My little sister was using her new computer and a message popped up prompting her to call because something was wrong with her computer. Being young she called this number.

Did she follow the directions given by the scammer on the phone?

If she did, the scammers accessed the computer, and they probably did one or more of the following:
    • Disabled the anti-virus software
    • Added nasty malware to the computer
    • Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
    • Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
    • Compromised your ID
    • "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
    • Deleted some important files
    • Asked for money to repair the damage they caused

What can you do immediately after such an attack?
    1.  Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
    2.  Change ALL  passwords stored on the computer
    3.  Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
    4.  Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything
    5.  Inform your bank and credit card companies
    6.  Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
    7.  You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
    8.  Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you
    9.  Plug in the cables only AFTER all the above have been done
    10.  Change the passwords on all online accounts.  Even better - access a "safe", uninfected  computer, and chance your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.

    NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer.  Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!

Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!

    Some scammers even have websites.

Hijacked my PC by locking chrome, didnt give them a chance to even state their demands when I called the number to confirm its the scam.  Called them a few names, and they went NUTS.  Hung up on them, and they actually called my iphone back.  Said they were the FBI, and that cops were on the way.  Had some more fun with them, guy eventually said he PERSONALLY was going to come over and do me and my family (implied) harm.  At that point I killed the call and blocked.

Classy bunch, these guys.  I have the dialect pegged at India.

Yoda Care is a real company with an F- rating from the BBB!  The got me in a weak moment yesterday.  But I immediately call3d my credit card company, cleaned up my hard drive, deleted the email account, changed a mess of passwords and contacted the Malwarebytes company to find out how to get rid of a last little piece of software that is somehow embedded in my IE program somewhere.  I think it's   their way into my computer but I also clicked to not allow remote access. I can only hope I've   done enough  The phone calls started today.  Also an Indian woman whom I cannot undetstand. Four calls so far.  I hang up.

If you're on a MacBook, Apple can help you through chat if your computer is still under warranty.  This happened to my roommate yesterday and it was a fairly quick fix.  We just had to remove the software from her laptop and make sure her firewall was running

Called the number- got ahold of my computer- he said my computer had illegal ip addresses was going to chare 189.99.  When I said I decline he started deleting all info from my computer until I shut it down.  Name given was Aman Kurmar with yoda care.    Awful human and was calling me names as he was deleting information.  I called the number since it was a pop up on my computer.

Received several calls from the number after I called 844-708-2743 following a security warning on my computer. Don't be as foolish as I was. I gave them access to "fix" the problem on my computer. I've reported it as fraud to the local police. Whatever you do DON'T accept calls from this number!!!

They have a new number 855-442-2930.  Just hung up when they wanted my credit card info to charge me $179; $249; or $279 to clean my computer! Is the world going to scammers?  I knew something was up when I had to repeatedly ask Steven "Searchfield" to repeat himself in order for me to understand what he was saying.  Good riddance!!

I received pop up on safari which said my computer was infected and to call 1-888-842-9735.  My computer didn't work so I did.  They led me to believe they were the Apple repair service.  I fell for it.  When they asked for credit card I hung up.  They called me back on number 855-442-2935.  I fell for it and gave them credit card number.  Googled them (Yodacare) after and saw they are scammers.  When on phone with them they had me google them and website looked legit.  After I hung up I saw all about scam.  I called and cancelled credit card and called Apple to report callers were pretending to be them.  Apple kindly removed the malware they had installed, corrected settings, emptied trash and history and assisted with password changes.  They said they provide this service free as it is a security issue.  30-40% of their daily calls are this.  I saved my money by canceling my card.  I can only hope they didn't access financial or other info and that my computer is now safe.  They charged 135 for immediate fix; had 3 options for security which they downloaded free from internet, and 3 options for "24-7" personal computer technician on call.

You will have to go to your bank or credit union and have them cancel your credit card number, as the scammers might give that number to other criminals.

Take your computer to a brick and mortar computer service company you trust and have them go through it.   Never give control of your computer over to anyone you do not know.  Read the other posts.

Got a pop up. I don't fall for these but this time I did ugh. They got my info went through my computer said 3 people were using it and they could get all my info. By the time they finished I had a feeling something wasn't right. Then come to find out it was a scam. I called my bank they said my card wasn't charged yet and they cancelled it right away. Then I called my laptop company they fixed my computer for free got rid of everything they put on there and cleaned my system. Im just glad that I caught it in time and didn't lose my money! I will really be more aware every single time now!

Depends on how you paid them.  If you gave them a CC or debit card number,  you might be able to go back to the bank and have the transactions reversed.  If you paid by green dot money card or similar, your money is lost.

Rule:  (1) Never give control of your computer to anyone you do not personally know. (2) Never send money to anyone you do not personally know.
