I got a call from "Vicky" asking me to call about my recent Macy's order, to this number.  She said to call before 3pm on Feb 14th (weird...3pm?  what kind of business day is that?).  She gave my order number so I checked it online to make sure it was legit, and I have no orders under that number.  I had made an order recently though, so I don't know how they know that I made one - worrying.  Anyway, it sounded bogus so I googled the number.  Now I know I shouldn't call back.

Claimed to be the consumer protection agency calling to verify my shipping address from an order I placed the day before with Macys.  I told her the city and state but that I couldn't recall the street.  She then told me the shipping street address and asked if that sounded right.  It was.  Then she told me thank you and hung up.  I called Macy's right after to check the story with them and they told me they do call and ask people to verify information over the phone sometimes but never credit card info.

Had the same experience as "M" above. It's wierd.

How do they know that you have just placed an order with a department store???

    Didn't call them back.

They know you placed an order because they are from the department store.  That department does security for Macy's and Bloomingdale's (both owned by the same company).

Received a voicemail message to call 1-866-282-8977 (Macy.com).  I called back and they said they were veryifying that I placed an order on-line, and gave me the last four digits of my credit card and the amount. The order was for gift cards that I did not place, so I told them not to accept the order.  Then I called my bank to cancel the card.  The bank told me there had been attempted charges, but they did not go through.  Both were mainline retailers.  It all seemed legitimate, but my question is how did they know my unlisted phone number?

If this is true - the staff are very unprofessional and sound highly dubious. I cannot believe reputable companies like Macy's and Bloomingdales would use such a shoddy service. When you google the phone number, neither Macy's nor Bloomingdales come up.

I got the same thing. I ordered online from bloomingdales the night before and got a voicemail left the next day. The person asked that I call back to verify some info about an order before 9am the next day.

I called back and they verified my shipping and billing address. And the order went through.

They do this just to make sure that someone didn't steal your credit card info and started ordering things online.
Thinking of it now though, I honestly think the credit card industry don't do enough to protect against identity theft.

My wife received a call with a request to call back to 1-866-282-8977 about a Macy's order from macys.com, giving her an order number as well.  I did not place any order from Macys.com - EVER.

I'll be calling Macy's actual customer service line (1-800-289-6229) to check on this.

They called from 18662828977 and said someone was ordering gift cards on my macy's card. Asked for the last 4 dig on my social and also my birthday and address. I verified the first, gave a wrong social on the second and said no to the address because by now I was suspicious. I called macy's.com on their number which was 1800BUYMACY and they couldn't tell me if they called but they did tell me that someone with an email candle480@yahoo.com had placed an order for giftcards on my account. For all I know it was the fraud person who called to get more info or it could have been macy's. However, it could have been macy's because they gave me the order number which I relayed to the macy's people. I cancelled my macy's card immediately and I presume they are now investigating the fraud.  I hope it's a jail sentence and more for that lying thieving scumbag. My advice, don't give any info on the phone. Get the information and then call Macy's back on a known number and ask them to look up your account and see what the last charges were.

Received a call but didn't pick up - caller left message identifying himself as calling from Macys.com to confirm an order and provided a reference number for me to use when I called back.  I did call back and provided the reference number - all the person asked is that I verify the shipping address as it was different than my billing address.  Glad they checked. By the way, the number that appeared on my called id was 513-398-5221 which is listed on macysinc.com under "Macys Credit and Customer Services".

I got a call from "Nikki" saying that I need to call her back with my Macy's card number to confirm my online order. I called her back and she asked me for my Macy's account numer and social security number, I told her I rather not give that out, she said, I can't help you if you don't give it to me, so i told her I'll call her back. First of all who calls asking for your social, even sallie mae only ask me for my last four numbers to my ss. Second I never made and online order through macy's, and last of all even if I made an online order, macy's would not call me asking to verify  my acc. number and ssn. I called Macy's, they said someone purchased a gift card for $150.00 online and it was fraud, so they voided out. If you get a call from this number 1-866-282-8977 don't give them any info, company's don't call to verify your info. if you purchase products online. Its just some pathetic broke bumb tryin to take your money.

Got a call from them saying someone had ordered something on Macy's.com and Bloomingdales.com, which I hadn't.  They advised to call and have my credit card cancelled for fraudulent charges.  I called my credit card company and they confirmed there was charges from Macy's and Bloomingdales on my card.  So from my experience they seemed legit and definitely saved me from having the fraudulent charges going through.

Someone called me from this number today. A scammer stole my Visa number and bought a $200 gift card from Macys.com. I called my Visa company and had the card canceled. They had also charged $1 on iTunes -- probably to test whether the number worked before trying a large purchase. It's safe to call that phone number and talk to the operator. They don't ask for your whole cc number -- just ask you to verify the last 4 digits.

Got a call from this number. It was Bloomingdale's customer protection line. It sounds very unprofessional (no introduction when you call them and called themselves "Consumer Protection"), but they only asked me to verify my shipping address. I would be nervous to give them anything else.

I received a call from this number that left a message and indicated a reference number and that they were calling about an Online Macys order.  I had not placed an order with Macys so I was very curious.  I called back and they said they were from Consumer Fraud Protection and that they worked to verify Macys and Bloomingdales on-line orders.  I gave them the reference number they then asked me my name which I refused to give to them.  I then called Macys Consumer Affairs Office at 877-493-9116 and spoke with a gentleman who indicated that the phon number left in the message was a valid number.  Apparently, with certain high risk orders this office will call to verify the order.  The order associated with my number was canceled and I can now verify whether they used my credit card number or just used my phone number.

Got a call from this number, said he was calling about a Macy's Gift Card purchase I made today using a Visa card.  He provided a reference number.  I called him back at 866-282-8977 and answered his questions.  Then I called Visa and they said there were two $100 gift cards ordered at Macy's.  I'm calling Macy's next.

I got a call from (513) 398-5221 at 8:23PM. They left a voice mail with a reference number and a 866 number to call. I called both and received voice mail to call during normal business hours. I have read many of the above posts and it seems like it could just be crappy credit card protection. BUT, I DONT HAVE A MACY'S credit card? What gives?
