which I didn't give.   I *think* that this is really BOA but it seems like they had a major screw up and lost all of my info.   Based on that, if this really is real, I don't feel like I should be banking with them anyway because of terrible computer work going on at their company.   Time will tell if my card really will be canceled.

I got a letter from Bank of America yesterday.  This number is listed on the letter as their customer service number and has the same language that others reported (opening safe deposit boxes by drilling the lock if they don't get the requested info by March 21st).  I only have an HSA account with BofA.  Logged onto my account and this information is not required for my profile.  Called the number on the back of my HSA card.  The gentleman said that this letter did not sound familiar and that this information is not requierd for my HSA account.  I told him that I could scan the document and email it to them.  He said to email it to abuse@bankofamerica.com.  If anyone else gets this letter, scan the letter, the reply envelope and the envelope that the letter came in and send to above email address.  I also went on the US Postal Service site and reported it as mail fraud.

This might be valid. I called this number on the letter I received. The woman said BOA does audits of their accounts, and they'll contact the account owner if they find missing info. She said to call BOA directly and ask for the Compliance Department if I wanted to verify what she was saying. Otherwise, she recommended I go into my local branch to give them the info they are requesting. I've been trying to reach the general BOA #, but their phones appear to be down.

Fraud. Confirmed with BofA by calling number on my card. Also, letter was addressed to a non-existent company at my address, so was pretty obvious. Scammers are posting here to try and confuse you.

Never send personal info out when requested without confirming with the official bank phone number, official website (the one google recommends when you type in the name of the bank), or someone at a branch.

Got a letter in the mail from BA today and it was requesting my SS#, but they should already have this information from me opening my account. I believe this to a scam. It was too odd and requested information that they shouldn’t need. Also the address on it was in Phoenix, but any statements I receive from BA have always come from Wilmington Delaware.
