    Just got a voicemail from "UNKNOWN"  The person was very polite, unlike most other scam calls that you get, gave me a File # and told me I had only a few days to call back before I would be delivered papers to either my home or office, and that if delivered would be the "next level" of the so-called company that I owe trying to collect.

    What's even better is the voicemail cut in and out like they were calling on a cell phone, so I didn't even get the whole number in my message.  I was directed here by searching for the last 7 digits that I could make out.

    No company name or information on who's trying to collect.

    The message ended with "You have been officially notified."

    Received a called stating their name was Nicole Smith and that I need to contact them immediately and even had a case file #.  This is like the third time I received a call like this.  One time the number they were calling from was our local sheriffs office.  When I called back and spoke with the deputy, they informed me that there are programs for phones so that you can put any number you want to show up on the receivers phone.  They are trying to scare you.  They then called me back and said their phone number has changed and to call the new number.  I had the deputy call them, do not think I will hear from them again.

    I received a call from Taylor WAshington at work.  I told her I was not available and she asked to leave a message.  THe message was to call the 866-840-5741 and she gave a reference number but she said she was going to be serving some civil documents if I didn't call this number and take care of it.  THis is not the first time I have gotten these calls!  I get one at least once a week! If not everyday!  I am very tired of it but the good thing is I never gave them any money and I always take down the number and google it and it up comes up on a scam page!  What is this world coming to?  And there is nothing that can be done about it?  It is really frustrating that they bother me at work to.

    Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

    I received several calls in the past week from a Stacy Davis who claims to be a process server enroute to my place of employment she left 866-840-5741 as a call back number with a case number. I called the number and got Progressive Law Firm who had my case and if I wanted to pay $400 we could avoid all this. They wouldn't tell me who the original creditor was or give me any information. Today i get a call from a Taylor Washington, yet another process server enroute to my place of employment. This time I was given 855-885-7573 as a call back number and a different case number. I didn't call this number this time because it appears to be a huge SCAM. Although they did call my Human Resources department and told them they'd be there within the hour to serve me with papers and that someone from HR would need to witness. That was fun. Needless to say no one ever showed up and it was just embarrassing. This all started happening when I looked online for student loans.

    I also received a call from a blocked number.  It was Leslie, a process server for a 3rd party.  She claimed not to know who the 3rd party was or what it was about "because it's your personal business". She also said she had a sealed envelope to deliver to me in the next few days.  If I want to know what it's about, I need to contact 855-885-7573 and give them the reference # that she gave me.

    This is the 6th collection agency that I've had contact me since the beginning of December.  Each time I am able to connect an address to the phone number that I'm given, or a company name, I send a letter to them requiring them to validate the debt.  None have been able to do it, they stop contacting me, then within weeks a new one tries.  It's frustrating and total harassment.  Yes, it's illegal and yes, they continue to do it because all they have to do is change their business name and get a new toll-free number and they're at it again.

    My husband received the same phone call from Crystal Green claiming he owed money for a subscription to a magazine for an unknown company, she could not provide a statement or an address. The whole phone call had scam written all over it. So I called the young lady back informed her that I knew who she was and promised her that she ever called my husband again that I would have police escort her out of her home on the news. :-D Won't be hearing from that dumb [***] any more. BTW the phone number she called from was 1-855-861-2258.
