Local debt collector to pay $1.75 million

Federal officials said they are trying to send a message to other debt collectors to stop harassing people over debts they don't owe.

Many debt collectors use software, known as "robo dialers," that automatically call the same people multiple times a day. With Allied, such calls continued even after people insisted the firm was calling the wrong person or that they did not owe the debt, the FTC alleged in a federal lawsuit.
It also alleged that Allied often didn't take adequate steps to determine whether information about consumers was accurate.

In addition to paying a $1.75 million penalty to the U.S. government, Allied agreed to other measures, most of them already required by law. They include suspending collection efforts and conducting a reasonable investigation when consumers dispute a debt. The firm has also agreed to not use abusive language, another allegation in the FTC's lawsuit.

Allied did not admit wrongdoing in the settlement, but said in a statement that repeat calls to wrong numbers have been recognized as an "industry issue" for several years. The company said it has developed statistical methods to reduce such errors and now relies on a new system to better identify consumers' phone numbers.

This company uses a "robo caller." I get 5 to 5 calls per day. I have an answering service, but they never leave a message. I have no bad debts.

Check your credit scores and history at thje three credit bureaus, and then sue them kif yoour records show "No Bad Debts."

This has to stop. This idiot calls ten times a day. Call him back and get a very bad English speaker. Gov better start doing something to get rid of these nut jobs.

This # calls several times a day and sometimes within minutes of itself ....  I have not answered and they do not leave a message .....  Sometimes the header shows "Toll Free"  other times the number is placed on top as the "name" .... They have  called out of the allowed time range  .......

The suggestions by Muzzy above are good ones ...... especially the  "waste their time"  ....if you answer they get charged usage time on their 888 line ......meaning it is costing them $$$......so run up their minutes ...

They call at 6:30 and 8am...as well as 6:30 and 8pm. . On the dot!!!! I dont answer bcse they dont leave a msg..itts annoying..its everyday, harassment. Tired of it. If they would atleast leave. Msg then i sould atleast call bavk or even answer.

This number comes up on my caller id several times a day, and has for weeks.  After reading several posting here I decided to call them.  They answered as "Allied Interstate."  I stated that "this number keeps coming up on my caller id and I'd like it to stop."  He then said "we're looking for [me]".  I stated, "yeah, I'd like the calls to stop."  He said "removing your number from our list."  I told him "thank you" and hung up.  hopefully this will be the end of it.  I will be sure to post again if I receive another call.  As several have stated, there's no message left when they call, calls come several times a day, and when I did speak to someone, the person had a heavy accent.

This company calls constantly.  I finally answered and they refused to even say who they wanted.  A guy with a thick accent said it was a "personal matter".  I don't owe any debts.  I have already reported one calling place to the Arkansas Attorney General's office and they made it stop.  Guess I'll be doing this one, too.

Yes. I got the same call stating Allied Interstate. It's a hobbie dobbie so of course very hard to understand what he says. I just hang up.

Same story as the rest.   Calls multiple times a day. Either no one is there when I answer or they don't leave a message if I don't answer. Very frustrating.

The company is Allied Interstate, LLC..  They call & then hang up when you answer.  So, I recommend that we all call them back at various times, putting our phones on Mute & Speaker , and listen to them repeat themselves.  I sugglest this be done while you have nothing better to do for amusement.  Great prank for the party scene!  Time to turn the tables and give them a taste of their own medicine.  Slimy company, lower than whale excrement.  United we stand, divided we fall!  Let's make their calling VERY unproductive!  Never answer them, and keep your phone on mute!  WTG!  Share your encounters with the rest of us HERE, so we can all have a good laugh!

Receiving calls from this number between 4-5 times daily on home phone and cell phone.

Strange calls daily lately, oly answered once and no response. I will not respond anymore.

I've got this same number calling me 5-6 times a day, but no one says anything? WTF?

They call  my cell phone some times 10-12 times a day. Been at it for a couple of years now, I do not want to change my number---and dont know how thye even got this cell number, as I used to do business only on my home phone.Yes, old debt discharged in bankruptcy court--they pick it up and then try to harrass person into thinking they need to pay this number ( who ever it is) payments on old debt that is already written off by the company ( company gets tax benefit fot this--so no guilt)  . I was told they are out of U.S. 800numbers--so all is not above board.  BUT HOW DO I GET IT TO STOP?

All of a sudden, I keep getting calls from this number.  From another site, I learned that this phone number is associated with the FACEBOOK ACCOUNT of KOM SOTSNAE.
