- not Michael| 3 repliesAnybody who gave a card number to these folks needs to cancel that card. Do it now. The scammers are probably already charging stuff to your number.
Work with your card issuer. It might be possible to get at least some of your money back. And in the future NEVER give personal information to anyone who calls you. - Bullfrog| 1 replyMy downstairs office phone rang on April 14th, 2010 at or around 7PM, PDT (no caller ID on that phone.) The caller claimed to be calling from American Auto Services and said his name was Jonathan Wilson, employee number 1072. I highly doubt that was his real name, given his heavy Asian accent, though I could of course be wrong about that. He said I had been selected to receive a $200 card valid at local gas stations. He said he was calling from Phoenix, AZ. I asked for his website address. He said it was www.americanautoservice.com. There is no such an address, but www.americanautoservices.com it links to an apparently-valid company in South Pasadena, CA. "Jonathan" was rude and insistent, and said he would not charge me for anything right away but would charge bill me for $3.90 after my card arrived. But he wanted me to give him my credit card number right away. When I balked, he claimed that without the three-digit security number, which he never asked for, he could not charge me anyway. For some reason, I believed him and gave him my credit card number, even though he accidentally changed his spiel from "gas card" to "grocery card" a couple of times. Then he said — well, he did hand me off to another loud, rude person at some point — that the transaction would be complete after I would listen to three advertisements, with instructions to simply say "yes" at the end of each one, emphasizing that saying yes indicated merely that I had listened to them, and not that I had committed to anything. He gave me a twelve-digit transaction number. The second advertisement, voiced by a pleasant-but-serious recorded female, clearly said that replying "yes" would in fact enroll me in some sort of membership involving ongoing fees. I said "No." This seemed to create confusion, and I heard nothing for about 15 seconds. Finally, I hung up. I was called back and asked why I hung up. I told them I believed they had lied about the implications of responding to the phone ads. They said that I had misunderstood. I told them I was done with them, asked them not to call me back, and hung up the phone. The whole thing took about 30 minutes and sounded very shady.
On April 15, 2010, at 6:35PM, I received an email from my credit card company reporting a suspicious charge, and asking me to call them immediately. I did. I was told that $3.90 had indeed been charged to me credit card in the preceding half hour. When I asked for the name of the company that rang up the charge they said it was Dante Marketing, with a phone number of 877-472-3388. I immediately canceled the credit card involved. I called the number and got another man who gave yet another name (I couldn't decipher) for the company I had called, claiming to be in Seminole FL. I asked him if I had called American Auto Services and he said yes. I asked him if I had called Dante Marketing and he said yes. But he said he knew nothing about a Phoenix connection, but said they worked with many marketing organizations. I told him I knew he was part of a scam and then hung up.- Caller: Dante Marketing, representing themselves as American Auto Services
