- Tired of themCalls my friends and tells them I have a case against me. When they answer the phone they call themelves "partner with the legal department". Gets mad because I refuse to verify my personal information to a complete stranger over the phone. Very hateful on phone when speaking to you. Makes reference that the crime of fraud has been committed and I am being taken to court. Refusal to mail any requested paperwork. Claims I was uncooperative and he told me i was going to be served right before he hung up on me. SCAM!

- Batmj| 1 replyThey have called themselves several different names when I have spoken to them. And now they are claiming this is a different loan than what they said it was before! So annoying!

- Alfalfa replies to BatmjHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ - MonicaWe received a phone call from a local number... they told me that my sister had been caught in a crime and was on camera but they can help her if she calls back as tomorrow charges will be pressed. They have called my whole family and provided this 888 number as the call back for my sister to contact them. They also told my mom it was an issue with her social... so which is it is my question... maybe I can get more information out of them if they call again...

- rickReceived a call from 818-208-5272 regarding a complaint call. Told me to call 888-732-1025
- jmnReceived a call from a 586 code, left message to call 888-732-1025, at which you can only leave a message. They called my husband, who of course called me in a panic. Not 5 seconds later get a call on cellphone from 203-204-6179. Pick up and it is William Stevens (his cell phone is what he called me from) from Mediation Firm of DC & Associates. Telling me I have an outstanding payday online loan from First Bank of Delaware and I have to pay immediately at $900 or it will be $1300 in 15 minutes. I ask him to send everything in the mail to me. He refuses and said that had been done in 2011 and 2012 several times and they never received any returned items so I was just ignoring it. I asked what address he mailed to, which turned out to be an address we moved from in 2011. I told him if it was actually mailed to that address it would have been forwarded to me (never received anything from them because they really didn't send anything) or it really would have been returned from them as undeliverable. He said he would email me info. I again stated, no, You must send to me by US mail. He again refused and said he could fax. I again stated no, You must send to me by US mail. He than accused me of not taking this seriously and he was just trying to clear this up before he had to take my wages, savings, house, etc. I asked if he had a wage garnishment, and he completely avoided the subject. Kept telling me he was sending to local court to and he was trying to avoid doing that. I kept repeating to send to me in US mail and he completely refused. I asked for company number and he gave me 888-813-6369 but said they closed in 15 minutes (this was 3:45 p.m.) so I better clear it up now. What collection agency closes at 4:00?? Why can't Mediation Firm of DC & Associates be googled?? Let's see if anything comes in the mail.

- Pam replies to JSame here, they called my daughters phone saying they had her name and number listed on someone named Byron's case and that he has a case against him and a complaint against his ss# and name. I asked who this Byron is they said his full name and DOB was 1971. I went on to tell them she is 20 yrs old and why would some man old enough to be her dad list her name and number on his mess. Scary thing is, they had her name and number and were harassing her looking for this man. I told them to leave her alone or I would call our state attorney general's office and file a complaint. They spoofed the call to make it look local and left messages to call the 888 732 1025 which goes from ringing to a busy signal right away, for sure a scam and I am so sick of it all.
- AwVery unprofessional. Try to force you to pay for something you don’t own or no about. Very rude and facts were wrong!
