- BMH| 2 repliesThis was a valid Bank of America number for a dept that conducts compliance verification. My Mother was given the number in person by someone in her Bank of America branch location, so that I could call and provide the information they needed since I am on my mother's accounts, but live out of state from my mother. The person on the phone said that I could also go to my local B of A branch if I wished to provide the information in person rather than over the phone.
- SusanReceived letter on BOA letterhead and was suspicious. Called telephone number on my card and they confirmed the request for personal information was fraudulent.

- update replies to RswMost probably it is a scam -- Even I don't have any account at BoA, never ever, also received appearing-official letter to ask for DOB, etc. with a W-9 form supplied, the call-back number is what you guys reported..
- Question replies to BMHYou know this is a valid number for BoA so why did you look it up?
- anonReceived letter with this contact number. I called the number on back of credit card. The BOA rep seemed like it was legit. I asked why they needed a birthdate, employment etc and never got a straight answer. We have had this card over 30 years. I told him I thought it was a scam and I am not mailing anyone this info. He never asked asked me the questions on the letter. He told me about their "safe pass" verification. I have "verified by visa". But, nothing by mastercard. WHY is BOA sending out these letters?????? Are they attempting to see who is gullible????
- Caller: Letter from Bank of America
- Anon replies to BMHI am wondering if there are two things going on. BOA attempting to verify older person's accounts and see if they are susceptible to fishing. Also, possibly scammers are utilizing the same methods. Always call the number on you credit card or statements. Do Not call the number supplied in a letter.
- dhReceived a mailer that is made to look like Bank of America and has this phone # on it. It arrived the same day as a scam phone call. This is really extreme. Asks for source of income and full birth date. Threatens to close accounts and drill safe deposit boxes. Also requests filling out a W-9 and W-8BEN form which would give them SS#, Taxpayer ID, etc.
It does not reference any account and I have no bank account at B of A. Total scam.- Call type: Scam suspicion
- KristinGot one of these scam letters -- addressed to my father in law who has been deceased for 23 years & never lived at our address. Total bs/scam
- Caller: Fake b of a
- LindaI received a letter from Bank of America saying that "During a recent review we found we are missing or have incomplete information...Not providing the required information by date listed above may be considered a request from you to close your accounts." Enclosed was W-9 to provide my SSN. I've had a credit card from BOA for over 20 years so it seemed very suspect to me.
I called the number on the back of my credit card and talked to a person who then transferred me to their Compliance Department. The woman I spoke to said they have been mandated by the Federal Government to update their records. She said I should mail in the W-9 or go to a local branch to provide the info in person. She said she could NOT take the info over the phone, even though the letter says, "Please provide the required info using one of the following methods:
- By phone at 1-844-253-3707
- By mail
- By fax
- In person
The rep acknowledged they are getting a lot of "feedback" on this. The whole thing seems very sloppy, but apparently is legit.- Caller: Bank of America
- JNH| 2 repliesI did not get a phone call from this number but believe the number itself is likely legit -when I called Bank of America using the number of the back of my debit card, they gave me thjis number as a fraud number. However, I did get a LETTER THREATENING ACCOUNT CLOSURE THAT HAS THIS NUMBER AND THAT LETTER IS A SCAM. My elderly Dad got a letter asking for all sorts of personal information (W-9, etc) and threatening account closure, drilling of safety deposit boxes, etc. Came with a return envelope addressed to PO Box 29961 in Phoenix Arizona. It had my name associated with my Dad's address, but I do not have a Bank of America account at my Dad's address. Called Bank of America and they confirmed the letter is not from them, they would not ask for personal information to be sent by mail and definitely not to a PO Box in Phoenix. In combination, he has been getting repeated calls claiming to be from Bank of America.
- Caller: Bank of America
- MJG replies to JNHTake the letter & envelope to the post office since it was mailed. Postal inspectors can check it out!
- JNH replies to JNHUpdate - despite BoA on the phone telling me this was fraud, BoA at the branch office said that yes, this is a letter they are sending out, and they eventually tracked it down to a credit card from 1984 that they were just now trying to verify information on. Not sure why BoA is sending a letter that clearly looks like a phishing scam, for credit card accounts from 35 years ago, and not specifying what account they are asking about.
- KevinCan anyone confirm the address on the return envelope is or is not legit? Scammers could put a real BoA phone number on the letter, but count on at least some people mailing in the info.

- myrtlecould not use credit card--called number on my card which directed me to the fraud dept--they gave me the number 18442533707 to call but they connected me to this number--asked me 5 questions
1 was I a citizen of U S
2 did I have dual citizenship
3 my main source of income
cannot remember the other 2
-but this is a financial institution and have no rights to ask me about my citizenship--will never use my card again
called back tonight and found the this number is the compliance dept of B of A
they had put a temporary block on my card till I called this number---something very wrong about this--something like the questions on the new census- Caller: Bank of America Compliance Dept
- Jo replies to DickBoth my parents received a letter yesterday (July 5, 2018) as well. First thing that went through my mind was SCAM. And it turns out my parents don't have any accounts with Bank of America. And I thought it was REALLY weird to see a W2 form included in the letter.
- JDThe phone number may be real but the phishing letter is a scam. The owner of PO Box 29961, Phoenix AZ 85038-0961 was convicted in US District Court for bank fraud. DO NOT SEND INFO TO THIS PO BOX.
