Called my family, friends trying to collect on an Instant Cash Loan from 2005.  They told my family and friends that I would be arrested for check fraud, go to jail and my family and friends would be subpeanoed.  They call themselves "investigators" with Fowler Gibson and Associates.  I asked them to send me documentation outlining this supposed debt that I owed and they transferred me to another "investigator".  I am reporting them to the FBI, Texas Attorney General and FTC.  But I am concerned that they will continue to contact my friends/family and continue with threats.  It's horrible!

These jerks, so-called investigators did the same thing to me.  Started with my daughter and ultimately started calling me.  They are not investigators, they are low-life bill collectors and the debts they are trying to collect have long since been taken off our credit reports as they have been resolved.  Don't fall for their tactics.  The calls I got came from a 713 area code so I reported them to the Attorney General's office in Houston.  And I got my home and cell numbers changed.  They dont even use proper grammar.

Legit collectors per section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf *must* tell you at initial contact, or send you paperwork within 5 days of initial contact, the following:
    1. $amount of debt,
    2. name of the current creditor (which may differ from the original creditor who might have sold your debt),
    3. that debt will be assumed to be valid unless you dispute in writing within 30 days,
    4. that if you do dispute in writing within 30 days, the collector must mail you written verification of the debt,
    5. that if you ask the collector in writing within 30 days, the collector must send you the name and address of the original creditor if it's different from the current creditor.
If you don't get the 5 disclosures, orally or in writing (you do not have to ask for it, the FDCPA requires it), treat the collector like you would any SCAMMER. Scammers are using bought/hacked loan application data to extort payments for fictitious debts from victims and victims' families and friends.
The FBI warns about payday loan extortion scams here http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710
The BBB has issued several alerts on this scam, just google "bbb.org alert phony debt collector"
Report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

You're a scammer shill. Payday loan borrowers in default are never arrested and never prosecuted in criminal court unless they've shown criminal intent. They can be at best sued in civil court.

Db, Your husband got the same call that I did. My call came from 888-502-5209.  The man that called sounded very professional!  He called me twice this morning and I let it go to my voice-mail. It scares me that he has the last 4 numbers of my Soc.number. Since I have never written a bad check I had my room-mate call on her phone but it went to voice mail. So, I did call my police dept and an officer came over. He took the info back to the station, called me 15 minutes later and told me it IS a scam. I hope they get caught and do some time in prison!!!

    Called them out
They called (under the name Investigator Brown) yesterday evening while I was making dinner for my two little boys and my husband was on his way home. They used the last 4 digits of his social security number AND the name of the institution we bank with. They said that he wrote a bad check for $1,200 but they had the authority to settle it today for $525 over the phone. After playing the voice mail for my husband over the phone, I looked on the internet and saw this page. I called the bi*ch back and asked her how she slept at night, cursed her out and told her to f*ck herself. Then some dude called and left a message for my husband again saying that his wife (me) was very rude and he will now have 6 hours to pay the amount. He kept droning on about how I was ruining my husband's reputation and chances for clearing this up. He called three more times and I told him to blow me each time. I am furious. Now, it's my turn to harass them. I cannot believe that people will stoop so low.

The called from the following numbers:

    713.429.0291
    678.373.4451
    888.376.7142

to be honest since this all is over I actually did this because I thought that I would get a way without paying it back I thought that closing the bank acct would not give them a trace back to me but wen the evidence was brought before court they had me cornered but since I didnt have a record they jus let me pay it off but you dnt have to believe me I jus thought this would be helpful to you all

This Investigator Barnes left me a message on my office phone. Stated I was being accused of check fraud and could be arrested. Claimed he had the last 4 of my social but would not leave on v/m. He left the # 888-502-5209 x104 as a call back # but the actual call came from 804-325-1750. I promptly called back the # and told the investigator to take note of the # on his caller ID and make sure he never called again. That I had investigated him and he was a scam, that I filed a complaint with my local police dept. He said who are you? I said, your the investigator...figure it out....Funny thing is....I dont even use a checking account so how could I commit check fraud.... Moron...do your homework if your gonna try to scam people
