Have been receiving calls from "unknown caller" for the past several days. When I look at the CID list no telephone comes up (which I think is illegal). Somehow this scammer is blocking the number they are calling from so there is no chance to block the number or report it.
Any good call blocker will be able to block calls with blocked or no caller ID.

Annoyed
Got call and asked for my landlord by last name. Said they no longer live here. Response was: 'Oh really, very interesting'. Then asked if I was head of household and began a diatribe saying she was from the Leukemia Society. I interrupted and said 'goodbye' and hung up.

Got a call today from a private/Unknown number. I don't answer the phone unless I recognize the number on my caller id. The caller left a message. It was an automated message claiming to be from the IRS. They claimed that due to several failed attempts to reach us concerning our taxes, they were now filing a lawsuit against us unless we dial an 800 number that they provided to settle the issue asap. The call seemed fishy. First red flag was the fact that the IRS usually doesn't call from a private number, and second, we never received anything in the mail from the IRS concerning our tax return. This was also the first call that we have gotten of this nature. I googled IRS phone scams and found several articles concerning this issue. I ended up going to IRS.org, and reported the call. I am posting this, because this scam is going on all across the country, and it is important to shut it down asap.

Receiver of call
Today's "Unknown Caller" was from a charity, claiming to be taking donations for the police. I left him do his script reading to me and then in one long sentence said....
#1 sir, I give to my local PD and state fund raiser locally/annually.... #2 I don't believe a real charity would have their caller ID listed as "Unknown caller" and lastly, I will not be donated to you today, but have a nice evening.
As I was pushing the off button, he started reading more scripted stuff to no avail as I hung up.
Also noted: Clearly their list is coming from listings in the phone book, he called me by my wife's maiden name and since the first name is just one letter, he said Mr. Hxxxx
I am getting these calls 2 to 3 times per day from various area codes. Everytime I hit 1 to talk to someone I get an automatic hang up. It is infuriating!

I picked up the ringing phone on my land line a little while ago. The caller ID window said "private line". When I said "Hello" there was silence on the other end. Then, suddenly my phone was ringing up another line. The person who answered was a young Asian male who spoke classroom taught hesitant English --can't tell a Japanese accent from a Korean one. He said "Mame, I want to talk to you about your computer." I immediately retorted "I'm not interested. This is some scam." --- and hung up. After hanging up, I realized how odd it was that, after the initial silence on picking up, I should hear another line being rung up. I wondered if our line was being jumped for some one else to have a long distance call at our expense. I tried to call ATT to have them investigate but the automated voice said the system was too busy and I should hang up and try another time-- there went a time critical window of opportunity to check to see if someone was having an unauthorized call on my account. The ATT website was equally useless as it doesn't provide phone numbers for direct support contact on anything--- least all fraud or scam calls. Anyone have any idea what might have gone on with that call? Is it possible that someone overseas was jumping aboard our line? Please email me if you know anything about this. Thank you in advance of reading this. My email is [removed]
Posting your personal email on an open forum is not a wise idea. Although the spaces you placed in it might fool a bot scanning through the site, a troll would not be fooled and could use it for purposes you would not like.

. I have adopted a "zero tolerance" policy with any calls that have "Not Provided", "Unknown", "Unknown Caller", "Unknown Name", "Anonymous", "Name Withheld", or any variation of the above. I used to allow my answering machine to deal with them, but they seldom leave a message, or sometimes use a noise generator to try to fill up the machine. Now, I simply look at the caller ID, and if it says any of the above, I pick-up long enough to complete the call (1 sec.) and then promptly hang-up. They get charged for a completed call, and I don't have to listen to the phone ring. Then, I come here and look-up the number. I am amazed at the amount crap I have avoided with this method. This method works, there is nothing they can do about it, and it is immensely satisfying to run up their bill. Repeat as often as necessary. :-) Note: I have noticed lately that I am getting a lot of out-of-area-code calls from (purportedly) cell phones. These come up as "New York Call", etc. I'm still letting the answering machine handle these. I never get a message, and still look them up here. It's the usuall suspects, still trying to hide their identity. Do this for any suspicious call you do not recognise. Keep a list, and use the pick-up - hang-up method on them too!!! :-)

Say WHAT? Why are you replying to a random post on page 1 from like 3 or 4 years ago? Your writing is so poor that I am not sure what you're trying to say, but it sounds like you are threatening to sue the poster "Consumer". On what grounds? Your post makes no sense on many levels.
It doesn't just seem fishy, it stinks to high heaven of week-old dead fish rotting in the sun. The IRS doesn't threaten to sue you if you don't call a phone number, and if there's an issue with your tax return they will contact you by mail, usually by the address you provided them on your last return. The "IRS lawsuit" thing is just buzzwords used to get people worked up in a tizzy so they will be more susceptible to paying off the caller (by Western Union, no doubt) to make the problem go away.

A good call blocker will handle that automatically for you. They can be had for around $40.

I get a call every weekday at 9:00am from "private name private number" I haven't answer yet. Not my type of an ALAM clock. : (
If they are so predictable, use their predictability against them. Everyday forward your phone at 8.55AM to some awful place and at 9.05AM un-forward it. :-)
