I too have done the same thing, right down to the fraud alert. let me know the outcome. they say i purchase a computer for 1303.23 and even have given me an order number with shipping city. I guess my question would be how can they ship something without verification first? and then when I call custoemr service at Dell they turned everything into the fraud department I am hoping they will do something.

Do not click on that link above. It is not a true Dell web site. I have RoboForm that remembers my ID and password for websites. When I click on the above link, RoboForm did not have my ID or password. I then knew it was a phished site. I went into the real site and called them. They told me that if it was Dell, then Dell would appear on the caller ID not toll free. Regardless do not give your SSN or any info what so ever until you know who you are talking with. It's best to do some research to find an accurate phone number and then call back. Best of luck everyone.

Wow, that took a looooooong time. However. I finally got my police report, sent it in to Dell and got the guys address from the application.

I updated the police report but who know what (if anything) will happen. This is a lot of work to go through for nothing.

Anyway, I said I would give an update so I did. Do with it what you will.

I received a call (VM) from DFS which stated they wanted to make me aware of an account that was opened in my name. I then called back the 1-800-WWW-DELL phone number I found on the DELL site and in fact there was a Fraud account opened. I just wanted to advise you all that the correct number for DFS Fraud Department 1-866-213-3355. I have contacted all 3 credit reporting companies and have placed a "Fraud Alert" on my accounts as the Dell item was already showing and I reported it as fraud. I also went to my local PD and filed a report for my own protection. Dell has marked the purchase as a Fraud as the computer was delivered to an address I have not lived at for over 5 years. So although this # is no longer in service I was alerted to a Fraud which I was able to stop. So I’m can’t say for sure if the number you are all referring to was the number that called me but I was able to stop any further fraud on my account. I did callit today and it is no longer working, you get dropped. BUT I would not ignore any call completely, call DELL directly or any other insititution that calls and make sure before you write it all off. You never know and if nothing else you letting the company know!

This is a real number for Dell Financial Services, the Fraud Verification Dept to be specific, not Dell. The sales man for Dell will not typically know what that number is, they sell computers, they don't work for the Fraud Dept. I would highly suggest answering the phone and confirming you didn't make the order. Yes, they have an accent and  work in another country. It's call outsourcing. America brought it on themselves wanting the cheapest prices possible so stop complaining.  If something fraud has shipped, then go check your credit and see if you have been a victim of fraud of other companies as well.  The sooner you deal with it the sooner your credit will get cleaned up.  It's up to you.

I received two voicemails from this number today, both saying it was from Dell Financial Services to verify my request for a line of credit.  I did not call this number, but went online to the Dell site and called the customer service number there.  They confirmed this is the Dell verification department number and transferred me.  The guy asked for my SSN.  I refused to give it to him, so he verified my address and phone number, which he already had.  He stated the "application" is being sent to the fraud department and that someone will call me back to give me additional information on the application.  He gave me a claim number.  I will be making a report to the credit agencies as well.  I AM NOT a "shill" responder/poster.

For those complaining that the representative would not give you information about the person who fraudulently applied for credit/purchased something in your name, they are not permitted to give you the information over the phone, as a matter of law:

Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA), identify theft victims and law enforcement have the right to request application information and business transaction records about consumer transactions alleged to the result of identity theft. To make a FACTA request for information, you must provide the following to DFS:

    Requests from Victims (consumers):

Victims requesting information about a consumer transaction alleged to be the result of identity theft must do so in writing. In addition to providing a written request for information to DFS, victims must also provide:

    (1) A copy of a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license;
    (2) A copy of a police report; and
    (3) If an account was opened, a completed affidavit (victims may use the FTC's form affidavit, available at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/resources/forms/affidavit.pdf)

Again, I am NOT a "shill" poster.

Got a VM last week whose caller ID showed up as (800) 456-3355. Man with Indian (or similar) accent claiming to be from Dell Financial Services said an account was opened in my name, listed a 9-digit "Customer Number", and told me to call back the # being discussed here, 866-228-9620. I have no account with Dell, have never owned one, have no prior business with them. Research on multiple websites has led me to believe this is a phishing scam, with the callers posing as Credit Representatives who want to scare you into thinking you are a victim of Identity Theft, when in reality, THEY are the ones trying to steal your identity!

Needless to say, I didn't call the # back. (The 1st one (the 800 #) listed is Dell's main #, the 2nd one seems to be a fraud, although it CAN be found on a fake mock-up page that somebody has created, imitating Dell, that is NOT on Dell's actual servers. For one thing, it is full of grammatical errors, LOL-- something a Fortune 500 company would likely not let slip.)

Anyway, today I got a call from a DIFFERENT unknown # on the Caller ID, 215-441-3000. It was a different man, also with a similiar accent, STILL claiming to be from Dell Financial Services' Verifications Dept. and listing another, DIFFERENT 9-digit "Reference number".  Again, he told me to call back to 866-228-9620!

It's now clearly obvious to me that it's all a scam. First of all, the (215) phone # on the caller ID is for a Collection agency in Pennsylvania-- no connection to Dell. Although both #s on the Caller IDs seem to be legit, it's now clear they are being spoofed to try to gain your trust.

There are plenty of posts all over the net about these scammers. Do NOT call this # back; do NOT give your SSN out! No real company will ask for this anyway!

Dell's Fraud Dept is 866-383-4713. I only had to wait 7 minutes to get through. Be sure to get the Order Number from them at the time. Then they will give you to Credit Card Services to proceed.

Report a phone call from 866-228-9620:

The company that called you.
