Called asking for money the California Highway Patrol 11-99 foundation (which doesn't do phone solicitations of ANY kind). Interesting. Since I am a CHP Officer, I went along with the gig... knowing damn well it was a fraud. They asked for my name, my address, and my phone number, all correct (to the CHP, and my Office, and our main scam number that an officer answers, except a fake name we use to catch scammers). We've gotten about 30+ calls thus far, and pretty soon we will be have a warrant served on this scam organization and shutting them down and a HUGE FCC fine will be coming there way. Plus a lawsuit will follow from the State of California against this organization. REALLY stupid move on their part to call ME on MY cell phone.

I've started picking up and laying the receiver down when I get a toll-free number call. It's not toll-free for them when someone answers, and I figure if it starts costing them money, maybe they'll quit calling. If nothing else, it stops the ringing.

I don't even bother to talk to them. If it's important, they can leave a message on those occasions when the machine picks up. These bums never do.

When I'm home, I'll pick up on unknown calls and set the receiver down, just to stop the ringing. Besides, I figure it costs them nothing if no one answers, but they're probably billed for the call if someone does. If enough of us adopt that strategy, maybe we can shut down some of this crap.

The called very early (before 8am) and I answered after the 2nd ring. I said "Hello, Hello" but they never spoke, just a wooshing sound on the other end. Who is this?

simply put a message on your answering machine like this; " All calls to this number are screened and this line does not accept 800 series calls" These people are all crooks including the one's that say they are police related. Simply do not try to talk to them just hang up on them. Tough luck if they are cops or firefighters they should know better. They are frauds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My machine picks up and immediately informs ALL callers that we do NOT accept charity calls, advertising calls, political calls, telemarketing calls, survey calls, "blocked" or "area code blocked" calls, or "unknown" calls.

I am so tired of all these fools who manage to legally evade the Do Not Call lists. NOBODY should be exempt.

This number 877-749-7846 calls me all the time.  What can I do to stop it.  I just hit listen and off at about the same time.  They call right back and I do the same thing.
    Thanks.

I receive several calls from this number each day.  How can I identify the company and stop the calls?

I would appreciate their courtesy in not continuing to call when I have asked them not to do so.

Caller called at 8:48 AM EST, 19 December 2008. Ask for my grandmother. Assumed that I was my (deceased) grandfather. When I explained that I was the grandson, the caller said that he was a fund raiser and ended the call quickly.

They have called us several times; sometimes we say hello a few times and they hang up, sometimes they ask for some bogus name (last time: Normandy).  Last time it sounded like there was a party going on in the background.  They have never asked us for anything and barely ever speak.

The first time I got calls from this number was about 2 years ago, wanting donations to some Firefighters foundation. Told them I don't send any money over the phone and to please send me the info through the mail. They did - I donated $20. They left me alone till last year, where they reminded me that it's now a new year and to please donate again, but please more this time. Got it in writing again, and sent them the same amount. They have started calling again but I haven't been home to answer, and they don't leave messages. They call a few times a day, and I now realize (reading all these replies) that it's probably not legit. Glad I checked in here.

I live in southern ME. Rec'd call from this # today, the man asked for my husband. My husband died 3 weeks ago, and I told him that. But he had no respect and kept talking. He said he was from the "Maine State Federation of Firefighters" and for what amount could he put me down for, and I'd get a sticker showing my support. What really made my blood boil is that even when I reiterated that my husband JUST DIED he kept on pushing me for money! No REAL man would do that to a grieving widow!  btw my husband had been a FF/EMT-I.
After I slammed the phone down, I realized something - if he was calling from Maine, why did he have such a marked SOUTHERN ACCENT??? I'm going to forward what I found out here to the Chief right away.

Calls daily, including Sundays, sometimes twice or more daily

A prime reason to screen ALL calls

We're up to something like 10-12 calls daily. WHile screening the calls, once the ID appears ("Toll free call"), I've briefly hit the phone's "talk" button as if I planned to answer the call, then immediately disconnected. These USELESS FOOLS have something that works just like instant redial. After they hit call #7 (and this has only been since I came home from work), I actually did "answer". I told them, very clearly, to take our number off their calling list.

I can't wait until this kind of calling becomes illegal!
