- PSCarI get calls all the time from these people. Of course it's a scam. However, I am a full - time college student and I am out for the summer so needless to say I like to f$#@ with them when I have nothing better to do. haha
- Lynn| 1 replyThis is the second number that has called me in the past 24 hours saying I am delinquent on my on-line payday loans which is not true. Two men with heavy indian accents called saying that I have had criminal charges filedon my name and social security number and asking if I have an attorney. Of course I said no. This time I was prepared though as I had talked to my local law enforcement after the call yesterday. When I told the man this an that he is nothing but a scam he said that if I believe he is a scam then I could tell that to the legal officer that would be at my door and hung up. This is ridiculous and getting old. I called back to ask the name of the law firm and was told it is a paid attorney service and when I said that tells me nothing I began talking In another language and hung up on me. I have learnt from them that I will never do anything online again.

- Angiekeep getting calls from a guy claiming to be Adam Spencer from the Law office of Johnny Best. He also called one other time claiming to be Lance Cook. This guy has a heavy accent. I finally called back after seeing this and listened to his speech of what was going on. Apparently Advance Cash USA (not a real company) gave me money and now I am claiming fraud after they have attempted to collect a debt and run off with the money. He said that he will be getting with the Supreme Court of Texas and with the state sherrif's office and also with my employer. He threatened that I will be suspended from my job, and all this other stuff. After he was done, I informed him that 1) giving personal information to someone else other than me is against the law (he left a message with one of my coworkers, 2) he not allowed to call my place of employment again, 3) I never took money from any loan place especially that company. He then got upset said he was going to file the paperwork so that i can get sued and hung up. A few min afterwards, I called back and informed that I will speaking with my lawyer and filing a suit against his "law office" for slander, harrasment and divulging personal information to someone else. He said he was on the other line with the Supreme Court of Texas and i will be suspended, I said okay and hung up.

- Elspeth replies to BrendaThis is a scam - this information is per Alfalfa's previous post on this.
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/phantom-debt-co ... ory?id=16512428 - RNBI received numerous calls from this number (916) 259-9381. I returned the call to find out what this call was in regards and asked for the person who left the message at my job - his name: RICK TAYLOR. When I called back and asked for RICK TAYLOR - the person talking claims that RICK TAYLOR is his paralegal, and that he was not in at the moment. He notified his-self as: JAMES BEST, Attorney at Law.
He went on to ask me if my last four digits was XXXX. I asked what this was in regards to and he was getting irritated and told me to just answer the damn question. I then told him "who the hell do you think you're talking to?" and he hung up on me. I called back and no one answered but there were a series of beeps like a fax machine would give.
After a couple times trying to call the number back, someone finally picked up and asked me is this (so&so), is your social security number (XXX-XX-XXXX), is your email address (___________@gmail.com). Without confirming anything that was being asked, I continued to ask the same question to him: WHAT IS THIS IN REGARDS TOO? I could tell that he was becoming aggravated by his escalated tone of voice, by the unclear accusations that was being made, and by the assumptions he was demanding.
He then notified me of a lawsuit for debt of a payment for a loan from Advance Cash USA in the amount of $500 that was owed within 1hour, or my case would be turned over to the local "state" sheriff department. I continued to ask the same question: WHAT IS THIS IN REGARDS TOO?
He claims that the police would be coming within the hour to arrest me for the insufficient overdue account pending against me in the amount of $500. He claimed that I should get arrested, wait it out, and plead my case in court and to justify myself in the court of Law. He even offered me a solution to pay the full amount by Western Union to clear and settle the pending debt listed in my name, social security number and registered to my email address.
I informed my husband and he continued to reassure me that if this were Legit, the legal authorities would have notified me by a summons that would have included a court date with all the legal documentations regarding the pending accusation. (Name, Address, Phone Numbers, Reason for Complaint, etc.)
Realizing that this is a SCAM, you can never know how deep people can dig to get what they want. If you are applying online for personal loans or any kine of loans, know that there are vultures out there that can damage your self-esteem, ruin your sense of nervousness, and just get you all in a bind during your day.
I reported it to the local police station, googled the number and found that I am a victim to this scam like many other people just trying to get by in life.
ADVISE -
I filed my complaint with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
