http://www.cashnetusa.com/consumer-notices - Cindy Morgan replies to LynnI just got the same call said it was regarding my SS# and if my attorney didn't call them there would be a warrant out for me. I have done nothing, so I am sure its all a scam of some sort. I did email all the information to my attorney so they could check it out for me. It was also some foreigner with a strong accent also. What worries me is they had my work number and called me at work also. I told him my attorney would be calling them.
- ANonieMouseThese calls are likely not coming from a real bill collector, loan company, or any government agency. More likely, these calls are coming from cowardly criminals hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service. They simply use a magicJack device and your fear the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.
If you want to verify for yourself that this is a magicJack number, just search for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .
MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada. In India, see, for example,
http://magicjack.in .
So it doesn't take long to turn a profit, even if only 1 to 2% of the people they call are stupid enough to believe the scammers. And India has a high poverty rate, low salaries, and a corrupt government that doesn't cooperate with our government in arresting these scammers. So to someone in India, or in many other places, for that matter, it may make cold, hard economic sense to invest in a magicJack and randomly call blocks of numbers - particularly blocks known to contain cell phone numbers - in hopes of finding a suitably gullible person to scam.
In addition to the regular reporting channels, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp. This corporation is a fully-owned subsidiary of the company that sells magicJacks and is in charge of assigning telephone numbers to magicJack devices. I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.
The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html
Note that the page having information on how to lodge a complaint gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint to YMAX Corporation.
You should also make a complaint to your state's attorney general's office, letting them know (if true) that the calls appear to be coming from a magicJack overseas, and that YMAX Corporation appears to accept subpoenas from government law enforcement for information that might be used to identify the scammers and at least shut them down. - Anna| 1 replyThey keep calling my company looking for a former employee stating they are from the State Attorney General's office and I cannot have our number removed from their call list. Gave me a number to call which does not identify who the caller is and says the voice mailbox is full.

- ShawnThis number has called me 21 times within a two hour period. They state that there are criminal charges against my social security number and that I was going to be arrested. When I told them that I was about to walk into the police department they said good and that I would be arrested right then and would be spending 7 years in jail for criminal activity. When I spoke with the Michigan State police they said that there really is not anything that I can do because these people are not calling from within the U.S. and they cannot be traced to where the original calls are coming from. This is a total scam and are trying to scare people into paying them money. The State Police said they try to get you to pay them with greendot card so they cannot be traced either. Major scam!!!

- Joe| 1 replyHello and thanks to everyone for their feedback. I received the same call from this number and this guy going by the name of Mr. Marshall. He insisted for me to get an advance or loan from my employer before it was to late otherwise an officer would be in my home to arrest me. To be honest I was scared. But he said he will give until Monday to get the $ 2400.00 to get an out of court release. Hells no I'm going to call after reading all this. Watch out people.
- Elspeth replies to Michael WilliamsComplete scam. Debt is civil, not criminal, so no one is going to be arrested. Threatening you with arrest and jail time is a violation of federal debt collection law. Per the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) you should not pay any caller who refuses to mail - do not accept email or fax - or phone call - proof of debt/proof your caller has the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal to mail this documentation within five days of their initial contact with you is another violation of federal law. In other words, unless they mail written, verifiable proof that you owe them money, do not pay them - per the FDCPA.
