I just called the financial services phone number I found on the Dell website and asked them to verify the number...the man I spoke with ("Peter") said that this number is indeed a Dell number for the fraud department.  He suggested that I call it because the Fraud dept will call if they believe there is something wrong with an order that was placed.  I was the victim of identity theft earlier in the summer so I do have reason to believe that the perpetrator(s) might attempt to open accounts again.

A call from this company was harassing me.  I don't have any record of an order from Dell [or is it Bell?].  I have not returned call.  And after seeing msgs on this site, I will make sure I don't.  It was also irritating that they called both the cell and home number.

have been getting calls for verification of recent order, of which we haven't made, from a dell financial. I called my phone co. they  googled the numbers given. and verified it to be dell financial, while we talked. To me the code they wanted you to give. looked like a phone no. if you put the two -'s in. she verified that it was a number to India. said do not give no.'s or social security no.'s  that it says they ask for.  When I contacted Dell financial. the person I talked to had that accent. Asked for the code. I told her not going to give it because it is a phon no. said she would take our number off their list and that they must have dialed a wrong number. My phone company said to inform the attorney general also.

Definitely legit....they called from this number because someone tried to open an account in my name.  Good thing that I had a fraud alert on my account (which was the reason that they called).

Same crap.  Just got off the phone with a woman who who cliamed to be from DELL's financial services department.  She was trying to verify if I had applied for credit with them.  I told her that I not only did not apply for credit, but I NEVER give out this cell phone number to people who I don't know.  I insisted that she tell me where she got it.  She told me that she was trying to prevent identity theft and that she needed to know if I had applied for credit.  The whole thing STUNK form the get go so I kept her on the phone.  I asked her what other information she had of mine.  She didn't respond.  I said that in order to prevent ID theft, I should be made aware of what other information she had.  I asked if she knew my first name, she said she did because I used it to identify myself when I answered the phone. I asked if she had my last name - she did.  She claims to not of had any other info.  I asked her for her name and she said Tess.  I asked for her last name.  Silence.  I said that I knew that DELL used employee numbers (I was bluffing).  She said hers was 390053.  She recited it very quickly and I had to ask her to repeat it twice.   I asked what kind of credit was being sought, she didn't know, her job was onl;y to check off "yes" if I say that I had applied, or "no" if I didn't.  I asked if I could speak to her supervisor, she said yes and put me on hold for about 3 minutes after which time she got back on the phone and said that the Supervisor would have to call me back because she "couldn't transfer an outgoing call".  I asked where she was calling from, she said Texas - Fort Worth.  I asked her if the job market in Fort Worth was so bad that she had to work calling people on a Sunday night to try deceive them into giving out personal information.  She said she understands my concern and a supervisor would be calling me back  -- Can't wait to get a hold of this jack***.

I just got this call as well. I'm not a shill or part of the scam and am only posting here to offer some advice for people who go through this. This should not be ignored.

It means someone is trying to use your personal information for their own gain and this needs to be stopped.

First of all 1-866-228-9620 is a valid phone number to Dell Verification, you can find it on their web site here: http://www.dell.com/us/p/d/order-support/cancel-your-order

I called another number from their website just to be sure and was transferred. So you can do that just to be sure.

The lady I talked to asked for me name but that was it. I told her that I was concerned about this and got away with just giving her my first name. No SS number, no phone number, just first name. She told me exactly what was applied for and when but would not give me the address of the person who applied for the credit. I told her she was legally obligated to do so but she still refused. She did give me an address where I could send the written request.

I understand that DFS has a bad rep but they are not the bad guys here. This verification process just saved me from someone getting 4800 is credit in my name.

I am sending the written request and will post here again with the results. I intend to do everything in my power to hold this person accountable. I highly suggest for everyone who goes through this to do the same. It may not solve the overall problem but it will at least stop this person from doing it again.

FraudBuster, as I said before, if you don't want to call the number, call another number from the website and ask to be transferred to the verification department. I don't see how it can be a fake phone number as it is listed on their site (I provided a link in my last post). Perhaps you can ask them that question the next time you try to call me a shill.

Don't call it if you don't want to, I am just trying to let people know that they should take this seriously. It means someone is trying to use your information for their own gain and it needs to be stopped. Chose for yourself if you want to ignore it but I am just trying to help. And please, don't call it garbage. I'm not a shill, just someone who is in for months of crap trying to get things back on track.

Just an update for the rest of you. Since I made that post, I have started going through the recommended process. I filed a police report (dell said they need a copy in order to release the address that was given on the application), I put a fraud alert on my credit (you can do this for free for 90 days) and have advised my credit cards and bank. Over the weekend I received two calls that my credit was being accessed in order to open credit accounts.

To be honest, I am not even sure what all of this is going to accomplish. I have to wait 10 days for the police report and then however long it is going to take dell to get me the information. Once I get the information, I will file it with the FTC and then I'm not sure what they will do with it. But, at least it's something. And once again, I will post here with whatever happens.

I received a number of fake "fraud alert" calls from this number myself.  Dell told me that the calls are fraudulent and are part of a known scam.

Looks like this shill is desperate to convince everyone that this is Dell calling - which is totally false.  The fake number being spoofed is an inbound number from their site, which is ONLY used for making calls to Dell, NEVER for calls to consumers.

Calls from this number are totally fake - don't be fooled by any of the garbage posted here by shills.

Look man, I don't know how many times I have to say not to call this number if you don't want to. Call DFS on a different number, ask for the verification department and proceed from there. Can that hurt? Consider the price to your credit and to your life. I think it's worth a phone call to DFS.

I did not think of the possibly that this was a "spoofed" number, did not even know that was possible. Even if it is, I am not sure how it would work when you picked up a different phone and called it back. Then what? Someone intercepts you call? Don't get me wrong, I do think it's notable that so many people are having this happen to them. It does not add up.

I will say this one more time. The number is on their website at the link I provided, under "Why my order was placed on Hold and got cancelled?". That's not me, my friend, that's Dell. It's a secure site, I'm sure you can check that somehow. The bottom line is that it is real number. I would never suggest that anyone pick up the phone when this number calls and give the person all your information. I would hope that everyone would know to never do that. All I am saying is to call DFS and check it out. If they don't have an application for you on record, then it only cost you a few minutes.

I am not sure why you would tell anyone to do any different. I am trying my best not to be rude here but maybe you can explain what it would hurt to call and check. Especially if you do not give out any information other than your name.

This is real Dell financial, you idiots.

It's not a scam, it's the verification department for orders placed on a Dell preferred account.

They are calling to harass you and protect their own a**.  It's not for "your protection", but theirs, and you should not put up with it.
