Just got another (blocked) call from this number. I'm not sure who I should be angrier with, the caller, if he/she is a scammer posing as a MI state worker or the State of MI for allowing this to continue and doing nothing to lock up these clowns. ???

The Company calling you is named G.C. Services Limited Partnership. They are one of the largest collection agencies in the US operating out of Texas. They only assume the name MARCS (Michigan Accounts Recievable Collection System). They are under private contract with Michigan to collect debts via commission. Thier contract with the state requires them to comply with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). They will tell you almost anything to collect thier commission. What you should ask for that they will not supply is the ASSESSMENT which supports thier actions. Un the FDCPA you should dispute the debt in writing and ask them for a "validation" of the debt. Accept only the assessment, just sending a billing notice is not validation, nor is it an assessment.

Caller ID showed this number, but ID was not provided. I took the call and noticed that it was prerecorded, pretending they work for the State of Michigan to collect debts. Said "call back with this reference number" But then there was none. Called back, and they wanted my SSN. Did not give it to them and told them my opinion about that. Very obviously a scam.

I just received a phone call from this number saying that I owe an outstanding debt with the state of Michigan for over $1000 that I was unaware of.  I felt uncomfortable about the questions I was being asked along with the threats that were being made. Very strange. How did they get my number?

Are you out of your mind? Too dumb to figure it out? The State of Michigan does not call you if you owe back taxes. They write you a letter and make several attempts to contact you via US Postal Service. They might try to call you but a live person calls and they speak to you intelligently and you know they are legit because they will send you a detailed bill of what is owed when you request such a bill. This is a scam and I hope people refuse to pay these dopes. Pathetic! You are just a shill for these scum of the earth! Go find a real job!

Governmental agencies rely on written communications through US mail.  No levy is going to take place without clear warnings and a lot of serious legal background.  They do not do this through cold-call.

This is a scam, pure and simple.

No one should pay anything to anyone one, or any entitym, on the basis of a cold call. Period.

States they are calling from "accounts receivable" from state of Michigan.  Called my wife's cell number, but asked for me, they provided 8 year old street address (we used to live at) to try and demonstrate that they are legitimate.  Wouldn't tell me what they were calling about until I gave them my name, address or social security number.  I did none of the above.  I told them to only contact me by ground mail from now on, I wouldn't accept any more calls from them.

I do appreciate the information you shared but frankly it is not about being lazy!  Yes, it can be looked up but in this day with SO MANY scams being conducted especially by phone, people are highly skeptical when a collection call is received and there is no knowledge of any debt owed AND no other attempt at communication such as letter; which is typically how government agencies communicate especially before a debt is forwarded to a collection agency.  Of course people will be suspect of a call out of the blue so their first step is to question the phone number and the credibility of the caller.  For those who pay their taxes, on time every year, YES, a call like this would be very suspicious.

That post was made in 2014, 2 years ago.  However, if you owe state taxes, the State of Michigan can and will take whatever action they need to to collect that debt.  Here is their official page on what actions they will take.

    Still owes
I actually wrote one of the comments and said it was a scam... I received a letter from the State of Michigan today and called to clarify what it was about. I also inquired about the call I had received on Saturday from this number. They did confirm that someone did call me from the State of Michigans collections and that they are open on Saturdays. I don't recommend picking it up because he didn't sound very friendly...I would just call back and talk to someone who isn't as aggressive. The number to call is 866.754.8651. The girl I talked to was amazing and kind
