- yef replies to meYou should post your comments on the thread for this number: https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-245-3668. When you look at the comments there, most people indicate it's a scam. Do NOT give these morons your address -- if they were truly going to serve you ... 1. they wouldn't call first - they'd just show up 2. they'd already have your address.
- lone stranger replies to me| 2 repliesYou are describing classic skiptracing activity originating from a collection agency. The discovery of the distant relationship is the result of data mining, and there are companies which provide these services for a fee. They may indeed have had a better fix on you, but chose to work more distant leads in order to maximize the embarrasment as a way of putting pressure on you.
There is reason to believe these may be bad actors, possibly outright fraudsters, and as has been pointed out, there is a thread you need to look at. Certainly their conduct in your case seems sketchy.
My advice is this. Ignore the calls. If they make multiple calls to the same person in their "skiptracing" they are out of bounds. Until they contact you in writing I would ignore them. The scammers rarely take this step. Should you speak with them, do not admit to anything, or suggest you are willing to make a payment, or some sort of arrangement. To do so compromises your legal position. Instead demand written validation, and tel them there is nothing to discuss until you have reviewed such a document.
Right now, before they contact you, go to the correct thread and read it. More importantly, educate yourself about FDCPA and FCRA law. Ther\se are laws which will protect you, but there are time limits, and rules to follow. You can start with the links below:

Any future posts by you should be made on the correct thread, but because I wanted to make sure you saw this information, I made an exception and replied to you here.
Hope this helps.

- annoymous| 11 repliesI got a letter from litigation management group saying owed 1817.02,also they can garnish my wages or take it from my bank if i don't pay. Ive never had any other contact with this group before. the paper looks real but when i try to call the for information no one answers real or scam ?
- Resident47 replies to annoymous| 10 repliesLone Stranger's advice from two months ago to study consumer laws applies to you, too. Your comment is too inarticulate for any reliable response. I'll poke at it this way ...
If it's the first letter from LMG it has certain disclosures, or *should* have them as required by federal law, giving you the option of disputing the claim within 30 days, which you should do via USPS Certified Mail with return card. You'll preserve the bulk of your rights under the FDCPA in doing so and make it much harder for a devious collector to get away with abusing you. If the letter actually says they're coming for your assets, that may be an empty legal threat and thus an illegal scare tactic. Compare the language it uses against what the laws allow; you'll size them up well enough.

Can a debt collector garnish my bank account or my wages?
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/askcfpb/1439/c ... r-my-wages.html - sladams replies to meI just rec'd letter from these guys saying I owe 1436.12 but there no indication to whom I owe this too. Also if it were an actual legal document it would have come from the courts either through certified mail or the sheriff knocking on ca.your door. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING I have already contacted my Attny. General and the Attny Gen. in Ca...
- sladamsI just did a reverse phone number look up and there is no info on the 888.254.5114# that is given . When i called it was a woman that answered with a baby crying in the back round (hmmmmmm).
This is a scam of the worst kind. the letter is threatening there are no disclosures they even threaten suspension of drivers license..... - sirjonesalot| 9 repliesI just recieved a letter from litigation management group. I called thde number the man says they are going to sue me and bring up felony charges on me and garnish wages if debt is not paid in the amount if 1000$, then said we can settle for 700 $.then asked for my current checking account number. The paper has no information whatsoever as to whom I owe the debt to. I asked him and he said US bank from 8 years ago.also he said that I would have to come to court in New York and I stay in ohio. Can somebody help?
- DaFox replies to sirjonesalotUS bank? Probably an old credit card debt?
Only two states have a Statute of Limitations of 8 or more years on CC debt, they are Wyoming and Rhode Island. If you are a resident of either of those states, you may be sued to recover monies, but you can not be charged with a felony for CC debt. If you are not in those states, then Litigation Management Group can go pound sand....

Demand a Debt Validation letter sent to you via USPS mail (not email, fax, or otherwise). They are legally obligated to comply, if they can not or will not, then they have no claim at all on your debt.
http://www.creditinfocenter.com/rebuild/debt_validation.shtml
More than likely, as they have already broke federal law by claiming they will have you brought up on felony charges, the whole thing is a scam.
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0258-fake-debt-collectors - Elspeth replies to sirjonesalot| 2 repliesFirst of all, there are no felony charges for failing to pay back a loan. Your wages cannot be garnished without a court hearing first. These are threats that disreputable debt collectors (or even scammers) use to frighten people into paying them money, even if the debt is actually bogus, has already been paid off, or is outwith the statutes of limitation for collection in your state.
Demand that the collector send you a debt validation letter which should state the original creditor, amount owed, date of loan, date of last payment, etc. The letter should also state whether this person is legally entitled to collect said debt in your state. DO NOT give him your banking information! Also, you would NOT have to go to court in New York. Again, this is a scare tactic. Ask yourself - if it was a legitimate debt collector, why would he resort to threats? Please read the FDCPA and learn your rights as a consumer.
If he will not MAIL (not email or fax) a debt validation letter to you, tell him this is legally required by law and that you have reported him and his company to the FTC and your state's Attorney General (and do so - the threats he made are in violation of the FDCPA). Any calls you receive from him, tell him you are recording every call (even if you're not). You may also wish to put fraud alerts on your bank accounts and with the three credit agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion).
Bottom line - if someone calls out of the blue, threatens you with felony charges and wage garnishment and will not send you the legally mandated debt validation letter - they are nothing more than scammers and you can ignore them. - kenna replies to sirjonesalot| 3 repliesI got the same thing last week but they called my work which is bs. Is this real. Said I owe $4699 from 08 at us bank but could settle for 1500
- not Michael replies to kenna| 2 repliesDo you owe the money? If you owe it you should pay. But only if you really owe the money.
There are scammers on the internet, calling and texting people about past-due debts that they don't really owe. The harass and make threats, trying to scare their victims into paying a debt they don't owe. If you don't owe the money you can safely ignore the calls. If you aren't sure you can ask them to send you proof that you owe the debt. Do NOT give them your address. If the debt is real they already have it. If they don't have your address that's proof that the debt is fake. - raeI have gotten calls also from people claiming that I owe us bank $600.00 from 2006. I used to have a bank acct there yrs ago but I had no loan or owed them any money. I would think that US Bank as big as they are would be checking into this scam. They never sent me anything in writing.
