It's a legitimate number sponsored by the 3 major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.  You have to enter your Social Security Number and address so they can properly identify you.  You can opt out of receiving credit card offers for 5 years or permanently.  It's not likely they will call you. You must call them to get off the credit card junk mail lists.

If you receive these unsolicited offers and are going to move, I highly recommend you opt out about a month before you move.
Offers are sent by bulk rate or standard first class postage and may not be forwarded to your new address.

It's not unusual for a substitute mailman to deliver an offer to your old address after you moved.  (Your regular mailman knows you moved and won't deliver any of your mail to that box if you filed a change of address form with the post office) If you don't opt out, anyone moving into your old address or someone stealing your junk mail will be able send in the offer and get a credit card in your name.

I permanently opted out of these offers at my old address and never again got a credit card solicitation.  At my new address, I went one step further, I froze my credit with all 3 agencies.  They will send you a PIN number that will temporarily un-freeze your file if you want to apply for new credit.  With my credit frozen, no one can open any accounts in my name, even if they have my Social Security Number. With your credit frozen, you don't need any of these expensive credit monitoring services to monitor your credit profile because no one will be able to open any new credit in your name.

With all that's going today and how easy it is to steal an identity, you need to take every precaution possible to protect yourself from those who can make you penniless at the click of a mouse.

Incidentally, I just got a form from Experian after I froze my credit, they are offering me to Opt Out for my new address.
If I send it in, they will also notify the other credit bureaus that I do not want to receive credit card solicitations. I'll just call the 888-567-8688 number. It's all automatic, quick and easy.

I called this number and at first was not going to proceed, but I took the advice to skip the ssn part and it worked. I just said "no" when asked for it and the second time I said "no" the computer voice said "ok, lets proceed." I do hope I stop getting these- I probably get 2-3 per day...such a waste of paper!

Thank you Anon for reminding me about 1 888 opt out.   I use this before and completely forgot about it.   This time I did not give my SSN.  I wait for the call to disconnect after the system asked me three times.   It moved on to my birthday and address.   Thanks again 👍👏

Received a letter from Personal Lending group saying that I was pre-selected for a loan up to $35,000.  And then in the bottom "You can choose to stop receiving "pre-screened" offers of credit from this and other companies by calling toll-free 888-567-8688.  See the PRE-SCREEN & OPT-OUT NOTICE on reverse for more information about pre-screened offers".  When I dialed, it asked whether to remove the pre-screen for 5 year press option 1 and option 3 for permanently remove.  When I pressed option 1, asked SSN.  Is it legitimate?

    Solution! Go to their website,
optoutprescreen.com then scroll to bottom of page and select
'Click Here to Opt-In or Opt-Out' then from the choices you are given for opting in or out, choose the THIRD CHOICE,
    'Permanent Opt-Out by Mail'
That brings up a form on which you -- !!--can, but aren't required to--!!-- give your SSN and birthdate along with your name and address. Again, REPEAT, you can enter your name and address, but you are NOT REQUIRED to give your SSN, nor are you required to give your birthdate.
Then print out the form (by following the directions), sign it and send it in by snail-mail! You're done!

They called and said that the IRS was investigating us for fraud. They said that the local police would arrest us if we did not call a number. I did not call because I knew it was a lie. The IRS sends out letters, they do not make threatening calls.
