    TOTAL SCAM!!!

    I received an UNKNOWN call on my cell phone.  "Brittany" with the National Process Server's Association said I had two warrants for my arrest and provided a "Court Docket Number" despite failing to confirm my name, social or date of birth.

    I refused to provide my current work address.  She said that I should get my supervisor and wait at the front desk for the process server.  I advised her that my work was private and refused my home address.  She said I would be arrested.

    This is completely false! I ran my credit report and there are no returned checks... not to mention that I haven't used checks in (at least) ten years.

    When I called 866-676-2361 back - it appears to be a shady collection company trying to collect a debt from the party that had this number before me.  I guess they are resorting to this measure to scare people into paying.

    Got a blocked call from 866-676-2361 from "Maria Martin" from Liaisons office. Just called back, they told me a FEDERAL JUDGE was pursuing this charge against me. Because that sounds like something a federal court would spend time on; a 13 year old pay day loan. I asked for the docket number on the court filing. She said I could ask the judge. I started laughing so hard. She got really snippy, saying I was on camera getting a pay day loan of $575 and writing a check for that amount but now it was up to $775. Told her her they didn't do loans over $300 so having my check for $575 is either fraud or a lie. She started getting mad, said she could either help me before it went to court or I could talk to the judge about it and she wished me luck. I started laughing again and hung up.

    I received a call from an unknown number and a voicemail from an "investigator ryan" who said they received a fax from sierra legal services and the same info of summons and signature etc etc and to call 1-866-676-2361 before other legal matters occur against me. I have worked with a banker and our credit department and know where all our debts stand (and are debt free since last year) this is also the 2nd time this has happened in the past 6 months from this same number and 4th time in the past year from various people. I know this is a fraudulent situation and dont understand why they are trying so hard to trick people. thankful we are aware of our financial situations and can ignore such garbage! hope this helps put an end to them and saves other people grief.

    Same as the rest of the complaints this outfit called claiming they had a summons for my wife to be delivered I gave them no information regarding my wife and demanded information about why they would be trying to deliver a summons finally they made mention of a payday advance from 12 years ago and another bad debt that had long since been dissolved and fallen off her credit report years ago. I labeled them a scam debt collector and told them not to call my home again and threatened a legal action against them for trying to make my wife feel threatened into giving them money. They never did nor will they ever be able to contact my wife :O)    SCAM!!!!!!!

    Just got a call today from 866 676-2361 left a message on my house phone saying that I owed money on a payday loan from 2005. I called them back they said I had paid them in 2009 witch I had (Stupid on my part) but this time I asked for mailing address he wouldn't give it to me. Said I would be served paper tomorrow and that I would now owe 3,000 instead of 300$. I called him back again and said that I wanted a mail address he said why you can't mail in payment. I said my lawyer needs it and that you must give someone 30 days written notice and you have been harassing me. He said I have never said that so I said yes you did I record our first phone call he said THAT's AGAINST THE LAW. I said so and what you are doing is to I then asked for the company address again. He then said have you lawyers call me and hung up.

    I received a voice mal message from someone identifying himself as "Michael Douglas from Orange County." He left this number along with a reference number, saying he had a matter on which I would be served, etc., etc.

    I called the number and the company is Credit Check & Reporting, Inc. in the state of New York.  They are a legitimate arbitration firm.  What I found out is someone using my SSN and address - and a Yahoo! email that was NOT mine - applied for some sort of internet payday loan on August 19, 2005 and received funds.  So, I never used this Yahoo! email address, there is no phone number for this internet payday loan company, I have no bank statements going back to 2005 (since I destroy everything after 7 years), so I have no written proof to refute this matter. And, unless I can prove this, I am stuck paying for something I never received. They told me I could dispute this in court, but by the time I pay court costs, it's more than the so-called loan ($255) they claim was mine.  The lady with whom I spoke put a flag on my account to give me time to try and find out some information.  Thank goodness that I am now with LifeLock as several people (and not me) using my SSN have applied for credit.

    I totally agree with you on your post. I have been getting these for almost 5 years different numbers/and random people calling me. So sicken and tired of this. Not sure what needs to be done to stop these freaken people. I learned my lesson two years ago when I received one of these calls and paid them, and ended up to be a scam. That's when I contacted an attorney for advise and he's helps track these scammer down file against them.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
