I recieved an email to call that number from MyCheckFree.  I'm glad I googled the number and saw it was a phishing scheme.  I use MyCheckFree to pay my gas/electric bill.  it also gave this number to call 800-564-9184 and to choose option 1.

I also called the 1st number curious to see what it would say, and a real live person does answer the phone eventually after about 30 seconds or so.  But they make it sound like the recording is missing the first few words so you think it's just a little off.  She does say it's MyFreeChecking but I hung up after that.

MyCheckFree isn't a scam....I have used them before many months back.  It seems like a they have been hijacked and spoofed (just like PayPal)and the link was trying to phish more info from people.  Just beware.  PS, already contacted their customer service

    Katie,

If you stayed on the line with them then they would have given you a website download your software from.  the website is legit it's a us.mcafee.com website.

I suggest everyone check their records and if they had actually paid bills on that day... like i did... they call in.  I agree they do a really bad job of sounding legit.  But i have McAfee and hopefully the scan will show that i don't have the malicious software they're talking about.

Actually it IS a valid email from MyCheckFree.  I called and got a code for McAfee software.  Call McAfee's toll-free number and you will hear about the MyCheckFree issue as an option on their menu.  MyCheckFree sent the email to all customers who COULD have accessed their bill payer at the time stated.  They ASK if you fit the four questions and IF you do, then you need to call.  I called just in case I had been compromised somehow.  I'm not risking it.  Nonetheless, THIS IS REAL AND THEY ARE DOING THEIR BEST TO CONTAIN AN ACTUAL issue.  Do a little more research people!!!

    Good luck all.

On IE 6.x got to your history button. Click on "Last Week" (the 2nd was last week) and you will see all the base URL's you visited. RIGHT CLICK on the folder selecting EXPAND and individual pages will show up. RIGHT CLICK and select PROPERTIES. It will show you the last time you visited that page! (Also, it updates to the last time for that page no matter when. If you have been lately it won't help much, but it is for each page visted.)

I just got the same email. I went to checkfree's websight and they left me a message saying they were sending me the message to my regular email. 1. I'm reporting them to all my bills I use check free for.
    2. I'm NOT calling the number that was given. My Tech advisor says it is a scam and that checkfree gets a kick back from every one they refer to Mcafee for getting them to use thair service. BEWARE! THIS IS A SCAM and marketing tool. Everyone should Should sever all ties with this company.

This is a legitimate email and phone number.  The reason why they are sending it out to everyone is because there was an issue with their DNS server on that day and it made people susceptible to attack if and only if, they accessed the site on December 2, 2008.  Otherwise you do not have to worry.  I had a webchat with them and asked them for the phone number, did not explain why and they gave it to me with no problem.  It is the same.

I believe the email is a spam, promoting McAfee. I have never heard of mycheckfree before and I don't use Windows. The email came from a nondescript address ebillinfo@customercenter.net, has no indication whatsoever which company or bank it is talking about: It says "...redirected from the authentic bill payment service...", the signature is vague: BillPay Customer Service. For example Bank of America has a BillPay service and Wachovia has one, too...

    "December 10, 2008

    Customer: XXXX,XXXX

    Dear XXX XXXX,

We take great care to keep your personal information secure. As part of these ongoing efforts, we are notifying you that the computer you use for online bill payment may have been exposed to software that puts the security of your computer's contents at risk. This letter will help you determine if your computer is actually infected and advise you how to fix the problem and protect yourself against future risk.

The malicious software affects some but not all customers who accessed online bill payment on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. For a limited period of time, some customers were redirected from the authentic bill payment service to another site that may have installed malicious software. Your computer may be infected if all of the following are true:

You attempted to access online bill payment between 12:30 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. Eastern time (GMT -5) on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, and
You were using a computer with the Windows operating system, and
You reached a blank screen rather than the usual bill payment screen when you attempted to navigate to online bill payment, and
After reaching the blank screen, your computer's virus protection program did not tell you via pop-up or other messaging that malicious software was detected and quarantined.

If all four of the conditions above are true, your computer may be infected. We have partnered with McAfee®, the world's largest dedicated security technology company, to provide you with a complimentary copy of its VirusScan® Plus software which, when installed, will detect, block and remove any malicious software from your computer hard drive. Please contact us at 877-800-4864 for further instructions or 800-564-9184 (Option 1) for further instructions. We will also offer you both advice and free services that can help you mitigate any risk you may face as a result of this incident or other everyday exposures you may encounter.

CheckFree will never ask for your password via email or via phone.  If you ever receive an email requesting your password, do not respond and delete the email immediately.

We value your business and your trust, and we apologize for any inconvenience this incident has caused.

    Thank you,

    Art D'Angelo

This is most definitely a phishing scam.

Anyone here who has been posting comments suggesting that this email is real is part of the scam and trying to get you to call.

I've gotten emails with exactly the same text saying it's from BillPay and another one saying it's from CheckFree and a third saying it's from Bank of America.

Totally bogus.  Do NOT call these numbers and answer their questions.
