Look, it's pretty easy to verify that this number is legit. Here's how:

    1) web-search the name they gave you: national student loan service.
It leads to this page, as well as their page: http://www.canlearn.ca/eng/main/help/contact/csl.shtml

See the number listed there (beware, it's not the first number, so use CTRL/F to "find in page"; it's listed on their page. So far so good. But is the web site legit?

    2) Go to "gc.ca". This is a second-level domain run by the Government of Canada, and likely (but never 100%) to be who it claims to be.

Go to gc.ca's search page and type in "student loan". Then use CTRL/F again to look for "www.canlearn.ca". If this link exists, it establishes a chain of trust from gc.ca to canlearn, and from canlearn to the 866 number.

Sure enough, the link is there.

So: don't take anybody's word for it, but follow the steps listed here. Similar thinking will get you the straight goods on most web sites.

Actually I typed that too fast, the link from gc.ca takes you to http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/learning/canada_student_loan/index.shtml (which is also a legit gc.ca site), and the link is there to "canlearn.ca".

866-303-3503 - NSLSC - means you need to pay back your student loans.

I refused to give my DOB when they called and simply called them back at 888-815-4514 (national student loan contact number) instead of the number they gave me to contact. (866-303-3503).  They did confirm they called.  I put a complaint, as how can we be certain it is them calling  - they informed me that they understand but they need to verify they are speaking to the proper person.
I will not give any personal info to anyone who calls me. At least if I call them, I am assured to whom I am speaking to.

It is a legit number. It is their repayment number, but I called through the main number just to be sure.

Got a recorded message from "student loan service centre" from 1-905-306-6249 to call this number. I phoned the legitimate student loan number, and they could not identify the number, and told me to get my son to call the number on the website.

I had the 905 number call me, but never answered as I don't answer unknown numbers.

As it has been stated before, 1-866-303-3503 IS A LEGITIMATE number.
I recently received my loan consolidation contract from the NSLSC and this number was not listed as their contact number, which I think is unfortunate.

If they call you, call the 1-866-303-3503 number. It is very quick to speak with an operator. You do not need to give them your SIN, I used my loan number and had them get my records through that.
This number is the best number to call. I tried calling the number listed on the website (1-888-815-4514) and found it pointless. There was no operator to speak to, merely menu options, and none which were helpful.

The 1-905-306-6249 number is most likely an outsourced call center that is used to send out the automated message. That is why it is unrecognized.

    justcalled
I just called back the number 1-866-303-3503  because they had called my house, and I first looked on the National Student Loan website and saw that it was one of the numbers listed. They really are the loan service, it's like their customer service line because when i called their main number, I saw that you can't actually talk to a person on the phone. After reading all of these posts, I was wary about calling the 303 number, but they really were the loan service, they even had the same voice recording at the beginning, but you can talk to someone at this number. They gave me the information I needed, and they asked for a SIN so they could locate my file. Nothing to worry about.

It's legit, just call the number that's on their website and talk to them if you're so concerned. 1-888 815-4514 from my letter is the number I called since the other one sounded weird on the voice mail.

I received a message from the same number 1800 668 9398 (which was actually a 905 number as it appeared on my phone archive) and I reported it to Canada Student Loans as it sounded fishy. Indeed it was so if you received this call DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION. They are not Legit.

i called the National student loan center (NSLC) about the call regarding called tri-Cura (sp) Canada, 1-800-668-9398,  who claims to be a representative for the NSLC, andasked me to call them back regarding my student loan. The NSLC verified to me that they are legit and they will notify them to stop calling me, since i called in to the NSLC, rather than Tri-Cura Canada, to check-up regarding my account.
