ON TO THEM replies to dirkdiggler
This is a scam. They offered me more money back that the fees charged for my overdraft. I owed $70. They offered $160.00 if I gave them a cc to clear up the overdraft. I don't think banks give away money. Also, If you call Wachovia your representative will call them and they will give a legitimate employee number. Still a SCAM!!! Someone internally is feeding them information!!!!

I too am a Bank employee. A friend of mine just told me about this after she got a called and went online to check the phone number. Unfortunately all employees are not trustworthy. I know of a group of seven employees fired for being involved in a checking account scam. Most of them seemed to be intelligent respectable people, some were college students and some had families to support. From my understanding their scam took a lot of planning and tedious work and went undetected for several months. I found it very very sad that their efforts were not put into developing something legal. As surprised as I was, I doubt that any bank escapes such events. Major banks hire thousands and thousands of people with clean criminal records and excellent references but there is still no gaurantee. Despite the excessive amount tactics in place to prevent this type of thing. There are people that will figure out a way to do it and take the risks.

Said they were from Wachovia.  They are lying and everyone who posts here saying it's legit is lying as well.

    Nice try!
Just keep them on the phone as long as you can to try and stop their crimes.  I wonder how they get these people to work for them.  What kind of want ad do you put in the paper for a job to call people and try and steal from them?

I verified with Wachovia customer service this afternoon that the "Deposit Recovery" division is indeed affiliated with Wachovia Bank NA. The calls I received were so aggressive and unprofessional that I assumed it was a scam of some sort. Turns out a dormant account of mine had received a credit of $8 that triggered a low balance fee and ultimately an account debit. I ignored the Deposit Recovery Division and called Wachovia directly. They were nice enough to send me a check for the $8 credit, write off the low balance fee, and close my accout over the phone.

i think anyone that is saying this is not a scam must be in on it! there is no need ever for you to give out personal information on the phone such as you ss# or account #. its ridiculous.

what i want to know is why law enforcement isn't on this. obviously tons of people are getting these calls and i ma sure many have fallen for this scam. someone needs to get the law involved here

They aren't the idiot. Anyone who is willing to throw out a rude comment such as that is the true idiot.  There is a real scam going on and somehow this George Hampton has gotten a hold of Wachovia’s back door number to their recovery department and people who haven’t even over drafted their accounts are getting called.  Maybe your one of the scammers and that's why you’re so ready to throw out names. I work for Wachovia, I have had 2 people come in this week and verify this story.  One customer recorded the message that was left on his voice mail and then recorded the conversation between George Hampton and himself when he called the number back.  He was smart and did not give out any information.  George kept telling him that his account was seriously over drawn and that he needed to pay it right then with a credit card and he needed to first verify his account by giving his account number, SS # and then credit card #.  My customer instead told him that he would call customer service instead and check with them due to he knew that his account was not over drawn.  George then became ugly with him.  He at that point just hung up.  We suspect that this George Hampton is somehow taping into individuals phone lines and therefore being able to redirect their call when they call the true Wachovia 1-800 number to go to them instead.  Once they have either obtained the information they had hoped for or did not they disconnect.

You are representing  yourself as an employee of Wachovia.  Such language and attitude will only hurt Wachovia’s business, not to mention yourself, instead of helping anyone on this site with any problems/issues they may be having.

Hi, I just started getting these messages on my home voicemail too. Coincidently, it started two days after I had forgotten the debit card in the machine and I called cancel it. Noticing by the several comments on this website, I can't see why this has been going on for so long.

I started receiving calls from this number today and it was almost exactly like the others have described. I confirmed with the bank using a valid phone number on my statement that there was no problem with my account.
I cannot understand how someone can be running this exact same scam using the same phone number for a year and has not been stopped. I filed a complaint with the States Attorney General of NC regarding this matter.

Have been receiving multiple voice mails.  All short that say: "This is George Hampton from Wachovia.  Call me."  Strange since I don't have a Wachovia account.

Received three persistent calls at home.  The person told my wife they were from Wachovia and that it was urgent they speak with me.  They would tell her nothing (even though her name is on all the accounts).  She would not give them my work number and took their number for me to call.  Calling the number from my local Wachovia branch, the person on the other end gave the code number, but was not able to be found in the Wachovia system.  Then when asked to speak with a manager, they hung up on Wachovia!

Says they are Draft Recovery for overdrawn accounts for Wachovia. They ask for my account number. I told them my account was not overdrawn and I will contact my bank myself.

Received this call 5 times today.....I have 5 accts with Wachovia and none of them are overdrafted nor would an overdraft require 5 calls in a 4 hour period unless...maybe....the entire banking system is set to blow up at 4pm if they don't talk to me so the need to call me every 45 minutes is urgent and the lives of every Wachovia employee depends on it.....I'm going to have to think about this one.....

I received 3 messages one day from a recorded message that says This is George Hampton from Wachovia, please call me. I called the number and recording asked me to hold for a representative and have my account number and ssn ready. "John" answered and said he needed some information to verify my information so that he knew he was giving banking information to the correct person. I ask what it was in regards to and all he would tell me was that he was from deposit recovery. He again asked to verify my information so would I please give him my address and phone number. Warning bells were going off big time by now ESPECIALLY since they never told me who they were calling for...never said my name at all. They wanted me to give it to them. I hung up and immediately called the 24 hour Wachovia line. There is NO listing for a George Hampton at Wachovia AND the deposit recovery department closes at 4:30 EST. It was 8:15 when "John" answered. The real Wachovia rep confirmed my account in good standing not even close to being overdrawn, no flags, no messages, no notes for someone to call me. And no record of anyone trying to contact me due to an issue with my account. Rep confirmed my suspicions that this was indeed a scam. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER AND GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!!!
