Call from Doris Clark @ (855)249-4342 x2085289 of Social Security asking for extensive personal ID info. Wasn't sure if she was legitimate because her name and contact info above is on the open Internet. It turns out she is a SSA contract employee working out of her home and is legitimate. If her, or anyone calls asking for personal iD information, you can authenticate them in this manner: Tell them you call back, then call the SSA national help line at (800)772-1213 and wade through the automated menus until you get to speak to a live agent. They'll ask you several personal ID questions to authenticate who you are. Then ask them about the person called you. They'll open up your personal file and locate the field notes of the agent who last called you. If your caller is authentic, those notes will show the name of that person who last called you, and the disposition of the call -- which was that you would attempt to verify their ID and call back. This is a pretty secure method of authentication because the only way Doris could have entered her notes into my database file at the SSA, was if she actually is a contract employee and had secure remote access into the SSA.

I received a call and vm from this number following my husband's online application for medicare.  And an email.  It all looked and sounded really shady, but I asked her to call me back and the phone i.d. is the same as the ssa.gov helpline.  Hope it's legit--suggested they make the email look a lot less sketchy.  If you don't trust the called id, what Roger said above should work if you don't mind wading through the phone system to confirm the identify of the caller/emailer.

The number is legit. I called Social Security to verify.

855-249-4342 is a valid Social Security Number. I checked with SS main office and they confirmed the number so I called it and they asked me some questions about my Medicare application.  Of course telemarketers can show any phone number when they call you but the number itself is valid.

This is a real number for  social security.  I called the main number for social security and they confirmed this is number of worker for my claim.

So I called back the number and all they want to do is sell me stuff... I will call SSA in the morning to see what the deal is....

Got a call from this #, said she was Karen Dalton (I see her mentioned in 2014) and she needed more info to process a claim. I said I thought it was a scam and she gave me the real SS# to call to verify (1-800-772-1213) and that her call back ext was 2085290 (same as mentioned in 2014, here). I called SS and a live agent said she couldn't assist me with finding out if this was a real employee of SS, and that my claim was being processed and she didn't see any issues with it! So...still mystified...

I received a call from phone#855-249-4342 about my application for ss that I did online. I called my local ss office in port orange fla I gave them the phone# and the agent verified that it is a valid phone# for them.

Definitely NOT legitimate.   I got an email.  Called the number. Heard a voicemail and boy they do a great job making it sound very official.    I confirmed with SS that they had not contacted me by email.  Anyone who says this is not a scam must work for the scammers.  Beware.
