The guy with the heavy foreign accent called as Officer Hunt and that I have three charges against me and I can pay $444 dollars for a payday loan I got in January or face the serious criminal charges. This is the second time I have gotten one of these calls in the last 2 months.

Get calls from this man named Cody Daniels about four to six times a day. Stating he is from the department of Crime Prevention, and that if I don't make a group of payments on some pay day loans that I will face serious criminal charges. This gentleman harasses me at work. He told a supervisor at my place of employment I was a crime suspect and he had been looking for me for weeks. I told the gentleman to send this information in writing of who I owe and how much and I have not received anything. He stated I would only get a confirmation letter 30 days after I make a group of payments and wanted my checking account information. The number shows on my work phone as blocked or as +052538374. He left a message with a supervisor at my job. I contacted the legal department at my job. I called the above number in the evening and it was an automated message stating the extension 199014 person was not available.

This is insane.  I just got 3 calls from these people who could barely speak english and now I am trying to figure out how to block them from being able to call my work.  They were saying the same BS that others have noted above.  When I told him that he called my work line and it was not appropriate to call this number and he got irritated that I would not speak to him.  What should I do?

"Officer Edwin Walker" called and said I was a prime suspect in a legal matter. He then hung up on me and called me back asking why I hung up on him. I said "I didn't" and he said that I have an outstanding loan that I am going to be sent to court for. He then hung up on me again. When he called back a third time I didn't answer it. He left me a voice mail message saying that since I "hung up on his face" he thinks I am ignoring him and I'd better call him back at 609-357-1173.

He then continued to call me another 12 times. I didn't answer any of the calls. When I called the number back, an automated message came on saying "that extension is on another line." This is total bull. If I get this guy on the phone again, I am going to tell him that I've contacted my lawyer because all he's doing is harassing me.

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
    1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
    2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
    3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
    4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
    5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

    Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
    By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com
    Monday, Aug. 3
    Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
    The BBB offers these tips:
    •    Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
    •    Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
    •    File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    •    File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.

READ THE INFORMATION I POSTED BELOW - including opening the links as they contain information to SHOW your EMPLOYER

Because the fraudsters make a special point of calling consumers repeatedly at work, employers must understand that the consumers are innocent victims of a criminal enterprise and cannot stop the calls from coming

I just got the same call (07/29/10 at 10:09 AM) from an "Unavailable" number, and a man with very broken english (asian, phillipine accent?) called himself "Tony Williams" left a voicemail stating that I needed to contact him or he would move forward and take legal action against me in a very important matter, but that because of the sensitivity of the issue, couldn't share any of the information over the messaging system. When I called back a female recording said, "Person at extension 199014 is unavailable. Please leave your message after the tone. When done, hang up or press the pound key. Sorry the user's mailbox can't accept any more messages. I'm sorry an error has occurred." The it hangs up. Fishy stuff, I don't know who they think they're fooling, and I seriously hope that no one is falling for this.

The reason I first thought this was a scam was because the voice went straight to a threat of legal action, which has never happened with any collections call I've ever recieved, and as far as I was aware, they were not allowed to do. I hope no one is falling for this!

    Good Luck to You All

I got that very same phone call today at my work stating that I was a primary crime suspect and that if I didn't pay them $1300 that the case would be filed in my county.

What ever happened with this for you? Did they stop calling?

This person left a message stating he was Officer Henrick James and that there was a legal issue that needed my immediate attention. When I called it back it went to some funky voice mail then an error. This person needs to be stopped

Another thing you should do if your receiving these phone calls is to contact your local attorney generals office. This was the direction I was given by my local PD because the attorney generals offices are trying to shut these scam artists down.
