I called a verified Dell Financial number from their website.  I told them I wanted to verify the number 1-866-228-9620 as I had received a recont call from that number.  After a few minutes, the operator confirmed that the number belongs to Dell Financial Verification Services.

If you are worried about the possible theft of your identity, contact each of the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Trans Union, Equafax) and fill out a "Fraud Alert" form.  This will alert the agencies of the possible theft of your identity.  This alert is posted for 90 days.  If you do a Fraud Alert, it may be difficult to obtain new credit or new loans during the 90 days...well worth it, though.

Someone from 1-866-228-9620 called me today, 1-3-08, asking me if I had ordered something from them today. I told them no. He asked for my social security number and I did not give it to him. Sounds like a bad scam. He would not tell me what it was I was supposed to have ordered.

My caller ID showed a call from 800-289-3355 which does belong to Dell. The message left was for verification of an attempted line of credit and purchase in my name. I got this message at 3am however (the call came in at 9pm), so I could only check it on the Dell web site, and the order number given in the message reflects a real order for TWO $360 Sony Cybershot cameras. !! I am poor and would never spend that much for anything!! So I called Dell, at their number, not the call back number of 866-228-9620 as left in the message. The guy at Dell was more than helpful, and rattled off the full ship to address and phone number, although I don't remember it 100%. But I got the guy's name and part of his address (in Bronx, NY, when I live in WV) who tried to get over $700 of stuff in my name. I hope they nail his balls to the wall for it too!

Call fm a person giving his name as Paul and claiming to be from Dell Financial Services, that there's an online order on my name for a TV and Playstation.  Left phone # 1-866-228-9620 and a order number reference for me to call back with. Called the number and a lady answered as Dell Financial Services and started asking for SS# and mother's maiden name inspite of my indicating this is not a valid order.  She got my address and phone number and started asking for more information.  When I wouldn't provide the information she said that an affidavit would be mailed to me and I can file a police report.  Entire set up looks shady and professional.

I just got home and found the same voice mail message - call 1-866-228-9620 and some garbled foreign sounding request to call and reference #2985284235.  Does sound like a scam - I'm calling the attorney general in my state and the FBI.  The last time I reported something like this to the FBI, they said they keep that stuff to watch for scams.  The called ID showed all "0's" and "unavailable"

this is a valid number for the fraud department.  call any dell number on the website and ask to be transferred to 7260103.  it will get you to the same number and they will provide that as a callback.

i got a phone call from Dell - ph: 866-228-9620 - i'm wondering what's going on, the person told me that somebody tried to purchase stuff in the thousands online, and also a credit card from Dell, just by using my SS and address.
I followed their advice in calling the Experience # 888-397-3742, but am not sure about the credibility of these call.

Same crap as above.  They wouldn't give any info over the phone until we gave up a SS number.  They did do a credit check on us according to our credit report I ran yesterday.  I don't know what's been ordered in our name.  Dell said no fraud until an item shows up as a charge.  I checked our charge cards yesterday and nothing on them YET.  I'm gonna call the cops and attorney generals office.

I received a message this morning to call this number and with an order number.  I couldn't understand the phone number and had to *69 it.  The gentleman that answered said it was Dell and he had cancelled the application.  He did not ask me any questions, only my phone number.  I am still suspicious.

I received a call today to contact 866-228-9620 to verify a line of credit (revolving) with Dell Financial. they wanted to verify what my SS# was.. I refused to give it out.. they indicated an application # was made for a $4,000.00 line of credit.  This is fraud, I said. I requested the contact info of the person who was trying to get credit under my name. Dell financial first said I would need a subpeopna.. I then pursued information on getting a subpeopna.. According to the FTC, I don't need a subpeona to get information on someone who is/was attempting to assume my ID.  For the next 5 hours I continuous called back trying to get the information from Dell... I was transfered to Anny, Anise, Rose, Amanda, Anise again, John, Rakesh, Aradia, Jake and Alex (who claimed to be a supervisor for Dell Financial).  All the while being placed on hold, disconnected, and sent into automated systems that require me to give out my SS#... I can't understand how a person who is trying to steal my ID would have more rights than I.. Dell refused to give me the contact information of the theif... I will file a police report and go from there.

my elderly dad has gotten a call from this number 866-228-9620 for threee days in a row.  fortunately my sister answered all 3 times, refused to give info and the people hang up.
I have contacted Dell Financial and the woman i talked to did NOT have that number on her list and did not have my dad's phone number connected with any account.
Obviously someone trying to get SS# and other info.  have reported to Florida Attorney General and filed a complaint with the do not call list.

this number 866-228-9620 is Dell Computers Finance Dept. It is SAFE and They Will Use Your Telephone as a verification instead of your social security.

If this is a Dell number 866 228 9620, Dell is destroying it's good name and repretation in the market place by using illegal and deceptive methods to open lines of credit without one's knowledge or permission.  Dell should contact the FTC about this number and have it investagated since they are causing harm to Dell's image and good will.  I will NEVER buy a Dell computer based on this call and false credit card that someone opened in my name.  I will also tell other about this poor experance with Dell to persuade them to purchase products from more responsible companies.  I am reporting this number to the attorney general, the local TV's station consumer reports so hopefully a few million people will see the business ethics Dell uses in getting customers to open credit cards without their knowledge or permission, or perhaps Dell will go after this number and people behind it.

I just spent several hrs online with reverse look up and with Dell financial services to see if they were aware of these calls and was told they only use a 800 number to make calls and would not handle it this way so whoever is posting that it is a legit # works for this phishing scam. I'm sure they google their # to read comments and post themselves. I called the FTC and reported.Their number didn't show up on reverse look up.

Received a message from 1-866-228-9620 claiming to be Dell Financial services/Verification Dept Claiming they had an order from me. I ignored it figuring it was some kind of scam but then 2 days letter received another call from 1-800-456-3355. Called back and got through to a woman who informed me that I had ordered a digital camera. She then asked me for my Soc security #.  I of course laughed at her and told her that Dell or any legitimate business would never ask for SS# over the phone and hung up.

I just got a call from this number, took notes (it was clearly a phishing attempt) and will be reporting this information to the local FBI shortly. Where there is phishing, there is the intent to defraud people by ID theft. Where there's ID theft, there's monetary theft via access to financial accounts. Where there's theft from such account takeovers, there's money laundering inherent in the practice of removing funds from those accounts and using them. Several federal crimes being committed and I intend to make sure all of them are accounted for.
