- Alfalfa replies to ME SmithHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

- OverthehudsonI keep getting robocalls from this number about pre-legal action. I need to know if this is some type of scam or if there is something. I am making payment on an outstanding debt but can't see why they would take it further if payments are being made.

- Notthedroids TheyarelookingforI got the same " pre-legal matter" script. It's a scare tactic. These companies buy and resell old debt (most of these debts will be re-sold many times) and in most cases the original owner (usually a credit card company) hasn't given them any documentation. So ask for it. If they take you to court: go. They are betting that you won't show up and they will automatically win. Show up and ask to see the evidence. They will drop the case because the don't have any. A story just like this was featured on This American Life the other week. The debt collection company's lawyer was super aggressive right up until the judge asked, "do you have any documentation?"

- Willis| 1 replyScam call which comes nearly every day despite my number being on the DNC list. Ask for a person who's name is unintelligible to me, and asks me to call a number. I called once and no one answered; another time, a person answered and I demanded the calls stop. They have not. I wish I could find out who this is because they would be facing a lawsuit.

- Concerned person replies to Angel| 4 repliesI too have the north east collection bureau calling me doing the same actions to me . Report them to your state attorney general office and the fair debt collection practices. You can actually sue them if they are found out to be wrong in their claim. As (them to send you proof that you signed a contract with them stating you owe them money. They are looking at old medical records of people and trying to collect on them they cannot collect because they do not have the info they claim to have....and DO NOT MAKE ANY VERBAL AGREEMENTS WITH THEM ON THE PHONE such as: i will be able to make a $25 or $50 payment because thats you making an verbal agreement with them and they can actually take you to court on that and force you to pay. I hope this was helpful to you.
- Concerned person replies to Concerned person| 3 repliesI did research and found out that Northeast collection bureau is a scam agency trying to collect money from people on old medical records they found or gotten ahold of.
- Dorothy from brooklyn ny| 1 replyI have been receiving annoying and harrassing phone calls from this agency by a man named Nathan Russo who states he is with this agency. Mr Russo stated that i owed a bill fron 8/22/2013 from a hospital visit. I asked him to send me proof that i signed or agreed in a contract that i have with his agency stating that i owed this bill, he then became rude with me using profanity in a loud and boisterious tone and then he began to threaten me with putting this on my credit report and extracting the monies from my bank acct and all other kinds of threats.i did research and found out that northeast was a scam agency trying to collect on old medical bills that they found of people. I reported them to the state attorney general and the fair debt collection practices because they went out of the federal guideline. I also found out that if they are found in error you can sue their agency for harrassment, anannoying and threatening phone calls. People do your research about them before you give any of your information over the phone. Look into the 800 notes.com and you will find an abundance of complaint on them.
