I received similar voice message from a guy w/ a heavy Indian accent fr the Treasury Dept.  he threatened if I don't return the call, it would be a federal criminal offense (no such thing).  I read the posts here and disregarded the voice message.  This must be a scam.  If IRS wants to reach you, you would receive something in the mail.

now it is a robo call -- no one on the phone, just a recorded message. And we have had about 6 of them this morning  (a couple were just the kind where there is a pregnant pause once you answer, and no one there) with the same recorded messages, as others have noted - saying from US treasury, and if we don't call back we will be subject to arrest. Then leave number to call back.

Call came in from 213 293 3920 from a man stating his name is Steve Martin who and he was calling from Legal Affairs US Treasury with an enforcement action and if I don't cooperate, it will be a federal criminal offense.  He had a very strong accent -- likely Indian -- I had to listen to the message a few times to understand it.

I just got a call from (213) 293-3920. He had a heave Asian accent. Calimed he was from the U.S. Dept, of the Treasury and not to ignore the call or I would have to face a Judge or Grand Jury, LOLOLOL. What an idiot! I called back to scare the crap out of this guy but I got a recording saying the number is not available. Obviously a scam, the IRS does not call you unless you have ignored several notices and or you request to be called. I hope he calls back !!

The endgame is to scare you into making a payment to them in a Green dot money pak or similar device which is untraceable.  Basically they are trying to scare some money out of you.  They are from India or Pakistan.  Get a call blocker, if they continue to bother you.

We also got 2 of these calls in the last 2 days. Always after hours. Says his name is STEVE MODERN-This is an enforcement call said I owed the US Treasury, If I did not respond I would face a Magistrate Judge or a Federal Jury for a federal criminal offence. At the end he says: Help us help you! Blocking his number and reporting it.

I had a message left on my phone from Steve Martin saying something about a US Treasury matter, magistrates and grand jury.  I too called the stupid number from my land line and received a message stating that my call didn't go through.  I then called from my cell and the phone hung up after four seconds. I am so sick of these people who are lazy and don't want to work, so they try to scam everyone else. Stupid, go get a life with a  job.

The guy calling me is Steve Martin with heavy Indian accent.  When I called back the call disconnects b/c I have a restricted number.
Why does he have your SS # and bank info? Or does he really have it?.  Close your bank account immediately.

same as prior caller.  Indian accent Steve Madda (sp?) from "U.S. Treasury" and their intention to proceed with criminal matter.  This was left on voicemail.  I was suspicious because they did not ask for any individual.  I had a housemate briefly years ago - and am still getting calls for his unpaid bills.  This seemed unrelated - part of a usual scam.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
