Called and said they were 'United Healthcare Coordination of Benefits'whatever that is.  They had some basic knowledge of our health ins coverage.  Proceeded to ask for details about the health of various members of the family.  My impression is they would use the information to possibly deny claims or sell the info to someone who would.  Had to hang-up.

I received a voice mail message and when I returned the call to 866-793-9371 xt 66125,"Margie" said she was checking on coordination of benefits for United Health Care and needed my social security number. When I declined to give it, and advised she would have to contact our Office Administrator, she knew her name and DID call her. When I called United Health Care, they advised they only ask for a Social Security number when a subscriber doesn't know their plan ID number.

This is truly United Healthcares Coordination of Benefits department. I work for them now. You never have to give you social but it is asked if you dont know your Id number. As concerning Max's note from above, we do not sell your information as we are calling FROM your insurance company. We coordinate your UHC coverage with any other insurance the member may have.

If they are legit, as you claim, why does their caller id come up as "unavailable?"

Actually, it should come up as Minnesota because that is where our headquarters are located. Coordination of Benefits is done from 2 locations, Maryland and Connecticut.

Actually, it is a members responsibility to advise whether they or anyone on their plan has any other health insurance (which most people don't do). If it is found out after a claim is paid, the insurance company has the right to take the money back from the provider, who will recoup from the member, leaving the member with the bill.
It is easier to process claims the first time around with the correct info then start denying claims for lack on info.

Bottom line: call the member services number on the back of the card and give them your other insurance info.

This is ligitimate. We were United Healthcare, now under Optum which provides services for United Healthcare.  We coordinate benefits between other commercial insurance and Medicare for all of our United Healthcare employer groups.  If we're calling to obtain OI (other insurance) info, is because there has been an indication on a claim that you may have other insurance.  If we call you, it is because the claim did not provide full or correct OI information.  We then call the other insurance to make sure benefits are coordinated correctly.  For example, if you have UHC and your SP has BCBS and you both cover one another on your plan, we call BCBS and determine which insurance pays first and second when a claim comes in.  If we call requesting your SSN/Medicare #, is so we can coordinate with Federal Medicare as to who pays first and second.  We call all members who are Medicare age that we do not currently have their Medicare Number, or are unable to find Medicare under their SSN.  Some members are also disability or ESRD entitled.  If a code on a claim indicates you may have one of these, we also call to verify.  In some cases, yes, we have your SSN, but sometimes your actual Medicare number may not be under your SSN, therefore we call to confirm if you have Medicare.  We also call groups to verify employee work status and group size.  These factors determine whether Medicare is primary or secondary.

Coordination of benefits is not to deny or delay claims. It is very important when a family has more than one insurance carrier/payor. They are trying to determine who/which plan would be primary for children that are on both plans. Both plans cannot pay as the primary payor; there must be a secondary payor and there are rules to determine primacy. It's NOT a scam.

Other respondents have said that this is United Health Care.  Probably so.  They use their toll free lines for all kinds of purposes, including collections.  Here, we don't take or return calls when the caller is not specifically identified nor when they leave no message.  These folks don't use an identifying ID and they don't leave messages when they are trying  to collect money.  Sooo, I've never actually spoken with them, nor do I intend to.

Got a call from United HealthCare Coordination of Benefits. She knew that we had recently had a claim have trouble because of a possible double insured situation. I didn't give her any information other than to tell her we don't have any other insurance and she didn't ask for any other information. If you get a call from them and they ask for more personal details (SSN, address, medical history, etc), I would have them verify by providing you some information that no one else would have or some other way. In my case she didn't ask for anything I wouldn't mind anyone knowing about.

I received a voice-mail from this number.  The person identified as being from the benefits coordination department with United Health Care. She left her number & extension, requesting a call back.  I was suspicious, so I called the number on the back of my insurance card & asked for the aforementioned department.  The person with whom I spoke at United Health Care confirmed that this was an illegitimate number calling me & there is no reason United Health Care would need to call me for benefits coordination at this time.  He also stated that this has been an ongoing issue as some individuals are misrepresenting themselves as working for United Health Care.  If in doubt, I'd suggest calling a reliable number to confirm.

If you're suspicious, please call the number on the back of your card and tell the customer service rep that you recieved a call from a representative in Coordination of Benefits and ask them to do a warm transfer so that you may hear the interaction between the two reps. You will see that it is 100% legitimate. We do not use the information you provide for anything except determining who pays primary on your claims

Also, you will recieve the full extent of your benefits regardless of who see the claim first. If you don't provide the information that we request in a timely manner, and we later find that you have other insurance which should have paid,  there is a chance that the company could recoup the money paid on your claims and that you could be left holding the bill. When in doubt, just call customer service with the name and extension of the person who called and allow the rep to transfer you.

This is a legitimate number.  (I was suspicious because I received an email telling me to call and I hadn't heard of Optum before.)

The representative knew exactly who my employer was, who was on my policy, etc. and only asked about whether there were secondary insurance.

I received a voice mail message from this number by a guy with a Mideastern accent asking for information on a questionable medical claim. I called the number on the back of my UHC card as recommended and tried to talk to a machine. That was an exercise in futility. So, if "OPTUM", as the guy said he's with, really wants to get in touch me they'll have to do it by snail mail.

Please learn to spell 'legitimate.' While Optum itself may be a legitimate company, unwarranted COB inquiries from unverifiable sources claiming to be Optum is not only questionable, it could place your personally identifiable information at risk. Call UnitedHealthcare directly or contact them through the myUHC portal. I would not knowingly share your information with third-parties who claim an affiliation.

If your personally identifiable information was compromised to a third-party CLAIMING to be Optum, they would have some of this information and would confirm its veracity. This is how a confidence trick works. Said representative could, in turn, use it for marketing, or for far more nefarious purposes. It would be best to contact UnitedHealthcare directly or use the myUHC portal.
