if you don't have any debts, maybe they have a mistaken account, you may want to contact them to clear it up.

or they could be calling you to get in touch with someone else.

    Mrs. D
Calling for the information on an old relative I haven't seen or spoken to in years. Wanted to get new contact information for this relative by which I did not have. Said it was urgent to get in contact with this person and asked if I could give out another person's info. so they could contact him/her regarding the distant relative. Stressed the urgency. I did and do not yet know how they got my number or my name. Really concerned!!

    THIS PRACTICES HAS TO STOP!
This people called me to my work place to try to get in contact with a sibling of mine which I have lost contact years ago.  I told them that I lost contact with them and Scott Ames (that the name he used this time), started threatening me so I told him that I would contact my lawyer.   After that I got a call from my landlord who he had contact to get in touch with me. .
I contacted my lawyer who said that under Fed. Fair Debt Practices Act they can't contact any third party, not even if I would be in debt..

HERE IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:

Write a letter like the one in page 2  posted by Alfalfa on 1/28/2008  and following all her instructions

There's some confusion in these posts between collections agencies (understandably, since the scam/illegal ones try to give themselves names that are similar to legal enterprises).
The site  BudHibbs.com  lists scam debt collectors with the title "Collectors to Avoid."
Capital Recovery Systems (also CR Systems) out of Plainfield, MA, is NOT on that list.  They are legit: a licensed, bonded, insured company that conducts the unpleasant business of debt collection legally.  Names that are similar, and are on the list as dishonest scam artists, are:
    - Capital Recovery Services (CRS), Fairfax, VA
    - Capital Recovery Services Group, Huntington Beach, CA
    - Capital Management Services aka Center One Financial, Buffalo, NY
If you get calls from these guys or any others that appear on budhibbs.com , don't just hang up and don't erase messages that they leave.  Get the case number of whatever case they claim they're calling about, and file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office of whatever state the agency works out of, and keep the messages as evidence.
I got  budhibbs.com  from the NY State Attorney General's office, BTW.  Those guys (any state AG office) are extremely helpful with regard to abusive/illegal debt collections.

    First, get your facts straight.
Of course a debt collections agency has your name and will ask for you by your name.  They have all the personal information that your original credit card company (or whatever you owe money to) had about you, including family members as contact numbers.
FYI: Bad debt is bought and sold just like inventory overstock in a clothing store. The original company will sell its bad debts (unpaid credit card balances, etc.) in a big bundle to a collections agency who will attempt to collect on each account for a period of time.  If that agency doesn't succeed, they will re-sell the debt in another bundle of bad debts to a different collections agency, who tries again.  Depending on how old the debt is, there can be several links in the chain.
It is ILLEGAL for more than one collections agency to phone at the same time about the same debt, since only one agency at a time can own that debt.  But it's not (unfortunately) illegal for a collections agency to try to track down the person who owes that money in order to have it paid off.  Go to the Massachusetts US Attorney General's Office homepage:
     http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=cagohomepage&L=1&L0=Home&sid=Cago
    Then follow:
Home > Consumer Protection > Credit and Financial Literacy > Consumer Credit > Fair Debt Collection
The site of any state Attorney General's Office will have similar information.  The site lists the ways in which debt collectors are allowed to contact you.  CR Systems (Capital Recovery Systems) out of Plainfield, MA, operates within the law.  At least 3 other companies with very similar names do not, and they are "blacklisted" on  budhibbs.com  (very useful site).
Face it, folks: debts do have to be paid, and debt collection is a legitimate business, even if it does piss you off to be reminded of that $400 credit card bill from five years ago that you were hoping everyone had forgotten about.  But even if they aren't exactly popular, debt collectors can still conduct their business legally, and sometimes even politely.  I had to work with Capital Recovery Systems (CR Systems in Plainfield, MA -- again, don't confuse these guys with scam companies that have similar names) a lot to settle a debt and I speak from experience.  After the first unpleasant shock of that first phone call, they were fine.
There are other collections agencies, e.g., Tri-Financial (Tri-Fi) in New York state, that engage in dishonest, abusive, and fraudulent practices in the name of debt collection.  File a complaint about such "businesses" with their state AG's office.  It's a nuisance to fill out the form, but necessary.  It sounds like a lot of people have been wrongfully and illegally harrassed and frightened by such dishonest twerps.

Yes, you should pay your bills... to the ORIGINAL creditor, not some parasitic third party!

The scam debt collectors are known to choose people at random to extort.

    Point of contact
I received two calls within 10 minutes looking for my sister.  Tina's message consisted of her name, a file #, and a # to call back and that there was an potential legal issue that Tina was sure that my sister was not aware of.  When I began to question the validity of the call Tina became very irate.  When I questioned if this was a collection agency, she politely hung up on me.  When I called back, I asked for Tina whom in my opinion was too ashamed to speak with me since she did not act a as professional should.  I did speak with a Scott Aims(unsure of last name).  He was at least professional.  Wouldn't answer if CRS was a collection company, but professional.  This has happened to me in the past where companies have called me looking for my siblings.  I don't have any issues, don't call me.

received a call from 866-553-1950 from tina, claiming to have a possible legal action against me regarding some unnamed matter.  she left a message stating that she needed to receive a call from me before she left the office.  I don't have any unpaid bills and am a very responsible person financially.  I am convinced this is a scam of some sorts, because I looked this number up on the internet and have discovered that many people have received this same kind of message.

    Nice try troll.
Problem is, the only 'economy' that may get 'stabilized' is your own.
The money will never see the original creditor as it more tha likely has already been written off by them as per law.

Yesterday I got 5 calls within 2 hours from this phone number. I was working at the time so I couldn't have answered even if I wanted to. I have no overdue bills so I know they would've tried to scam me had I answered. Thanks everyone for posting about this.
