This person has called my job many times. I called back and spoke to someone with a very tick accent and he told me I owed 748 dollars. He told me he was sending the police to my job in an hour to arrest me. I tried calling back and no one answers. He had me scared for days but now after reading this I feel so much better. How do I get this man to stop calling me??!! Please help.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

This foreigner keeps calling my cell phone and business phone. I can't really understand a word he says, and he is as dumb as a rock. I told him 3 times that I was the person he was asking for when he called and he still asked a 4th time. He keeps threatning me with a lawsuit and court and arrests and all kinds of stuff half of which I can't understand what he is saying. I can't really understand who he says he is or the law office he is with. I think I got the name John out of his little speech.

I keep getting these calls from a Mark White attorney. Cant understand a thing he is saying. I can understand some of the things like I supposedly have a lawsuit with the states attorney. I have gotten payday loans about 2 years ago but they were paid IN FULL! Its hard enough to swallow your pride to get these types of loans but it was my only answer at that time. Now after going through that humiliation, I have to deal with these people who are very good at scaring me. I would really like to get an attorney but have no money to do that. Please, please if anyone knows who can help or maybe make calls to this guy to get him to stop calling my work and my cell, I would greatly appreciate the help. I am practically begging at this point. Thank you

Report them to the FTC and your State Attorney General.  -- Let your tax dollars work for you, besides, it's their job to prosecute these types of scammers.

In the meantime, whenever they call YOU take control of the conversation and DEMAND:
    --Company's FULL name
    --Company's physical address
    --Company's local telephone number
    --State of Registration
    --CCA#

Anytime they try to speak saying anything else, just speak louder and repeat: UNTIL YOU PROVIDE ME WITH THE INFORMATION I REQUIRE, NOTHING, I REPEAT, NOTHING YOU HAVE TO SAY IS OF ANY IMPORTANCE TO ME.  NOW, provide me with:

    and/OR
Buy a whistle and blow it in the phone.
If you have have any OLD country western CDs, put them on full blast and hold the phone by the player.
Tell them the call is being recorded.
Tell them your phone is being wire-tapped by (pick your choice) law enforcement for fraud (or whatever).
If you recognize the number, answer the phone: "Anti-terrorist Unit, how can I direct your call?"
Pretend you think they're a take-out restaurant and order a meal. Then get mad when they can't repeat the order back to you.
Be inventive and creative.  Have some fun and/or use them as a way to vent your general frustrations that day!

These type people don't know how to react when they can't intimidate the person being called.
It's YOUR phone.  They have NO right to invade YOUR home/life with their scams.  So, have some fun and give them some payback!

I was called by a man saying he was Shawn Martin with John Abrams office this morning and threaten me on my voice mail and it has happened by several other men with the same accent and same story but just different numbers.  This is a scam and so block them and if you do not know how to block numbers at home or cell and even work you can contact the companies that you use and explain to them and they will block them for you.

they called me and I "played the game". They said I owe $495.51 for a past-due payday loan; but if I send the money, they can call the courthouse and stop the sheriff from coming to my job! I don't have a payday loan. They hung up. These web sites are lying. They are not secure. Don't apply for a payday loan on the internet. Call it in.

I just received a call from this number stating he is an attorney and there is a criminal charge against me.  On top of that he is telling me I will be arrested and lose my job.  So I did kindly call him back and tell him I work for the Police. I called the number back to ask what company he represents, he hung up.  I keep calling and he keeps hanging up.
