I got a hold of someone at the company and they said they talked to me three months ago. Only thing is the number they gave doesn't belong to me, but someone else with the same last name. They are sending 'proof of enrollment' in the next 7 to 10 business days. Although it will be someone elses voice on the recording. I went through the claims department at BofA and will have to fill out several forms. This caused several fee's as the account that was signed up is never used and had a low balance.

Called my work wanting to send me information on $20/month insurance, said they were from BofA... and gave me a customer service phone number.  I came here to check it out, lo and behold, a scam... and I called their number, they answered "Bank of America", said they couldn't cancel my account (I have an account?!) and that there was no number that I could call to cancel.  Told me I have to wait for them to call *me* in order to cancel... I called BofA and put a block on my account... now I have a checking account but I can't write checks or use a check card or atms... I'm switching banks first thing on pay day

    Violated bank customer
866-879-0179 "National Union Fire Insurance Company"  I have received calls repeatedly from this shady company- always the number is blocked.  The caller usually hangs up on me when I ask who they are and what their company name & number is- but now I actually got a response this last call.  I am on the Do Not Call Registry and have filed a complaint there.  I have also called Bank of America customer service to make it clear this is NOT a service to their customers & to review the shady companies they are allowing to contact their customers.

    Violated Bank of America Customer
866-879-0179 I just called the number and was answered with "Hello & thank you for being a Bank of America customer"... When asked I was told, no this is not Bank of America, but rather "Intersections Insurance" but I was assured they are affiliated with Bank of America.

The Smart Step Plan is really pretty confusing - here's how it works. BOA sends lists of their customer's calling and mailing info to a company called Intersections Insurance Services. Intersections then hires third party calling companies (telemarketers) to call people on these lists and try to sell the SmartStep Plan to them. They offer it for free for 30 days (even though you're not actually covered by the insurance for the first 30 days), and then after that you pay $20/month for $100,000 of "accidental death insurance", except there's a ton of exclusions, so they rarely if ever pay out on the insurance. If you agree to the 30 day trial, they rattle off a ton of info to you about how you are agreeing to pay 20/month and share your info with Intersections, Inc, etc. The actual insurance plan is underwritten by AIG and the National Union Fire Insurance Company. They make it extremely difficult to actually cancel the plan, and many of the customers who attempt to cancel end up closing their accounts with BOA because of this.

Just got the call today.  The first guy was very friendly, he said he was from BoA, and repeated my address to me.  After that I was really surprised.  I had no idea what the service was, but I think I seemed skeptical enough over the phone through asking him numerous questions.  The first guy got the phone over to the second person to "confirm" my information.  I straight up said to her "Look, the first guy was really nice, but I really can't afford this.  Can you just take me off the list right now?"  And she said "Thank you for your time, goodbye."  Could this possibly be misconstrued as accepting the service?  Should I call back to cancel or have my name removed from the list?

    Me freakin too!

I DO remember getting a call back in October about this.  I DID agree for them to send me a package about this life insurance bullcrap... I did NOT agree for them to charge my account.  I NEVER received any sort of package or letter stating polices or cancellations.  I just discovered two $20 charges in my checking account today.

I called 1-866-897-0179 to ask about the charges and the guy "Agustus" asked me to verify my info and all that.  He said I agreed to this and he would send me a copy of my phone agreement.  I said I wanted to cancel and he said I have to wait to get the [***] in the mail THEN i can cancel if I feel it is not needed.  WTF.  I am not interested in getting life insurance and I told him that.  NO HELP AT ALL!  SCAM!

    Help !!!
I got the same problem. They charged me $20 dollars without my agreement. I canceled my account and I did not want to contact that "insurance" company because I did not want to provide any futher insurance. Is my cancellation decision the good way ? Will have I any problem later? I am very upset with BOA because I have been their customer for long time. Have anyone in here been able to get back $20 dollars from "insurance" company?
It should be called the "Stealer" company.

None of these telemarketers are "from BofA".  They are either employed by  Chartered Marketing, part of Intersections Insurance, which has a marketing agreement with BofA, or by some other subcontracted telemarketer.  They have been doing this for years.

Since BofA has already provided them with all the information they need to charge your account, all they want is some recording they can claim is your "authorization" to start charging.  Regardless of what you say, they are only a click away from charging your account every month, and they can keep doing it until you catch it and figure out how to stop them.

When you were passed off to a second person to "confirm your information", that was the point they were getting ready to fabricate their claim that you "agreed" to be charged, for some "insurance" they evidently failed to even fully disclose to you up front.  They want to get you into a pattern of responding in agreement to verifications of your "information", either to use excerpts of your "yes" statements as agreement, or to tack on in the middle or end of the "verification" some line they can later claim indicates you are "agreeing" to be charged.

They would not bother to "confirm" anything if they weren't going to charge you.  They aren't just BofA employees updating your mailing address.

That is pretty typical of their telemarketing tactics.  "Mr. Nice" kept you on the line long enough to set you up to maybe say what they wanted in their "recorded authorization".  "Number 2" (the "confirmer") either sized up the situation and decided not to go for it, or you may find charges on your account anyway in about a month, after the "30 day free trial" (and cancellation period) has run out.

If you do find charges, expect that they will claim they have a recording of you "agreeing" to the charges, which they may or may not provide to you if you request, and expect that they will also claim they sent you an "information packet" that would disclose how to cancel without being charged.  Don't expect to actually receive an information packet.  That appears to exist primarily to make you believe that you COULD have cancelled without being charged, so they can keep your money, SINCE IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT FOR NOT CANCELLING IN TIME.

If you find their charges on your account, expect BofA to claim it is just a "billing dispute" and try to transfer you back to the telemarketers.  They may then claim you "agreed" to the charges, try to sell you again, claim they have to "investigate" etc, so they can keep your money and keep charging you as long as possible.

Contact BofA to "opt-out" of ALL sharing of your information with both BofA and outside marketing affiliates, under the Privacy provisions of the GLB Act.  If you see unauthorized charges, dispute them to BofA IN WRITING, and close the account due to fraud.  Contact the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, at www.occ.gov, should you have any problems getting your money back.
