Had two calls from Melvin in the last few days. Think they would choose someone with a little less accent. Another reason to get rid of my landline. Being on a "Do Not Call" does very little anymore.

Someone called me from this number saying it was from the IRS and I would be arrested if I did not respond immediately. Said they were sending the sheriff because I was guilty of tax fraud, which I am not.

    Me too
Received call on my cell from "melvin" went to voicemail, which I have saved.  Not sure how that will help but, same as everyone else - he is threatening to issue a warrant for my arrest due to IRS fraud.

Got a call from the "IRS". Guy with a very strong Indian accent. Wanted to talk with my husband. Told point blank that I seriously doubted he was from the IRS because he had a very strong foreign accent. I could hardly understand him. Hanged up on him, then tried to call that number (888 393 2421) to make sure it was indeed the IRS. Nobody picked up. Placed a complaint on IRS website.

Rec'd a call from this number two times in two days. Each time it was someone with a very heavy accent, in a very noisy room. Callers claim to be IRS agents and demanding to speak to a particular person. I told them I'd take a message and when I ask for a case number or filing year that it is regarding they would become defensive and threatening.

8-26-14:  I received a very disgruntled threatening call today from this number 888-393-2421 about some type of tax evasion and IRS debt, etc.   Threats like this are an illegal form of harassment at the federal level (post 911) and should be reported to the authorities.  If enough people report him he will be taken off of the streets.  He sounded like a possible Philipino accent or Indian accent.  His name was Melvin.  This is a total scam.

Just now got a call from this number.  "Melvin" left me the same message others have been reporting about owing the IRS money and having a potential warrent for my arrest issued.  Melvin has a very heavy Indian accent and is at times difficult to understand.  He did say that I could call him back at the same number with any questions and politely tells me to "have a good day."

Same here, the story checks out fluidly with the others on this site, some. Melvin fellow called my mother and left a very nondescript message attempting to scare her into calling back. Thank god my mom is smart enough to see a scam and ignored it. Do not play into this, it's just another idiot trying to prey on those who don't know any better.

I have gotten three increasingly irate messages from Melvin Belcheck with the heavy Indian accent of the "IRS Tax Audit Dept." insisting they were about to issue a warrant for my arrest.  The number he called from was 1-888-393-2421.  The number he wanted me to call was 1-888-393-2121 or 203-701-1071.  The IRS would send notice of any such issues through the US mail...

    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Repeats-Warning-about-Phone-Scams

ANNOY THEM!!! CALL THEM BACK OVER AND OVER- WASTE THEIR TIME!!! THEY WILL EVENTUALLY LEAVE YOU ALONE!!!    http://www.myfoxdfw.com/story/26258351/on-you ... s-to-admit-scam
    Message said to call 203-701-1071....
Woman named "Breann Smits" said money owed to IRS. Then "Supervisor George Simpson" 888-393-2421 gave a badge # of 151395 then later said it was 159395... Couldn't even get their lies straight.

Here is the info from the IRS pasted below....

***"If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue, if there really is such an issue.

If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to TIGTA at 1.800.366.4484.

If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint."***

IF you have been scammed out of any money, contact your local law enforcement to report it.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf).
