These scammers often:
•call you. But when the IRS contacts people about unpaid taxes, they do it by postal mail, not by phone
•use common names and fake IRS badge numbers
•know the last four digits of your Social Security number
•demand payment via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS doesn’t ask for either of these payment methods, nor will they ask for credit card numbers.
•rig caller ID information to appear as if the IRS really is calling
•send fake emails that look like legitimate IRS correspondence
•make a second call claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, rigging the caller ID information
To protect yourself from imposters who call, claiming to be from the IRS:
•don’t provide any account or other personal information. Hang up the phone.
•never wire money to a person or company you don’t know. Once you wire money, you can’t get it back.
•if you owe - or think you owe - federal taxes, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions. You also can visit the IRS website at irs.gov.
•if you’ve already paid your taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
•forward emails from the IRS to phishing@irs.gov. Don’t open any attachments or click on any links in those emails.
•file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint. Include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint.

- Dee| 1 replyRec'd a called from this number asking for my mother. Person stated to be David Clark calling from the IRS. He even gave a reference # of 149625 for the call. Called the phone number back and the voice mail stated that the person at this number is unavailable. It is not the official IRS call center prompted greeting and automated customer message. Also, an official IRS agent would have left their IRS employee badge number. These fraudulent [***] who prey on hard working people need to apply their knowledge and do something positive for the common good of society. If the "common good" is not the #1 choice, [***] OFF.

- Shelley| 1 replyI received a message yesterday from 202-506-9461 and had to listen to it three times to understand the guys english, never did understand the name. I attempted to call back and got the mailbox is full. He said don't disregard this message it is extremely time sensitive. This morning I got straight through. They said I was going to be arrested today for tax fraud due to discrepancies over the last 6 years of miscalculations. Very scary because we did have a miscalculation, but was resolved with the IRS. They also said they tried to send certified letters March 1 and April 9. I work from home so that was a red flag right there, I always get the mailman letters. What are they Scamming for?

- KelliI just got the call, didn't catch his name, but he had heavy middle east accent. He asked for my husband and I said he's not in and he asked if I would take his number and have him call back. I said "what is it about" He said about our IRS payment, it was wrong and a lawsuit has been filed against him. I laughed at him and told him he was full of s*#t and he said "no don't ignore this" and I told him send it by mail, and hung up on him. Sounds like I will hear from him again by the looks of the threads above. Really sad that we can't stop this type of scams because some people are stupid enough to fall for this or else they wouldn't do it.
