    Have received calls from this number several times a day for several days now.  The one time I did answer, they asked for another person (who I don't know), when I told them they had a wrong number and that I did not know this person, they proceeded to ask for my name and wanted to know how long I had be using the number they called.  When I pressed them for information, 'Jan' said she was calling from 'Alliance' - an 'Account Management Company'  She said that she would verify the name and number.  However, I'm continuing to receive calls several times daily.  If these are credit collectors looking for someone else, how do I stop the calls?  If this is a scam, what are they trying to do/what info are they trying to get?  Again, how do I stop the calls?  Why would they need my name if they are trying to collect from someone else?  I have registered a complaint with the 'Do not call registry' but don't know if that will help.

    Jan,
    Filing a complaint with the "Do Not Call Registry" will do no good, as Alliance One, a debt collector is exempt from their rules. But they are NOT exempt from the rules of the FDCPA, which (among other things), state that they MUST validate the debt:

    § 809.  Validation of debts   [15 USC 1692g]

    (a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing --

    (1) the amount of the debt;

    (2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;

    (3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;

    (4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and

    (5) a statement that, upon the consumer's written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor.

    (b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the consumer requests the name and address of the original creditor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt, or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment, or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy of such verification or judgment, or name and address of the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt collector.

    (c) The failure of a consumer to dispute the validity of a debt under this section may not be construed by any court as an admission of liability by the consumer.

    They are after the WRONG person, and if they can't prove that you owe this debt, they get NOTHING.

    Go to Budd Hibbs' website: http://www.budhibbs.com/ There is a lot of helpful advice here.

    Good luck!

    Received a call a couple weeks ago from someone named Darth Vader.  He said he was looking for Luke and asked if I knew him.  Well, Luke is my nephew but I told him Luke hasn't lived here for more than 10 years since he joined the rebellion and moved to Dagoba (last I heard).  However, Mr. Vader won't take no for an answer and continues to call here repeatedly.  He keeps threatening to use Force or something.  I'm not really sure who he is or what he wants, but I wish he would cease and desist!

    So you are from the company that keeps calling me.  Okay, well tell me this...how the heck do I get off your list?  Your people keep calling my husband and we have told them multiple times that we are not and do not know the person they are looking for.  It's not even the same name for God's sake.  I'm tired of it and I will file a complaint if it's not stopped.

    Have received a call at 8:31 pm on June 19,2008 from this number. A lady asked for someone with a diffrent name. I told her she had a wrong number, she proceeded to ask for my name and I told her why she needs to know my name if that is not me. She said I owe $1000 from Visa capital One credit card. I told her I don't have any credit card from capital one. She said she would verify my name from my phone number since I didn't tell my name. She hanged up.

    If these are credit collectors looking for someone else, how do I stop the calls?  Why would they need my name if they are trying to collect from someone else?

    Get several calls a day from this number.  They never leave a message.  Just hang up.  Last phone call I got, the male voice said F***ing Dumb Hoe before hanging up. I will be taking steps to make sure these people do not do this again.  Especially since I have a child in the house who heard this message.

    I get calls from this number many times. I finally answered it today and it was a recorded call, so I called back the number on my caller ID. The girl said that they were looking for a person who is not in my household and has never been and I do not know. I told her to take my number off her call list. I have no belief that she will.

    THIS MIGHT BE A SCAM. After reading , I have been called by this number with the exact same situation. He was looking for a Jody Duncan.. I told him he had the wrong number and he said "No this is the right number" - I said no sir, you have the wrong number." Then he went on saying he was confused. I told him "Well sorry for your trouble" and hanged up on him since he clearly just wanted to argue that he was calling this mysterious 'Duncan' resident. Not sure what these people are up to but they are starting to become a nuisance.

    We have been getting calls from various agencies, including international ones, all for the same person.  It all started off with Alliance, they were told they had the wrong number, throughout the five years, various agencies have been told that they had the wrong person.  I stopped picking up the phone and in return got angry messages with people yelling, and rattling paper around in the phone while sighing impatiently.  I changed my greeting to say if you are calling for said person, you have the wrong number and to stop calling or I will report them to the authorities, etc.  I even got very angry at one poor guy and was yelling at him.  Our landlord even called them and told them that the person in question never lived at our address, and for them to stop harassing us.  It has begun again, and from Alliance.  My husband repeated the "wrong number" thing.  We will see.   I will probably yell at them again.  I don't see why they cannot take us off the list.  Another agency called a while back for some woman, I phoned them back, told them wrong number, etc. They took my name and apologized, said I might get another call or two before my number drops off of their roster, and after that it should be good.  I never even received another call from them.  Sorry this is so disjointed, I am rushing to finish this before so I can eat the delicious curry my husband has made!  Yum.

    Folks, if the collection agency is calling, transfer your existing homeline to a cell phone and inform them they are calling your cell phone.

    Laws regulating cell phones and debt collection are much more stringent.

Report a phone call from 866-367-6660:

The company that called you.
