The fake process server/location specialist scam usually contains:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or that some sort of complaint has “come across my desk” and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work they need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and have to be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there is actually a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

got a voip call from the same number stating matter that has been placed with the office. First off folks, each state has a statute of limitations on debt. After a certain time, per state, they are no longer collectable and this includes online loans. If there is any automated info such as your name or supposed file number and not a live voice, that is a massive red flag. I just ignore it. If you owe someone money, its easy enough for them to find your address if they have all your info as they claim. If it was legit, you would have had to deal with it already.

When you don't know what you are talking about either take the time to learn or keep your mouth shut.

In two states that is true but not in the other 48 states.

I received a call from this # over the past couple of days and I called them back several times because a lady named Rebecca didn't like that I knew more than she did and was trying to say that I owed a place that I borrowed money from 14 years ago. I know for a fact that I don't because I still have the paperwork where I paid them back, I know the people that manage the place(small town) and about a year later after my last loan with them they were contacting me to see if I needed to borrow from them again and I didn't because I was and have been financially good. They said that if I ever needed to again to come in and see them because I was a great customer. So, even if I didn't pay them back the statue of limitations has ran out for my state. I will now contact who I need to about this scam.

That only means that they cannot take you to court for the debt.
    Quote:
A common misconception is that expiration of the statute of limitations extinguishes a debt. This is only the case in three states—Mississippi, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. See Miss. Code Ann. § 15-1-3(1); N.C. Gen. Stat. § 58-70-115(4) (applies only to debts owned by debt buyers); Wis. Stat. § 893.05. In those three states, collection contacts on time-barred debt violate the FDCPA. ...
In the other states, after the limitations has run, a debt is not extinguished, and collectors may continue to contact the consumer, seeking payment short of filing or threatening litigation. The CFPB rules do not prohibit collection contacts for time-barred debt.

This message is intended for (My name mispronounced) please conatct WRS in regards to an importamnt business matter we can be reached directly at telephone number 985-314-6227 and reference your file number ######## thank you.
    1. my information has been hacked so many times I'm now using LifeLock to let me know when I make a big purchase, apply for a mortage, apply for a car loan of online loan.
    2. I fell for one of these about 15 years ago.  They left a message with my Payroll Director!  I had paid off the payday years before but didn't have that bank account any more so no way to prove I paid it. So I paid the settlement amount of $5000 with a cashier check and overnighted it.
    3. A month later I got a call from the SAME PERSON! With the same lines!
    4. So if I bother to answer a call that is not a number I know I tell them they must mail me the information about the 'debt' and send me the tracking number.  Then when they ask for mymailing address I tell them to check my file and then I hang up - when possible I block the number!
