caller claimed to be from Canada Student Loan but I could not verify the # as assigned to them. Asked for my social insurance # and birthdate and address, could be identity theft.

I got the same call.  The number they provided did not line up with the number on the official government website.

Got same call.  They previously called twice and left messages on my answering machine asking for me to call back at 1-800-668-9398.  The number didn't match the real government loans service center.

This time, they called just now (Sat 8:38 am) and asked me to call back at 1-866-303-3503 (I pretended to not be me, since I was expecting them).  And they asked me to call back between Mon-Fri 8 am - 8 pm (yet I get this call from them on Sat morning?).

i got the same call. a message was left for me to call 1-800-222-52501 and insisted the extra number was legit. also to call 1 866-303-3503 in the alternative between 6:30 am - 11 pm. Very bizarre.

Same here; my dad's from Centennial College, and he's just about to negotiate his student loan. A caller who didn't leave any identifying information asked him to call them back. Because we didn't know who it was, I decided to reverse-411 the # (which was a fruitless search) and then Google led me to this page.

I'm not even a student and they have left messages on my machine at least 5 times.  I have no idea how they got my number or why they'd be calling me.  Smells like a scam to me.

I just called National Student Loan Service right after I received a call asking me to call back at 1-866-303-3503.  The lady on the phone confirmed someone called me 5 minutes before, and since I called the official number I think it's okay.  Our following conversation happened during the official line though, mind you.

All she asked for was my name, and she provided me with other informations, so I assume everything is okay.  While I couldn't get a straight verification of the number (The lady seemed kinda rushed), I strongly suggest people to call and verify the number so others don't have to worry.

After picking up a message on my home phone from 866 -303-3503 "National Loans", asking me to call them back between 8-3 EST, & got suspicious, as I work in banking. Contacted National Student Loans by looking up their number on their website: 1 888 815-4514.  Rep there advised that similar types of calls have been reported in Eastern Canada. I have reported my incident to the RCMP Phonebusters.
Please see their site - it could save you money and anguish!

Been getting messages on my cell phone of late from these people.  The last one was received today, being Saturday so was quite suspicious.  The loan people have my home address so assume if they needed me they would mail me info.  I just want to thank all who have reported these similar calls - because now I plan on calling the number from their site to confirm.  Thank you all!

    twice bitten
"They" have called twice saying that it is very important to return the call immediately.  The second time I told her I thought it was a scam and she denied knowing anything about that.  She hurriedly left the number to call and hung up.  Perhaps the police should be notified.

i was suspicious too, they called me pretty frequently around mid october leaving messages. i didn't call back since the number didn't match anything i had gotten from the nslsc, and then i picked up and talked to the person (it was the same person every time, which seemed shady to me) she asked for my birth date. when i hesitated said to call back and gave me same number. i said 'that doesn't match the numbers on the papers', and she got upset and said 'well then call the number on the paper' and hung up on me. after that they hadn't called me until today, got a message on my machine (different person though)  anyway, the real point of this long story is that i searched the number on the nslsc site, and it's there as a pre-consolidation contact number. it's on the contacts page.  so i SUPPOSE it's legit, even though it seems incredibly shady. they should really do something about that.

These people called me on my cell phone today, asking for Anne.

I googled the phone number and came across this site.

    Sounds like a scam!

This number called me and the person on the other line just kept repeating "hello" whenever I would say it. Very strange, so I just hung up.

The number is listed on their website as the Pre-Consolidation number. They called me, asked if I wanted to discuss my repayment options, asked if I could provide them with my DOB and SIN. I said no, and that I would call them back from the website number. I was informed to call the number in question, couldn't find it at first on the site and just googled it and it came up on http://www.canlearn.ca/en/support/contact_us/cnt.shtml, but not as the main number.

Received several calls from 905-306-6220. They claimed to be from Canada Student Loans (CanLearn) and asked for personal information (presumably to confirm my identity). I asked for a number to call back and got 1-888-803-9698 as a response. Neither number seems to be listed. I phoned 1-866-587-7452 (from the CanLearn website) to respond, and the agency had in fact been calling me.

I do believe the calls to be legitimate, but highly irresponsible. The Canadian Government insists upon people giving out their personal information to anyone that calls?

Visit http://www.canlearn.ca/en/support/contact_us/ for alternative numbers to call if you are still weary about giving your information out to anybody calling your home, as you should be.

The number 1-866-303-3503 can be found on CanLearn website at
    http://www.canlearn.ca/eng/main/help/contact/csl.shtml

When I got a call, the caller asked me for SIN and DOB.
Instead of giving the information, I asked for the number to call. And 1-866-303-3503 is the number the caller gave me.

This number looks legitimate. I called and asked the rep to verify my info after giving her few information.

It is good that many people are precautious about possible identity theft attempt.
