"Let them waste their time and money trying to call through and can't.."
Do you really think running a robo-dialer with a pre-record wastes any significant amount of their money? The real costs is the time of the live agent. This is a truly limited resource which they require in order to close a sale to generate their profit. Using a call-blocker simple speeds the process of getting to a non-blocked number, the robo-call catches nearly all of the irritated people who aren't going to buy anyway, leaving the naive few to transfer to a live agent. Answering every call, and even taking up a few minutes of an agents time flips THEIR technological advantage on it's head. This is how to let them waste their time and money - by getting a call through to a person where there will be NO SALE.
Why else do you think telemarketers started using robocalls in the first place? It certainly wasn't to make it more expensive for them.
I don't care if you answer calls or not. However, take a look at the strategies they use, look how they have to present and close a sale, and look at the true costs they bear for each part of the transaction. You should be able to at least see the truth that "up is not down" is suggesting.
"My phone service offers selective forwarding on my land line. I send all scammer numbers to another scammer number."
that is an awesome idea!
i also read about a "1" dial sound on answering machine so robo calls to voicemail still waste scammer time and money without soiling your ears actually talking to them.
Good insight there! Robo calls are a test run before the scammers ID and call the susceptible. I don't think they have a long term strategy though. They thrive on the novelty of the scam to catch people unawares. But the cc story, payday loans, outdated debt, etc have become old. People are more aware now thanks to sites like this. They need to study the current trends carefully and figure out something new that people are currently responding to in other areas and blend it with the old in a smooth unobtrusive way. But wait! To do that would take a brain, which they don't have. Ahahaha! So they will go on repeating the same ole technique over and over until Einstein rolls over in his grave. Insanity!
no, they get paid commission, and if they are not effective they are dismissed. you really think boiler rooms pay by the hour? screwing with them is the most effective way to fight scammers. may not be convenient for you people who have all you contacts on a Rolodex.
if my brother in law calls me, it shows as "cell phone" on my caller id. should i block him? out of state relatives call me and it shows "out of area". people i know get a new phone and call me.....should I block these people with some gizmo?
btw. I am registered here and as long as i post things i know y'all like there's no problem, but call blockers are the holy grail here. the sacred cow that must not be kicked so I reserve the right to post anonymously (as provided by the forum) on topics I know will strike a nerve.
you long time members give good advice (usually) and I value your friendship, and people like you are the reason I joined. However, this group mind mentality is just something that takes away from this site and diminishes its purpose.
So basically what you just said is that we are wrong and you are right? I guess that makes you an omnipotent being, sort of like a GOD? You obviously do not value our friendship. Because real people do not hide and post slurs against their friends.
Better yet - those commissions are paid out of profits from sales. You are not only denying the agent their commission, but the company of its sales. If they have no sales (or not enough), they cannot pay the agents, nor themselves. No company would continue telemarketing if it was a net loss.

btw, I have a personal reason for being here....and why I hate scammers with a passion. I worked in a boiler room myself.
I was fresh out of high school, I needed a job.. I answered an ad in the classifieds "Energetic people wanted for exiting new job opportunity. flexible pay...etc etc blagh blagh blagh" so i got an interview (I had no idea at this point what the job was) the guy asked me to read a paper out loud. he says i have a nice voice and I'm hired on the spot. next thing you know I spend the next three weeks in OZ three weeks is how long it took me to find out it was a scam. And i quit. called the state attorney generals office ad reported them. they were shut down.
so you see, I have a unique perspective on all this.
there was a score board on the wall with all our names and how much money we made. we had a robo dialer do the work for us. I saw co-workers get a bad call (with someone like me) and quit or at least have to take a long smoke break. there is a high turn over rate. they payed me cash my first week and the next two were commission, so every new employee cost them money. we had fixed hours so time we spent on calls was limited.
If i say something, I'm telling what I know. Hate me all you want but I'm trying to correct the wrongs I've done in ignorance...
yes you're right. You should make SURE it's a scammer number b-4 doing that. not hard to do as there's so many listed here. thanks for clarifying that point! we defiantly don't want to harass innocent people.
You know, I'm not going to be brow beat into seeing it your way. I'm not into entertaining illegal telemarketers or playing games with them. You can do it all you want.. but don't try to tell me its better your way, to each his or her own. I'd rather spend my time helping people here with suggestions as to what they can do then spend my time on a phone every time some nitwit try's to call.
I also don't call numbers back since these company's are spoofing real peoples numbers along with real business names and numbers. Won't create yet more victims of them.
If you have the time, more power to ya! To each his or her own!

Tired of telemarketers
Gotta say I haven't read this thread, so apologies if this has already been mentioned. There's a free service that works with a lot of different phones (Comcast, Verizon, ATT U-verse) and that blocks telemarketing calls. nomorobo.com. Do a search and you'll see the dozens of stories published in the mainstream media about how they won a grant from the FCC to figure out novel approaches to blocking these calls. I understand if you don't want to go directly to the link I've provided, but please take the time to check it out. I have nothing to do with the company; I'm just another poor slob that wants to be left alone by all of these telemarketing folks and am happy to share what I've learned with others.
Good luck to all!

it should not mater if I am registered, anonymous or a newb.
I posted something as a RM and got a lot of thumbs up. a week later I said basically the same thing (but i wasn't logged in) and this time, got some thumbs down. (all because y'all thought I was a newb)
Just goes to show...
so, Tamianth (and others) what bothers me is the new people coming here and looking for answers and all y'all serve up is: "call blocker" or "ignore them" same-old same-old as if that's the ONLY answer.
It's not.
should it matter if I'm in the "in-crowd". If I eat lunch with the "cool kids" or out on the limb alone. should personal feelings stand in the way of truth? I was in the "in-crowd" at the boiler room but I sold them out for the truth.

I don't know what scammers make today but i can tell you what I made in the 90's. They gave me $200 cash my first week, and %25 commission after that. I made $400 "sales" an average day. that's $100 a day sitting on my bohunkus!
