The calls are at 8 in the morning on my cell phone, no message left just phone calls that interrupt the work day

Gosh, if only someone would come along and post a solution to all these irritating calls!

I appreciate your detailed method. I do owe from an unpaid credit card and it is past the original 30 days. Do you have any advice in that case?

I find it hard to believe that a credit card company has turned you over to a debt collector that quick.  FDCPA regulations do not apply to creditors.  State laws may or may not.  I would suggest that you attempt to make the payment to the credit card company, or try to work something out.  Make sure you get it in writing.  If you have been turned over to a debt collector then my previous advice applies.  Even if you know the debt is yours, you don't know if you will be paying the correct collector unless they validate the debt with the original creditor as required by law.

It seems I missed a court case back in 2015 - I dont recall even being notified about it, in any case I received a letter from the court officer that there is a judgement against me that still needs to be paid. It is no longer on my credit report but really dont know what to do. They also call non stop and I am not sure sending a validation letter any of the letters suggested above would be effective. any advise would be helpful. Thanks!

But what happens if you really do owe the $$? Credit card company must have sold them my debt when I lost my job. If/when I get back on my feet-do I pay the credit card company or Portfolio?

If the card company sold them the debt, then several things should have happened.  First, they should have provided Portfolio with all the paperwork you signed to get the card as well as all of the information on the transactions that you charged and payments made.  They also should have contractually assigned the debt to Portfolio, which means they are no longer involved.  It is up to you if you want to pay them or not.  Most likely it will not improve your credit rating very much if that is your sole reason.  Now, as I have said over and over, never pay a debt collector unless they have followed the letter of the law, which means that they must prove both that you owe the debt, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  Most likely they cannot prove the latter.  In which case, you would be flushing money down the toilet if you paid them.  Besides, I am sure they have violated federal and state collection laws many times over by now, which means that they should be paying you.

Why have you not gone after them is the question? Or are they not bothering you?

They call constantly about 2 debts I created in 2010. I lost my 2nd job and fell on hard times. They are saying the debts happened in 2013.
When does this ever stop? I now am on disability permanently.

Portfolio is a collection company witch bought bad debt. The original that you had a deal with has been paid or allowed to write it off witch means they have been paid...
an attorney friend told these collections companies buy up bad debt trying to get paid.... they bought your unpaid balance for pennies on the dollar

Harrassed by this number. I dont owe them but my husband does. Its illegal to harass family members for their debt.
