A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via Green Dot, MoneyGram, Western Union, prepaid gift card or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

Got a call from them just a minute ago but this time the message said they were from cbcc but I doubt it because no one here owes nothing outstanding. Everything is up-to-date. But like I've said before... don't know the number, not gonna answer. Plus it's past 8pm... unnecessary to call at this hour.

I have also received a call from this number, and I called the Credit Bureau and turns out it is a legitimate #. The reason for collection turned out to be a mistake but glad I called to set things straight. I was surprised by the call because I've always squared my bills and thought it must be a scam. If you receive this call I would suggest to try to set things straight because it could affect your credit if they are asking for you.

Before calling any number like that back do some basic research which includes:
    1.  Check your accounts online to look for unauthorized transactions.
    2.  Look at your credit report for inaccurate information.  Be sure to dispute or at least question any items that are not accurate.
    3.  Get written confirmation over the alleged debt and name of alleged creditor.
    4.  Get name of collection agency that called and a verifiable mailing address.
    5.  Do not try to waste their time or get confrontational  with them.  Just go on a fact finding mission to get basic information.
    6.  Do not send money to unknown parties.
    7.  If they become abusive or make threats end the call.
    8.  Do not give your name or sensitive, private personal information including bank account numbers over the phone.

Most important, be very wary of anyone that claims the call is not a scam.  They could be a shill for the company or individual running a scam.  Do not reply to their posts.

Um ... you said the "cbcc" called.
I assume you meant "Credit Bureau of Canada Collections".
BUT ... the number in this thread is NOT listed on their site!

Can you give us a link to a Credit Bureau of Canada Collections page that shows this phone number?  If not, we will consider your post to be a shill for whomever owns this number.

So did the caller gave you the name of their business and the address of the business ?
Yet you don't mention that they did or did not. This is typical of shills.

"The reason for collection turned out to be a mistake but glad I called to set things straight."
    That's an intentionally vague statement.
    What was the mistake?
Was the mistake yours or was it theirs (or passed on to them from the original lender) ?
What got set straight? Their records? In just one phone call?  [ Amazing ! ]
Did you pay them any money? How much?

" ...  If you receive this call I would suggest to try to set things straight ..."
And you are vague about how one is supposed to set things straight.

All anyone who calls has to do is tell the people at this number to send a letter by USPS mail with proof the debt exists and the debtor has a right to collect it. Slim's post on 21 Aug 2016 contains the information.

Hi, sweetie, why did you come here?  I can see why you might come here BEFORE you called the number to determine who was calling but why after you know who called?  Hmmm.  A legitimate debt collector would identify their company on the caller ID as well as in the voicemail header.  I called your little number and the deliberately misleading "please hold for a representative" is further testament to your lying by omission.  So "Hi" I think you should examine your ethics and stop advising people to set themselves up for a scam.  Now go away.

It's a collection agency in this case working for Golds gym. Which is fine and great and dandy until they ask you to pay $783 for a delinquent account that you never had. When you tell them it's not you the guy tells me well we got your number from your credit Reporting agency. I told him I knew that because I am disputing it  he says well why is it in your name. I have contacted golds gym with a file number. I have proof from the Manager of the store that the file in fact is in someone else's name and this collection agency still isn't willing to take it off my credit. They still report my name in the negative every month.  Even told him I was going to the police with identity theft and I would be pressing charges on them if they don't remove it and all he said was "okay" and hung up on me. (Got it all on video as well). If you receive a call from them do your research to make sure that it is in fact you they need. They are posting this on my credit due to the previous address they didn't even look at the name. And. Ow aren't willing to do anything this company is garbage.

Well from all those comment, I wouldn't be surprise if service providers hire those people to make there client use air time and data, which then increase each of there clients bills every month, Have you ever thought of that. how else would a scam like that be a scam. I mean the collection agency cover is very wise how wants to have a bad credit so of course we will stay on the line to get things sorted out. Not answering and letting it goes to VM and if you have VM transferring it in text message like i do, well that is data usage. Very intelligent isn't it. Just like they make you pay for data to download an app you have to pay (so you pay the app twice sort of) but also you have to pay data to use it as well, then you also have to pay for further items to actually enjoy the app fully which require usage of more data that you pay again, and on top of that, you have to download some other stuff to get ride of the f****in advertising s**t that there again use data and spend on. That one simple app at $1 that you use everyday just turned into a f***in $20 app per month and you did not realized it. WTF I mean WTF!!! Now some of you will say well just get a plan with more data. Right!! OF course why the hell didn't I think of this. A plan with more data included cost more!!! Why do you think they do that if not to control your decision of wanting more data and pay a greater price willingly. And then they bring out bigger plan that becomes the new thing and cost more because now the old plan became the normal plan that everyone has. Because its normalized now they can increase there price again. So What a big [***] good and legal scam to be a communication system provider. Guess what your governement is fine with it because the receive higher rates of taxe so its legal. in the end, WE are all a bunch of loosers.

Repeated caller, at least 3 times a week. Scammers looking for information and claiming to resolve an important financial matter. Asking for somebody named Alexander McKinnon in every message they leave me. Usually calling under an ID from the US.
