So I called and some guy with a thick accent answered and told me that they would send me the $200 for free and all I had to do was pay $9.95 on my Visa or MasterCard. When I asked then where they got my information, they hung up on me. I have a felling if I gave this guy my card number that I would have many charges that I didn't make.

My name is not Melita, however when I called my carrier (AT&T) I was told that just by opening/viewing the text I may already be subscribed.  They suggested a) joining the Do Not Call list (which I am already on), b) purchasing AT&T's $5/mo. package so that I can block certain callers, or c) changing my phone number.

I think I'll take my chances and just ignore all future messages, as I never replied or called the number provided in the message.

As a follow-up to my last post, I called AT&T and had them add the 'Purchase Blocker' to my account, so a pin has to be entered before an subscription/purchase can be made.  It's a sort of parental control feature, but makes sense for scams like this.

Just received a text from this number, same thing that has been posted, $200 walmart gift card blah blah blah.  I automatically opened the text without seeing who it was from since I was in the middle of texting my mother, but I haven't replied or anything.  I called my provider (T-Mobile) and they aren't showing any charges on my account but said to monitor my bill online and if something shows up to call them back.  I'm not sure how an SMS message works; I don't download anything on my phone but I do send music to my phone through my computer.  Would a SMS block interfere with that?  Also, am I going to be charged for just opening the text since I didn't reply?  This is the first time I have ever had to deal with something like this, so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I called AT&T to add the 'Purchase Blocker' to all my lines. AT&T is sending me a PIN to be entered before an subscription/purchase can be made via SMS. AT&T said there is a drawback - all multimedia (picture/video) messages will be blocked. It's OK with me for now as I don't really use multimedia SMS. I can manage the "Purchase Blocker" online, AT&T said. I've never seen the option so we'll see. AT&T said it would take about 90 minutes to take effect after they put the "Purchase Blocker" on.

AT&T sent this email to me after they put the Purchase Blocker on:

Well, the same thing happened to me...

I received a text saying...

Instead of using Walmart...it looks like they're onto Target now. I called the number, and when a man with an accent answered I hung up. I texted "STOP2069" and I looked up the number online and came across this forum. I reported it to the Federal Trade Commission. I called my provider (AT&T) and they assured me nothing was charged on my account. They offered me to change my phone number, but I declined. I ALSO called Target to let them know LOL

Then afterwards I called the number from the text message and asked how they got my number. They said I had filled out a survey in a mall or online. I told them I don't fill out surveys (which I don't) and that this is a scam. There was a lot of background noise and people taking phone calls. When I asked her questions she was very taken aback. She didn't know how to answer them and when I accused it of being a scam she asked me if there was proof. I told her that there better not be anything charged on my cell phone account and to take me off.

I want to know how they got my number. My name is obviously on my account/caller ID of my phone, but some of these posts are different names/numbers.

Something needs to be done about this bogus crap. Luckily, I didn't fall for it...and most of you didn't either.

I just received the same messagem except it was addressed to "Thomas."

Answering will just confirm that they sent it to a valid cell number, so I'll ignore it.

They're getting sneakier now, making you think it was a wrong number so you'll call back - DON'T DO IT!

I just got the same message for a Charlotte and it was for a $25 gift card to Target....I have no idea how they got my number because I am completely unlisted.....It's so lame....

Called them from a secure line. Someone with a heavy accent answered. I said I wanted to unsubscribe and they hung up.

Got a text from 646-327-3810 that said, "Thanks 4 visiting our site  Call 877-706-6424 to Claim your $200 Retail voucher!  Use Gift Code:  RRV200.  2end reply stop."

Texted them back saying I will contact the FCC and report them if they do not stop texting/calling me.  I received similar type texts about 4 months back.  How do they get our numbers even though we may be on Do Not Call List?

Pretty sure its a scam. I called and she wanted my credit card information to pay shippibg and handling to gave the voucher sent out. I was like well what id the voucher. She said she wasn't suposed to guve ibnformation on that and said it included further instructions."so I cant use it right away?"...she said it had something to do with saving receipts and getting the money that was already mine.
