I received a call from a different number 866-512-7171, leaving me a message, stating they were Bank of America, and to call back this number, 866-231-4406, and when I called back, they wanted my personal bank information to confirm my identity. I refused, and called Bank of America, and they told me they were not aware of this number, and they they would never call a person in this fashion.

I had the same thing happen to me. The call was from 866-512-7171 on caller ID, name not provided, and the number they asked me to call back was 866-231-4406. The message said it was "a non marketing emergency call" from Bank of America. When I called they wanted my account number, which of course I did not give. I immediately called B of A and they passed the information on to their fraud department. Clearly this is NOT Bank of America calling, it is a scheme to get account numbers. Do not give them any information.

Same thing happened here. I closed my account with BOA 6 months ago. I have informed BOA, hopefully no one will fall for it and give out personal information.

I just got this same message(supposedly from Bank of America  from the same number as everyone mentioned here (866-512-7171).  It asked to call back 866-231-4406 and left a message code to enter at the prompt. I called it back but hung up before connecting with a person.  I figured this was not legitimate because Bank of America has never contacted me this way.  I've been a customer in many ways for a long time.

I just got the same message from 866-512-7171 that everyone has mentioned.  I also got a letter in the mail last week saying something to do with online gaming.  Anyone else here involved in online gaming in the past?  Maybe there is a correlation?

Yes my ex boyfriend had used my BOA account a few years ago to play online poker. I just checked my messages and had the same message telling me to call 866 231 4406 and put in a code. Called BOA and they never heard of this number and advised me not to give them any information if they call back.

It is possible that this message is a collections message. Being a former BOA employee (credit card collections), I know the systems they use.

In collections, there are automated systems that do call and leave such messages, and when you call the number on the back of your card or on your statement you reach Customer Service who does not have the collections numbers. The reason you are getting calls from different caller ID numbers, is because there is a different number for each system used.

I cannot say if this is or is not a BOA number, because I have not worked there for over 6 months and their numbers are changing constantly.

To verify if the numbers are really BOA:
1) Call back the caller ID number (or *69 is one is not left). You should be connected to BOA, "FIA Card Services", or "Bank Card Services".

2) Call the number for your checking, savings, loans, and ALL your credit cards (BOA handles card services for many companies). Ask about the status of each account by calling each department. In many cases one department cannot give you the status of all your accounts, because each department uses their own system and info is not shared in real-time between them. If you have an account that is overdrawn or past due, get the number for the proper collections/customer assistance department and call them ASAP to fix your account.

3) Call the number the message leaves you. If an automated system asks for your account information, press 0 or * until you get through to a person. That person should be able to look up and tell you all about your account with only your phone number, zip code, and the last 4 of your SSN. Ask them to verify a specific transaction on the account they are looking at (date and amount of last payment or last deposit is generally sufficient). If they can verify that information with just those 3 items, it is BOA.

It is quite possible there is something wrong with your account, I am getting these calls after a housemate moved out and his checking account had been overdrawn for some time.

They said this is an urgent message for <my first middle initial and last name>.  Called back a week later with that number and code and code could not be found by IVR.  Hung up.

I also got this call with an automated urgent message from "Bank of America." They gave an account holder name I didn't recognize and told me to call them at 866-231-4406 with a message code. I'm not a Bank of America customer, so I didn't call back.

I keep getting these calls from 866-512-7171 asking me to call back to a different number 866-231-4406 with some special code.  Does not say any kind of a company or anything.

ok everyone, I called the 7171 number using *69.  I did not divulge any info as she asked for it and they also did not give up any info. The rep told me that if I did not believe she was BOA to call 800-432-1000 (true BOA number) so I did.  This phone number is in fact a true BOA number 866-231-4406 and 866-512-7171.  The department is actually called the overdraft retention department. So there you go.  The one thing I did ask the rep to do at the 7171 number was to notate my acct.  When i calle dthe true 800 number, they DID see the notes.

Called and left a message and a reference number stating they were bank of america.  Wanted us to call 866-231-4406.  When we tried to call back - the number was out of service or could not be reached from our area code.

I smelled scam from the first time I heard the message -  hopefully they have been shut down.

I received a message on my voicemail to call 866-231-4406. The call came from the same number in the other comments above, 866-512-7171. I called BOA customer service, and I got the same response as "I got the answer!!!" The call came from the Overdraft Retention Department from Bank of America. It was a courtesy call to let me know my account was overdrafted.

Regarding this 866-512-7171 scam from the person saying that they are Bank of America. This is a scam. They are trying to get all of your account information and personal details for ID theft. Hey, I just got the same call this weekend, and called it from another line today.  I was ready to get my Verbal Abuse on, but I got a message about 'High Call Volumes' and got disconnected.

I called my bank and gave them the Info, so they have a history of this spammer, in hopes they shut it down, especially since it seems the problem has been going on for quite some time.

DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER. I just got off the phone with BOFA (called the # in back of my cc). These number don't belong to BOFA. They told me to email abuse@bankofamerica.com but I don't think they are doing anything about this since we already reported it many times. BE CAREFUL

I had the same message saying it was a non-marketing call from 18662314406 and that i should call them with a marketing number.luckily i checked this website.
