I had bought a new prepaid trakfone with an unlisted number a few months ago.   No one had my phone number except my sister. A week after I bought the cell phone these same people started to leave messages on my phone.  I thought it was unusual not only because I owe nothing to nobody but wondered how in the world did they got my unlisted number in the first place??? They did not mention me by name in the message they left which is also quite strange.  The only thing I could think of was maybe they were trying to contact the person who previously owned the phone number before me...so I called my cell phone company and had my number changed.  A week after I changed the number to another unlisted number to my surprise these same people tried to contact me again on the new phone number!!!  I have no idea how they could have gotten my new unlisted phone number a second time! Again, no one outside my family has my number. The only thing I can think of is that they had somehow gained access to the cell phone company's records and are spamming everyone who buys new trakfones.  With a trakfone they do not do any credit checks, so a lot of people with bad credit get trakfones.  However, I have great credit, owe nothing to nobody and the only reason I got the trakfone was because there is no contract involved.  So it leads me to think they are spamming everyone who has prepaid cell phones. I think how this scam works is that they first gain access to the prepaid cell phone number data base.  Then they call you without even knowing your name. Then once you call them back...they ask for your name...then from there they do a quick credit check on you...then they tell you that you owe money...Then they try to collect...So, I wonder how many of you may have bought a cell phone...especially a prepaid phone?  I also wonder if it is legal for the cell phone company to give out their new customer's unlisted phone numbers to a third party?  I wonder if it is legal for collection agencies to spam everyone just because they bought prepaid phones?  Prejudice and harassment seems to be involved here.  Is it legal for them to be phishing for information?  On top of all this you would think they would be held accountable for eating up on my cell phone minutes, harassment, threatening,stalking, obtaining phone numbers illegally, spamming, and a bunch of other crazy stuff listed in this forum.  There must be some kind of laws protecting us from them...if there aren't any laws protecting are privacy from creeps like them...there should be!

I agree Jessica...these rude people may be phishing for the phone numbers and either illegally obtaining them from the prepaid cell phone company or from someone who is hacking into "phone company switching carriers computers".  "Phone company switching carriers" are used when your phone company switches the call in route using a different carrier.  This other carrier gets to see your phone number.  Some of these smaller carriers seem a bit shady as they gain their profits from scamming the bigger carriers through loopholes in the law.  There may be hackers who work for and/or have access to these so called "phone company switching carriers" and gets your number and then farms them out to this so called "collection agency" phishing for your info.  This is definitely illegal! You can sue them! There maybe a link you all have in common.  Has anyone called a number and their phone company used a "switching carrier"?

Thanks for the good info Jessica and Phil.  So, first they get a bunch of phone numbers in bulk either by hacking phone switching carriers and/or prepaid cell phone carriers.  Then they massively spam...calling each number up using recorded messages telling you to call them back on this "toll-free" number.   These scam artists want you to call them back on a "toll free number".  So it does not matter if you use *67 to hide your name and number because they will still get it...because it is a "toll-free number". When you call them up on this "toll free" number they have a chance to identify who you are by their caller id.   Once they have your name they can get gain access to your credit info by using their computers. For those of you smart enough to use other people's phones to call this toll free number back up...these scam artists may still try to phish for your identity by asking you questions.  They are mainly looking for your name.  Do you notice on each of their calls that first go out to you that they do not use your name in their messages?  This is because they do not have it.  For those of you getting anonymous calls from these scam artists....
under FCC rules, telemarketers/collection agencies are required to transmit Caller ID information and are prohibited from blocking such information. Also, FCC rules limit parties that own toll-free numbers from distributing the numbers identified through ANI. The way they obtained the phone numbers may have been illegal, massively spamming may have been illegal, hacking and harassment is illegal.  These scam artists seemed to have violated several laws and I agree with you Phil that a law suit should be brought forth.

Same as many above. Mr Stanley left a robot, threatening voice mail. I too am on a don not call list!

Mr Stanley called me on Saturday, November 6, 2010, telling me it is imperative I return his call to begin the assessment process.  No company name was given, they did not address us with our name nor tell me what they were calling about.

these scumbags are junk debt collectors, they purchase bad debt even though it isnt owed anymore and they turn it into anew debt  regent associates is one of them. i called ftc and the atty. general and im giving them all the info i can get.i found the scumbags can  spoof their number so it will show someone elses number.i am not in debt now but about 8 years ago i was but i eventialy i got it all paid but i am getting harrassed by the 877 number they are still scammers anybody that is getting these calls hasnt done any thing wrong,so fight the s.o.bs.

They called my house two Sundays in a row. So I have taken the time out of my day to use my home phone and my cell phone, depending on where I am to make calls to their company.

IT rings once, then operator says "Please hold while you're being connected"

Then someone answers instantly...

At this point, I claim to be Michael Jordan, owner of Rocky Road Ice Cream Delivery CO. I explain to them how a Mr Stan Lowe has taken a personal account with my company and after several weeks of on time payments and deliveries from my company, his account is now in suspension due to late payment. They always put me on hold and either transfer me to a manager/ supervisor, as I continue to harass them, or they go speak to him and they come back nerved of these now confirmed false aligations.

Either way, it's a pleasing sense knowing that you've waistted their time and pissed several of the "assistants" off.

Do not cooperate, call them back. Try to sell them things, lie, phib, give them a hard time, pretend, make believe different situations and have a good time with it. The phone calls have stopped and I still make effort to call them multiple times each day.

Ah... A great feeling knowing they're feeling what they dish.

Thanks for the great info Shell.  They bought old debt which has already been paid, but regardless they turned it into new debt and are trying to collect on it.  Sounds like a scam, harassment, invasion of privacy, and more lawsuits to be filed against them. However, how they obtained Jessica's phone number seems fishy to me, also.  If they hacked into any systems they were not suppose to and used the information in an improper way...sounds like they have violated some serious state and federal laws. I would not take Tom's advice on "harassing" them back...they may try to counter sue.  I would suggest not calling them back, saving their messages and seeking an attorney and sue the pants off of them!  It would not look good for your case if you called them back and harassed them. Besides when you call them back they will have your number since it is a toll free number you are calling.  Has anyone tried to sue these people yet?

these people at that 877 number deserve whatever they get thrown at them.

i really hate them scammers and i hope they get caught . i found out something about the do not call list if you switch landline phone service you have to reregister on the  do not call list  you can call ftc about that. if you switch to comcast for phone service not only do you call rejection but you get call trace and block for any of those other long ass numbers.

I've gotten three recorded messages from this group.  Region Asset Management.  7720 West 119th Street, Overland Park, KS.

They keep asking for a Paul Barry when I return the call.

Supposedly I won't receive any more calls by Friday.

I just got off the phone with these people.  Same man by the name of Stan Lowe contacted me on my business cell.  He was threatening to levy my accounts if I did not contact him.  I called them and they said they were looking for my boss who has had the same cell number for over 15 years.  He called them. A lady by the name of MINDY JENKINS spoke with him.  She asked if his name was blah blah and he said yes.  She asked if his last 4 digits of SS# was 4905. He said no. She said I guess your not our guy.  He asked if this is a fraud and she swore up and down that it was legit.  People like this irritate the hell out of me.  Seriously... Get a job and quit taking innocent people's HARD earned money.

Her ext. she gave me was 1220!! Same crap as above.  These people need to be stopped.

I would agree with you however, there is nothing listed on this company on the internet.  Not a company profile or anything.  However, when I looked them up I found all of these complaints on the same man, Stan Lowe.  Regions Asset Management.  Not sure what company you were called from but that is the company that called me.  I spoke with a very nice lady by the name of MINDY JENKINS.  She was nice but conveniently had  the wrong person when my uncle called back and asked about the company, what they did and asked if they were trying to scam somebody.

They call all the time. I called them back a few times and they even confirmed it wasn't me that they were looking for (they provided the last four of a social security number) and they would take me off their list. Then a few weeks later the calls start up again.  And I've gotten the call from the infamous Mr. Freeman to call back by 6pm or else. The other people I've talked to have been polite, but the calls don't stop even though they say they will and they have no record of me talking to them before. The calls rotate between Regent Asset Management, Accounts Receivable Mgmt, and Professional Recovery Svcs. Once I call and talk to one, they stop calling and then the next one starts and it just goes round among those three. I did file a complaint to the Texas Attorney General today since I have started keeping track of when each of them calls and when I talk to them, since each time they say they will stop calling and never do. I also found out it is for some kind of Bank of America credit card debt (not mine since I've never had a B of A card and its not my social security number). I called B of A but they said there wasn't anything they could do about it. They did say they use three companies for collections.

Also, isn't it required that callers state that they are trying to collect a debt and who they are collecting it for? I've been getting these calls for months now and whenever I answer, I've been hung up on, so they only conveniently leave a message when it goes to voicemail (which is very fishy). I've also noticed lately that I've been getting a lot of collection (or possibly scam) calls for people who are friends-of-friends whom I've never met or who live in other states.
