    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    The name of the business is Consumer Billing Alternatives. They have other numbers that were tied to a Cobalt Financial Group that was a scam. They refused to validate the debt, would not provide business address, or business license or registration with the state. I checked the state registry for Cobalt Financial Group and fiund them but they were not refistered as a debt collector and they were trying to collect from me on a supposed payday loan from 2013. I called my bank on this and they found no attempt by anyone to retrieve 300 dollars for the payday loan for the time frame indicated by the company. All numbers previously associated with Cobalt Financial Group have now changed the message to this new company Consumer Billing alternatives. Other numbers that may contact you are 8448986757, 8005634062, 8005638240 and 8005649895. Mrs. Weaver was a name associated with Cobalt Financial Group. Other names may include a Mr. Pritchard, Michael Moore, Betsy Castro, Vanessa Ortiz, Julius, and Vincent Chase. Just be weary, now your rights and research your scams.

    Same deal.  Got a call that I need to respond to to stop further action against me.  I was to ask for Miss Weaver.  I sure am glad people place these bogus phone calls on the internet, as it makes it so much easier.  The message they left was vague and not in its entirety as the beginning of the message was missing.  I get at least two or three of these calls weekly from various scammers.  They told me I could also call a previous number mentioned by Mike @1-800-563-8240.  Thank you all.

    I got a call, answered the first one, it was a recorded message much like the old scam calls. I call back and they start reading my information to me and ask for me to verify it. When I said I wasn't going to, the woman hung up on me. I called a second time and the guy who answered started getting frustrated with me threatening legal action. He said I knew what the call was about and I said we'll I've gotten scam calls before so I'm sure it's the same. When I asked why I hadn't received anything in the mail he said "well you don't know what this is about".... so what? I would know if I had gotten any legal papers. He said what county the legal claim was in, one I don't live in anymore, and couldn't give me a court house it is going to be dealt in because it hasn't been filed yet... right.... Then he got upset and told me that "you're confusing us with customer service and you're sadly mistaken" however mediation is about finding the middle ground, yelling at someone over the phone would happen. I said well you're mistaken your company as a real company and not the scam it actually is. And he hung up as well. I'm so over these fake callers. The name on the recorded message of the company wasn't the same as if you called back either.

    I've been receiving these calls on a payday loan. They keep stating that I had a payday loan supposedly in 2013. I contacted my bank and they told me that nothing was deposited or withdrew from my bank from the name of the creditor that they gave me. I then checked my credit score. If I did take out a payday loan wouldn't it show up on my credit score. Nothing on my credit score for a payday loan. The first call was asking for me to verify information. I didn't do it. They hanged up. Sometime this year, I received a call from a litigator stating I need to pay $590 or I was going to be arrested for bank & check fraud.  I've already filed complaints with the Attorney General in Massachusetts, Federal Trade Commission and the something Consumer. The numbers 844-600-4818 to speak with Mrs. Weaver case #266316 to call this number 800-563-8240. The message gave me this name called the "Asset Recovery Division" and when I called the 800 number received this company name of Consumer Billing Alternative.  I'm getting tired of these calls and I've been blocking them like crazy. Anything else I should do.

    Sorry, I was incorrect with the year. It isn't 2013 it was 2011. This was on February 2017: "I've received a call from phone number 214-396-7236, which stated that the call came from Dallas, TX. I returned the call and was transferred to Kelly Hendrisks from Federal Law Office Financial Regulation/Department of Fraud Investigation at 440-730-4244. I found out that she is located in Ohio. She stated that I did a Pay Day Loan in 2011 from Greenwood and that I should have received paper work, which I never had from any one. She stated that if I don't pay $560.03 by 1 p.m. today that they were going to file charges of bank/check fraud. I never opened a pay day loan in 2011. I then received an email from a Michelle Collins to pay the $560.03 but instead showed the amount of $595. The email had a company named National Litigation Group. I called my husband, who in turned called Kelly Hendrisks back. He stated that she was very rude etc to him and hanged up on him. I checked with my bank and they found nothing on Greenwood or any amount being deposited from a pay day loan company in 2011. I then checked my credit report. There isn't any pay day loan showing up on my account. Today, I did call the Attorney General of Mass and told them my story. They taken all my information and told me that it is a scam. I then contacted the Federal Trade Commission. I gave them my story and they created a claim on the three company names mentioned in this blog. They too told me it is a scam. While I was still on the phone with the Federal Trade Commission, Kelly Hendrisks left me a voice message stating that I need to take care of this and that my husband was rude and threaten to her. I didn't call back. I then contacted the Consumer Finance and gave them my story. They too started a claim. They also stated that it is a scam. The Consumer Finance stated that no government will contact a consumer via phone, email, etc. for payment. They will always contact by certified mail with return receipt on it."
