Okay, I had the same thing, and I didn't really notice anything on my statements untill last week. I went to BoA right away and found this out:

Smart Step is an protection insurance plan that was offered through BoA, to their customers. They called people, told you that you could try it for free for one month, see if you liked it and if you did (and didn't cancel after the one month), they would automatically take $20 per adult in the household off your account (in my case $40 per month).
Anyway, they were also supposed to send me papers with the rules and regulations and all that. If I did... I can't remember. I DO Remember getting the call, but a few days later our house burned down, our lives were a mess and I haven't seen any of the papers.
So, back to BoA, last week. I talked to a representative at our location and she called Smart Step right away. No problem getting connected! I talked to the guy on the other line and he told me why and how and all that. In the mean time, the lady at the bank went back into our account for 6 months (so why someone says they can only go back for 60 days.... even through online banking you have up to 18 months!!!). I talked to the guy, made him send the papers again to our new address and I got those a few days ago. All I have to do now is to decide whether I should keep this plan or not.
It basically pays only UP TO $100.000 per insured member, in case of an accidental death (with ofcourse all the cases it won't apply to).

That's, in short, how it is and how it works. So if you still need to take action and want to cancel or get papers send to you: go to your bank and let someone from them call! That way you can be sure you'll get someone on the phone :-)

    Good luck to you all!

for all u idiots complaining here, that company records ever conversation for the sale, and will even gladly send u a tape of u clealy accpeting the policy. u can lie and pretend all u want, but u will not get your money back. call the number and ask them to send u a tape, they sent one for me. if they really did take money without ur permission they wouldn't be a company anymore

what they do is call BOA customers and offer to enroll them for this smart step insurance for 2 months free. they tell u they will send a package and after u review it and dont want it, just cancel it before u get charged. i had completly forgotten that i had enrolled for this and after 6 monthes of paying $40 i finally noticed. they guy i talked to on the phone from smart step was actually really helpful, even after i bit his head off when i got denied a refund. but they sent me a tape recording of when i talked to the telemarketer and foolishly accepted. if u pay attention they explain everything

O.K so, so far I think this is a charge from an affiliate of BOA. They call and want to sign you up for a "free" trail offer for life insurance. My husband told them to send the info. I couldn't find a number on the paper work they sent. so i had to google it and came up with other numbers to the same company and FINALLY got through  to someone wasn't very helpful. I had to call my husband at work to cancel the policy. I told them emphatically I didn't want to recieve any more solicitations from them and was very upset with the service. And I still recieved a charge. I filed a claim with BOA. Hopefully that will get the 40 back and I plan on talking to them about keeping AIG as a affiliate it is poor business skills on AIG's part. Hope this helps. I had to vent too. :-)

Same thing here folks, they've been taking 20.00 out of my Debit account since may last year without my knowledge. I filled a fraud claim today hoping to have my 240.00 back from these pure thieves! They got all my information without me authorizing them to do so. The BOA told me they could only get the last 60days money back, but I refused to accept it. What other steps should I do in order to get my money back? Take them to court as well as bank? Police? I don't know what to do and feel powerless, but I shall fight for it.

This happened to me as well and BOFA should be put liable to all these. Infact when i asked them to stop the payment they replied saying that they should change $38.00 to stop the payment and they can only stop when the merchant amount matches with the stop payment amount which i think is rediculous.
I strongly beleive that BOFA knew about this and not taking any action which tells me that BOFA is getting favoured.

I can see by these posts that I have been missing NOTHING, since I closed my account with BOA almost two years ago.

Among other things, their incompetent teller deposited money into the WRONG account, then exacerbated the problem by charging me a $28.00 transfer fee to put it into the RIGHT account...causing checks to bounce right and left. I spent over FOUR hours on the phone arguing with a supervisor, before she finally relented and rescinded the overdraft fees. But, I never got back the $28.00 they charged me for THEIR error...or an apology. "That's OUR policy", she arrogantly informed me. And, when I tried to file a formal complaint against the teller who caused the problem to BEGIN with, they DELIBERATELY sent me the wrong form!

Right after I discovered this website, I found out that I had been receiving ILLEGAL telemarketing calls from BOA from this and many other numbers...for MONTHS after I had closed my account (I NEVER answer -800 numbers). If I had known then what I now know, I would have JOYFULLY reported them to the FCC for violation of the "Do Not Call" Registry.

All of you here who are being ripped off by these FACELESS bureaucrats have my DEEPEST sympathies. I HATE them with a purple passion!

Just found $40 taken from my BOA account also.  This business is affiliated somehow with BOA and they call you to get disability insurance started over the phone. I just found my husband spoke to them and thought he was getting this as a free trial offer.  The thing is you have to call to cancel. I just tried but they didn't cancel for me, and I need my husband to call since they initially spoke with him.
Find out who else is connected with your BOA account. They will need to call to cancel this.
I believe this business will cancel easily enough but don't expect to get any money back.

Same thing with me.  They called me, I ignorantly accepted the "free trial" package.  Then they called back to see if I wanted to go past the free trial period, but I told them I was not interested.  I thought that was the end of it, but they've been charging me $20.00 a month since March.  Aka, I've lost $60.00.  But hey, my sister TOLD me that Bank of America was good and that having two bank accounts was a good idea (I already had a previous bank account at somewhere I was satisfied with).

Give me back my money Smart Step.
