Call from "Unknown Name;" "Private Number."

Over the last two months we seem to have those weeks where almost every day, usually in the evening a strange phone call would come in. The caller ID would say: Unknown Name, Private Number. 3/4ths of the time when we would say "hello," they hang up a few second later.  When they do actually answer, it's another "organization" asking for money. And each time this strange place calls, it's for a different organization. One time it's a fundraiser for sick kids, next time for cancer research, next time for fire fighters. Who are these people and would anyone possibly have their phone numbers?

One website connected to this string of calls is found at cdrfintl.com.

    Thank you!

We received many of these, a couple each day through the month of October and into the first 8 days of November.  They were for various political races and every candidate that they supported was Republican:  Many from Michael Baumgartner, and many from Cathy McMorris Rogers in support of Michael Baumgartner.  These were robocalls, but sophisticated enough to wait for the answering machine message to stop before starting.  Caller ID was blank for a number and 'Unknown' for a name for every one of them.

" unknown  name ,  "   private" number    could  be   anyone , anywhere  calling !!!!   DUH.........

    example:

when i  got  my  cell phone ,  i  asked  the company   NOT  to  make  my  number   "public" / listed  etc...........you  have  to  ask  to   do  this  , as  most  cell phone  companies  won't  tell you  this is a  free  option !

so  when i  place  a  call from my  cell ,  those  that  have   call display  will see  " unkown  name , unknown  number"..........

The dirty secret is that many charity calls are placed by a commercial fundraiser, such as Associated Community Services, Dial America, Donor Services Group, Harris, InfoCision, MDS, and TeleFund. These non-sales calls are exempt from federal DNC, even though such call centers are very much for-profit and pocket most of what their periodic campaigns collect. At times the ''charity'' client is itself a closet profit enterprise, compounding the deception.

However, as commercial entities, these hired call centers are expected to honor an internal no-call list and add any number upon request. Break that order, the FTC declares, and ''the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000.'' They are also covered to a point by other regulations for telepests, so you can kvetch about abandoned calls, bot calls to mobile phones, and so on.

What else to do? File complaints with the FTC and attorneys general, and the charity group doing the hiring. When the boiler room calls, try getting on a master ''no-call'' list for all of that firm's charity clients. If a given commercial fundraiser seems deaf to your demands, and/or merely renews its pestering with the next campaign, turn up your volume on paper. Send a cease-comm notice via USPS Certified with return card. It need not say more than to stop calling and writing whatever numbers and addresses you want protected.

A charity call campaign must usually be cleared through some agency or regulator in your state, and many states make activity reports available online. They often reveal a specified period of weeks or months in which the group is permitted to solicit, sometimes tracking well with the observations on these call forums. Find those reports and you'll find one more desk to advise of your displeasure.

Hey people, If you gave them your number why wouldn't you expect them to call?
Next time, just talk to them and waste their time. Pretend you're interested but give them no personal information. When they realize that you're a waste of time they'll take you off their list.

They call here every now and then listed as "Private Number", Etc.. Wasting their time since I never answer unknown unwanted callers..like I will never give a dime to any charities over the phone.. Real charities, etc, are quite easy to find.

Just wondering, What is a "Century Link number "?

Try a call blocking device or service.   They will automatically block "private number" calls.

    Chris,
I have a pretty good idea who keep calling unknown, private. But what can I do to revail this persons number. My daughter did TrapCall.com on her cell. But I have a home phone, she find the persons number, we know she is a State Reprentative in Brooklyn, NY. Now she is harassing me, I am not going to stand for it. I need proof of the number she is calling from.

    hi

" unknown  name  "  /   " unknown"   number    can    easily    be  legitimate  calls.....as  i have noted , when  i   signed  up   for  my  cell  phone ,   i  asked   that   it  NOT  be  listed   in any   directory.....
(  so  it's  a    unlisted   number  ).....a   good  safety and  security   choice....

(  anyone  can   request  this  from  their  service  provider)....there  are numerous  benefits ,  but  some  disadvantages   as  well........but   i  do   advise  this.

on  the  down  side ,   when i  call   friends and  family  etc.........their   call   display   shows   "   unknown  name /  unknown  number"...

however , i've   NEVER   had  any   fake  calls /  spam  coming  into  my  cell  phone...as  the  crooks  and  criminals    can't  find  it !!!!   all too good.....

IF  more  people  would  do  this.........well......the  benefits   would  obviously  be  great ,  and  we  wouldn't  be  here !

When I answer and ask who's calling they refuse to say. They have called a damn near 100x's since September of 2011. I've told them in no uncertain terms to knock it off, but apparently they think it's funny to continue to terrorize me at my home number. They call 7 days a week, morning, noon and night, NEVER ONCE identifying themselves or leaving a message. I would like to have a restraining order or maybe an order of protection against these stalkers!

Each week for the past 3 weeks, we have received a call that comes across as UNKNOWN NAME then has a 1 underneath it. No private number or anything just the number 1. It is more often than what I feel comfortable on receiving. There is never a voice or response..nothing.  Is this some loop type call where they get your number to make calls?  There has been nothing abnormal on my phone bill but this bugs me to no end!  I am seriously considering taking out something where the caller has to announce himself before we will have to answer. I don't want to do that but this bugs the heck out of me!  Don't these idiots have nothing else better to do...like live a real life!
