This number contacted me saying :  after several failed attempts to contact you, you leave my company no option but to close this matter as attempt to defraud a financial instituition, and this will affect your status with the FDIC.  No name of the company, no name of the individual who called, came from a spoofed local number, have received phone calls from that same spoofed number a few weeks ago with a different contact number to call back.  Violation of many debt collectijng laws right there...

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

I have been receiving calls from many spoof numbers claiming they have made numerous attempts to clear up an old debt and I had left them no other option than to begin legal proceedings.  One of the many problems with this is they are asking for a different person altogether.  I am not the person they are asking for.  They leave this number to call back and today for the first time they said they were "MACS".   They also said my social security number was tied to this debt and that they would contact any employer I have been associated with for the past 12 months.  They said it would be in my best interest to contact them immediately.  I had contacted an attorney friend and he advised me to disregard this.  Do not call them back under any circumstances.  So I have ignored the calls and they still keep coming.

This number keeps calling my mothers house and leaving a voice recorded message for me. They call their company MCAS and the message is in regards to my social security and bank account. I do not have a bank account and I don't know how they got my mother's home number when I don't even live there. SUSPICIOUS!

Have been getting the same kind of calls from a "spoofed" local number like everyone else has.  The message sounds like a recorded one with some airhead reading from a script.  He identifies the number to call as 888-732-9785 which he claims is MACS (Mid-America Consumer Services) which may or may not be a collection agency.  I have received nothing in writing regarding whatever debt they are calling about since the message does not give any information except threats that information about my assets and social security number are on file.

This call must be a scam from a crook or some scumbag debt collector as I do not answer any call from someone I don't know nor do I call back any number referred to on the message.  I had my debit card hacked by doing that once and if my bank hadn't caught it, I would have been in a world of hurt.  Never answer a phone number you do not know, nor call anyone back at a phone number mentioned on any suspicious message.

    Mr Annoyed
Getting calls for the past 2 weeks. First it started as a "Melanie Cane" calling from Mid Atlantic Services from a toll free number (855-292-6788) and that she needed verification of employment before sending it of to the human resource payment department and to call her back at 716-261-4708. She called again that week from the same number stating she again needed verification of employment. Then a guy started calling from an unavailable "local" number. Didn't state his name but said he was from "MACS" and that my name and soc is attached to an asset and liability search request which will lead to an employment verification being sent to any and all past employers in the past 12 months. Told me to call a 888-732-9785 number. Same guy called me back this week from said "local" number saying there was a possible check protest claim against my name and soc and if placed could affect any current banking I may have and left yet again another different number, 877-818-8108 to call back. Today he called back yet again, they never give up, left a message saying now that the claim was sent to a local mediator for failing to comply and once sent to my HR department couldn't be retracted and my HR department would be in contact with me but if I call back before its sent they would work with me. Gave me the same 877-818-8108 number to call back.
