- dantigerGot a call from 414-376-6032 and was told to call this 888 number. Don't know why a debt collector would call me since I'm debt free.

- J| 1 replyI got a call from this number. They are Americollect, a legitimate debt collection agency. As far as collection agencies go, these guys were very polite and willing to work with me on letting me pay off my debt later. They did ask some intrusive questions, but after I gave them all the information I was willing to give and told them I didn't want to answer any more they said ok and stopped asking. They also gave me the name of the company I owed money to, the amount I owed, the name of the collection agency and the name of the representative I was speaking with. I then called the company I owed the money to and verified that Americollect was indeed the collection agency they gave my account to. My biggest complaint is that Ameritech robo-called me the first time they called, but after I reported them to donotcall.gov an actual person called. Anyway, hope this post helps.

- Timothy| 1 replyMy parents got a message from someone saying they are a debt collector and to call back during his office hours or to go online to americollectpay.com
They didn't say who they were looking for though, no way to know if it's real or not so I am suspicious. I saw earlier comments that people thought medical bills or ATT were part of it but I checked those and my parents don't show any outstanding bills for them.- Caller: Americollect

- Elspeth replies to TimothyPer the FDCPA, you should not pay any caller who refuses to MAIL - do not accept email/fax/phone/text - proof of debt and proof your caller has the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal to mail this information within five days of their initial contact is a violation of federal law.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors
Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law. - willThey call me, but I keep sending my payments to the company I owe directly.

- Ann| 6 repliesI had worked at Americollect a few years ago for about 6 months. They are a legitimate collection agency. When they call someone, if they aren't speaking to the correct person, they can't give out much information. They often call someone at their parents house (where they haven't lived for many years) or their place of employment. When the client is at a clinic or other place of business, they usually ask for another # to reach you at. That is how the collection agency gets these other numbers.
For the person that says they pay the clinic directly, instead of paying it through the collection agency, that money is now going to any current bills that you have at that time. It doesn't go towards the bill that is in collections, because the clinic has already turned that one over to the agency.
Before they call you, they have already sent you a notice in the mail. There are so many people that said they don't look at their mail. Also, if you have a bill at the clinic, talk to them about. When you ignore notices from the clinic for 3 months, chances are that they will send it to collections. When it comes into collections, you still have a chance to get it taken care of before it gets reported to the credit bureau.
I understand what medical bills can do to a person, but when it's something that's less than $100, and you don't bother opening your mail or responding to phone calls, it will show up on your credit report eventually. - BigA replies to Ann| 5 repliesSo you looked up this number to post a glowing report on this company? Why would you do that if you knew who it belonged to?
After I went to their web site, it took me awhile to stop laughing, since their motto is “Ridiculously nice collections for 50 years”: http://www.americollect.com/
BBB gives them an A+ with 50 complaints and 9 negative reviews: http://www.bbb.org/wisconsin/business-reviews ... owoc-wi-7001006

Now read this:
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

- Ann replies to BigA| 4 repliesBig A, While I was bored one day, I googled Americollect's number. I'm not posting a glowing report on the company. I just stated a few facts. They do send notices out about the debt - a lot of people had told me that they don't look at their mail. And when someone is making payments direct to the clinic, hospital, etc., that payment is going to any bills that are current. It is not going to the bills that have been turned over to the collection agency.
- BigA replies to AnnI guess you must be bored again? Because you posted here 4 months ago, but yet here you are replying to me. Debt collectors routinely violate Federal and State laws simply to make a buck. All I posted was common knowledge gleaned off the internet. If it makes it harder for you to earn your commission, then so be it. Perhaps you should get an honest job.
- Pudge replies to Ann| 1 replyI'm surprised these thieves are still in business. Here's a report on the FTC's lawsuit from 2003

And here's the FTC's report on their 13 million dollar settlement in 2008
https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-release ... returned-287000
And this is just one of the MANY pages of complaints about this unethical group of "people."
OK...admittedly a bit confused here: Some people report Americollect as the caller and some say Ameridebt. Found several other number threads with the same mixing of the names. So the above information is about Ameridebt but here is some about Americollect.
