Claimed to be calling from 'Department of Legal Services' on behalf of 'Allied Cash Advance' and working for "Attorney, Julie Jone" and tried to collect a bogus debt for $1,100 from 2007, which I never participated in any payday loans.

I received a call from these people.  They had my social no., my address and name. They wanted to collect $1129.00 from 2007. I do not recall any loan from then. I agreed to pay with a prepaid card that they said was OK.  It sounded suspicious so I checked here on line.   I will not make the payments now.  They said I will owe more money but I still feel it is bogus.  They don't know the name of the company I owe money to.

Google Department of Legal Services, they do many things.  Obtaining personal information for debt collection, however, is not one of them... They had had only my address, from 4 years ago, and claimed the rest was in a "sealed document", in which they could not open. They did not know who was filing the claim, initial date of claim or what the claim was regarding, only that "somebody" was trying to serve me paperwork for it...and I needed to call this number to tell them where I wanted to be served. What a joke.

Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

I got the same call today, first from a blocked/anonymous number that told me to call 1-877-879-0743 about a legal issue.  Called the 877 number and spoke to "?" (forgot his name), but he said there was a judgement against me, gave some fake court case # (which I know is fake since there is nothing on my credit record or registered in my city court office) and said I needed to be to be at my house to "sign for important papers concerning my legal issue".  He was super rude and I had a similar call last year.  I basically told him I knew that the debt he was trying to collect was not valid and to cease any and all contact with me.  He did have my name, number and SSN (not sure how), but this was a completely invalid attempt to collect a supposed debt (said it was a payday loan from Allied Cash Advance).  First of all, the statue of limitations (even if it WAS legit) had completely run out years ago and of course he offered me a "settlement amount to close the case".  Right...If anyone gets more information about the physical business address, make sure to file a complaint with the BBB and also contact the FTC and file a formal complaint.  I gave my local District Attorney Office all of the information I had and they said they would investigate.  Just block the number from your phone, never answer any blocked/unknown numbers and NEVER, EVER give them access to your banking information unless they can provide PHYSICAL paperwork to you through the USPS of the validity of supposed debt.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

    SHILL ALERT!

Several companies have been named as the user of that phone number.
For which of those companies do you work?
Full name, physical address and website address, please.

    Lurkers:
A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:

    * Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.   ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]

    Source:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via green dot, Western Union, or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.

IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit  the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
    http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

    Total BS
    Caller:  Melanie Abbot from 1-877-879-0743
    Attorney- Julie Jones
I demanded their physical address and Melanie gave me this:
    909 Broadway Dupree, NY 14201

I checked online and this address does NOT come up as anything.

The second I told Melanie to be quiet and listen to me she started yelling at me.  Then I yelled over her and told her that Im sitting at my computer looking at the website with page after page of this scam and she is full of BS.  Before I could tell her to send me the documentation they have showing my signature she had already hung up.  If this was a legit call they would not have hung up.

    Nice try!

I just received this same call again today.  This is the 5th or 6th time I have received this call with a different "case number" each time.  The first time, 2 years ago, I called to see if I had any court documents on file and then called the sheriff's department only to find there was nothing.  When I asked that the "sealed documentation from the original creditor they could not name" be sent to my Lawyer for review they seemed to back off and I did not hear from them for months.  Now though, they are calling my relatives' numbers and getting them worked up by telling them I am going to be arrested or even taken to court unless I call immediately.  They told me the original debtor was unknown because Allied Cash Advance owned hundreds of different copanies, but then they could not name any in my area.

YES!  got this EXACT call today, so I now know not to worry about it.  the lady who called me first said that they had 'no caller id' because they are a process server and they get lots of threats.  dept. of legal services sounded bogus, but I called anyway.  I told that lady that I was a victim of identity theft and I had a closed case in Colorado and an open one here in Kansas and that I could give them the number to the sheriff and police captain to talk to about it, but she said that wasn't necessary.  she even put me on hold for a bit (which made it seem legit) before coming back and saying they're going to do "a little more investigating, but you should be good for now."

so glad I found this site, it's REALLY helped me get a hold of this thing...
