- Chris| 1 replyI bought some books at Books-A-Million and now I have to pay for a Time Magazine subscription, too?? I'm only 18, I don't want to lose any more money than I already have to pay on other stuff! Besides, I just got fired from my job, and with the way the economy is, getting another one is like pulling teeth. What the heck am I supposed to do?
- Chris replies to ChrisBy the way, I've tried calling them a few times and it said that they were experiencing technical difficulties. This has been over the past two months now.
- Robin replies to sj9002| 5 repliesHEY - I THINK YOU ARE OUTNUMBERED HERE! There's no need to get so OFFENSIVE just because people trust what a CASHIER TELLS HIM/HER!!
ALL OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DECEIVED OR THEY WOULD NOT BE WRITING! That does not mean they are ignorant, just trusting! I am not 17 years old; I am 44, and I heard from the cashier that I get two free magazine subscriptions. What they did not DISCLOSE to me was that it was automatic renewal and that the subscriptions were ONLY for 2 months. IF THEY HAD, I WOULD HAVE DECLINED!!
The TINY post card I received in the mail DID "disclose" the automatic renewal, which I immediately began calling so that I could cancel before the free subscriptions ended and before the charges began, but the problem that I am having NOW is that every time I try to call the above 866 #, a recording states that they are experiencing problems and that I need to call back later! It is not a 24/7 number, so I have to call during the day. No web site and no automatic cancellation, which appears to be a marketing scheme and scandal.
I like BAM, but I am about to report to them that they need to cancel this program, or I am cancelling my business with them! - Ashley replies to Bailey| 8 repliesCall 1-866-494-3117 and they will refund your money!!
- Chris38355| 1 replyI was also scammed by BAM. I didn't purchase any kind of card, but I did use my debit card. No, I did not read the fine print. The guy asked me if I wanted the FREE magazines, got my name and address, and I signed the receipt for my PURCHASE. I saw this number on my statement, and since it's the weekend they are closed so I found out what is going on by this website. I called BAM and the manager was nice. She said the same thing happened to her husband at Best Buy. I still will never do business with BAM ever again. They know what they are doing. The way I see it is the magazine company does this to a few million people and even if they do give your money back, that few days it sits in their account they will make a lot in interest. So, I think we should be entitled to some of the interest we made for them and definitely interested in joining a class action. I will report BAM, once I get my money back. My email is Chris38355@yahoo.com if anyone hears about a class action or wants to pursue it. Thanks.
Chris - lil ma| 1 replyToday is the second time that they have done this to me....the first time they charged me 34.95 and this time they charged me 56.95....This is crazy....The first time I couldn't figure out where this money was coming from, but I know now. I'm calling them as soon as it turns 7:00. They shouldn't be doing this....I'm a 19 yr old college student that works at a minimum wayge paying job, I have a car payment of $350, and i have a cell phone bill to pay....I just can't afford it.
- kadams129 replies to mcw| 1 replyI too had this charge on my card which is why I explored it on the net. I have a bad memory and forgot about the magazine subscription I purchased through Books A Million. I assure you that this is NOT A SCAM by Books A Million, only poor customer service on the part of the employee that renewed your membership. When I purchased my Books A Million card the employee asked me if I would like a subscription to a magazine. He explained that I would receive my first 8 issues free and then be charged $29.95 for the remaining issues. I took the subscription. I would however report what happened to you to your local Books A Million store to try to keep this from happening to anyone else.
- Nikebacksthefalcons replies to mcwWoke up this morning to a charge on my bank account for $39.95 so first thing I do is google the phone number to see what the company is because it is listed as NY company, I live in Tn. So I call them just as soon as they open they cancel my subscription as well as my wife's and credit the money back(in 3 to 5 days)
- ndirishlc9 replies to Bailey| 7 repliesActually, the magazines have nothing to do with the BAM cards. You can purchase a BAM card during your transaction and that's it. The subscription will be offered to you after, but it is offered to everyone, even those who do not choose to purchase a BAM card. Just ask for clarification before every purchase you make at any store. I did the subscription, but canceled after 3 issues, my husband on the other hand kept up with his Sports Illustrated.
- Sarahplainandtall replies to milton cguthrie| 1 replyUm, you had to have given them information for the magazines to be sent to you, right? How could you have been surprised...
- Bobisawesome replies to plainsman105How is that even possible? You never shopped there? Would a significant other or child have possibly signed up under your name...?
- Mikeandkate replies to RobinI need to agree with the guy who wrote about it not being a scam...just because you weren't about to figure out 8 weeks=2 months or that a postcard with a number needs to be replied to in order to cancel it, doesn't make it a "trick". Seriously...that is pretty much the definition of ignorant.
- upset customerPeople - Books a Million is making this one of their money making schemes. My neighbors kid works for them and they HAVE TO SELL A CERTAIN NUMBER OF SUBCRIPTIONS OR GET WRITTEN UP. After they are written up a certain amount of times - the BAM employees are fired. That is why you are not being told the truth!!!!!! I tried to help the kid out & got a subscription. I then canceled my subcription by going on to the magazines website (for example People.com) before my "free trial" ended and canceled it online. Hope this helps and write to BAMs corporate office and tell them how silly it is that a book store tries to push magazine subscriptions and their employees need to lie to keep their jobs!!!

205-942-3737 - jujuI am about to make that call. I was fully aware that I needed to cancel after getting 8 free copies of People, but I never got the free copies.
- Onewhopaysattention replies to KLF| 2 repliesYou have to GIVE Bam YOUR information to get the magazines. They didn't steal your card. The way it works is simple. Every time you use a credit or debit card to pay for a purchase you are offered 8 weeks of a free mag. (Thus you have given them your card number to use) The worker is SUPPOSED to explain how the thing works. They send you free mags for 8 weeks, you keep track, and decide whether or not you want to keep them. If you don't cancel it within the 8 weeks you get charged for a subscription. It's not a scam, nor is it that complicated. It's all explained and even PRINTED IN REGULAR SIZE PRINT on your recited. If something does go wrong the magazine companies usually have no problem refunding the money.
- Onewhopaysattention replies to RobinYou receipt is printed in normal size font. When you agree to the magazines the size of your receipt doubles. It's longer because it EXPLAINS IN FULL the magazine program. It tells you that yes you CAN cancel at anytime with any of the magazines websites, and even GIVES you the websites. The cashier is supposed to explain that "Remember you have to cancel by the end of the 8 weeks, or you will be charged with an auto subscription renewal." The problem with this is for some reason a lot of people don't pay attention once they think they are getting free stuff. All the information for cancellation and what may be charged to you is spoken and even PRINTED for you.
- Onewhopaysattention replies to Robin| 2 repliesYou realize that many major book stores (such as Books-A-Million and Barns & Nobel) do this magazine program? It's just one store chain. It's a couple.
- Onewhopaysattention replies to mcw| 1 replyBAM didn't give anyone your card information. The only way you can be offered free mags for 8 weeks is by USING a credit or debit card. Therefore the information is all set to charge you if you don't cancel. There is no "fine print". It's all there on your receipt in regular size font. They will even give you the pan flit if you ask for it. Hardly fine print.
- Onewhopaysattention replies to Chris38355Report BAM for what? You can't report them for a scam if all the information is printed on your receipt and GIVEN TO YOU.
No it isn't fair if the employee doesn't inform you that you will be charged after a certain time. But when is any EVER completely free? Read the info on the receipt, it explains EVERYTHING. How the program works, how to cancel (online and by phone), and why you would be charged.
BAM is not the only book company that offers these magazine TRIAL subscriptions. So next time when offered you might ask questions or actually read the receipt.
