Agree w/ G. Creason but Theresa and others... wow... Paranoid? …A little? Where's your tin-foil hat? Jesus people it's no fraud....  The only frauds here are the people that protest obsessively.  I rarely use my B of A card, but when I tried yesterday to order a $500 laptop online, (unusual behavior for me) my card info didn’t go through. No big deal, I used my Wells card instead. First thing this AM at 8:01 I missed a call from Bank of America… no message. So I looked it up here... They called again this afternoon… asking me about my card use… online… LAST NIGHT!  So tell me how can this possibly be a fraud when I was the only one aware of the card use and I was the person doing the ordering?  B of A was doing exactly what I expect and hope my credit company would do…. Covering my a*ss.  I understand being vigilant but lighten up a little and do your freakin home work before screaming fraud… wolf…. Zombies!  Wow.

Received a cut off VM from 302-731-1166 (outbound number) which instructed me to call back 866-518-1695.  Spoke with a man named Ricardo Mapa, who claimed to be a fraud department associate and proceeded to ask me for my account information.  I told him I didn't feel comfortable giving him that information and answered basic questions.

Called Bank of America to question this, and they confirmed that both the number and the name of the associate checked out.

Short answer, outbound line only that was once assigned to a Joey Peterson.  I work for a large company that uses dozens of local area coded outbound lines.  They sometimes come up as the old assigned user.

It is a company that makes the fraud calls for B of A cards.  I updated my address yesterday so they were calling to verify that no one had stolen my cards or tried to change my address and intercept the new card. They didn't ask for any personal information other than the phone number they called to reach me.  They asked for an approximate balance on one bill and that was it.  NO personal info.  it's plain old card services, where you write your check to every month when paying your bill.

I got a call from this number saying it was BofA Fraud. I pressed "0" and eventually got a rep. I asked if she could proof it was BofA and she immediately said if I had any doubts to please call the main number on the back of the card. I said OK and hung up. I called the main number and indeed, the Delaware number was the official fraud department. I had charged a large amount earlier in the day and they said it was tagged for fraud because it was an unusual trend in my spending habits.

Just to note, when I initially pressed 0, I did get a rep in the USA. When I hung up and called the number on the back of my card, and was transferred to the Fraud Department, the rep was likely not in the USA but I was transferred there directly from the BofA customer service on the back of my card. Just because the person is not in the USA, does not mean it is a scam. Almost every large company outsources now.

So, this is NOT a scam folks. If you do have any doubts though, just call the 800 number on the back of your card, they will look up your account and let you know if they phoned you. If they say no they didnt, you should probably call back again, if the Delaware number keeps calling because the rep who you spoke to may have been wrong. In my experience with customer service reps, almost no two will give you the same answer twice.

I just received a call from 302.731.1166 and it was a foreign person asking for my credit card number.  I declined and asked who i was speaking to and what company, etc.  The woman told me she could not provide me with that information unless I gave her the card number but that they are a card servicing company and work for various credit companies such as Bank Of America... needless to say I hung up.  I immediately contacted Bank of America who told me that nobody was trying to reach me, could not confirm that the number was a Bank Of America number and told me to report the call to abuse@bankofamerica.com

The telemarketer Card Services has already been fined millions of dollars and the FTC keeps shutting them down but they keep moving around and reopening.  Just type "card services" and FTC into google to read all about them.

I just got a call from them tonight on a phone number that's on the DoNotCall registry plus they have called me on my cell phone - which is illegal to do so.  These are scammers. I do not even own any credit cards with Bank of America and never have, nor has anyone tried getting a card under my name.

I've dealt with online scammers for years and have even assisted in getting two put behind bars.  If you get a call that starts out with a recording or a few second delay then it's a telemarketer or scammer.

Make sure your number is on the federal do not call list.  When they call again you let them know and then you go to donotcall.gov and file a complaint.  The last time they called me I informed them I was filing a complaint on the DNC website and the person who claimed to be Bank of America told me to "go f*ck yourself".  Now - does anyone who reads this really think a bank would do that?

If you did make the mistake and gave them credit card info you should immediately put a fraud alert on your credit as well as contact whatever card you gave them.  Chances are they have already charged you the $995.00 fee that they were so famous for ripping people off on.

This is a real Bank Of America phone number.

In fact, if you look at the back of your credit card you'll see a phone number that has the same (302) 73X-XXX area code and prefix.

Bank of America is a HUGE company and probably has tens of thousands of assigned telephone numbers.  As a result they probably have the entire range of the 302 area code's 730 through 739 prefixes.

The phone number you received a call from is most likely one of their fraud detection robo callers.  If you aren't comfortable giving out your private information (which is entirely understandble) to an inbound caller you should just tell them "I'll call you guys back using the number on the back of the credit card."  It's that simple.

Dude, seriously, you are 100% wrong.

The number is the automated fraud detection system calling to let her know about the fraud.

If you look at the back of your credit card you'll see that there isa  number starting with 302-73X-XXXX

BofA is a HUGE company with 10s of thousands of phone numbers.  When a large company has that many numbers the phone company usually gives them those numbers in blocks.  In this case they appear to have all the 73X prefix phone numbers in the 302 area code.

Their automated system uses specific numbers for outbound calling only.  Their inbound phone numbers are different because they are directed to a different system.

As this woman said, her account was shut down completely when she tried to view it online.  That is because their automated fraud system caught some unusual activity and shut the card down, at the same time it attempted to contact the customer in order to have the customer identify charges as correct or fraudulent.

This is fraud. They called me today and I called back. The first thing they asked me for was my credit card number. There was no greeting. I said I don't even know what card you're  asking about because they didn't even announce what company they were from. They didn't ask me for my name or to confirm any information on my account just my card number. I told them I wouldn't give that information out. They would have that if they were really from Bank of America. I then called Bank of America and they told me they would NEVER ask for your card number! That they already have this information. They said there was nothing wrong with my card and that they would report this number to their fraud department.

    Folks,

There is a simple answer. All the sniping back and forth is ridiculous. This number IS Bank of America's fraud. Department. A legitimate call from them asks for no PII (personally identifiable information). From their end, they DO provide PII, and work with you to confirm whether recent activity was legitimate or not.

Now, some people claim to have received calls from this number that were: uninformed, unprofessional, asked for PII, etc. I have no doubt that happens. It is a trivial matter to spoof your phone number. I can call any of you and haev your caller ID display that number or any other.

The key here is to use the same smart tactics many of you mention, regardless of who your think owns the number your phone is displaying. Those smart tactics include: calling back and/or not providing any PII.

I am pretty sure it was Bank of America.  I don't answer call I don't know and they didn't leave a message.   My husband was out of town and we forgot to call.  I also got an email and I talk to my husband and he clarified everything up B of A.  But if I am (or you are) concerned, it doesn't hurt to call the credit card number on the back and ask for the FRAUD DEPARTMENT.  Usually if I have problems, I get a call right after a transaction, and they will keep trying till they get a hold of me to clarify the concern that was found (if I remember correctly).  There are mixed comments here so if you are worried, just call the number on the card to make sure.  Hope this helps.

I am a retiree of BOA.  They called 3 times today.  # listed as Card Services. I finally listened to the message.  It asked if I was indeed this person, if so press 1.  Then they asked if the last 4 digits was my credit card #.  I hung up and called a line for retirees, was transferred to the Fraud Dept.  I told them  why I was calling, they had me verify my password, address and state.  The gentlemen on the line noticed a charge on my a/c they had never seen before and they were holding all transactions until I verified that I had made this charge.  After they verified other transactions I made this same day, they told me they would go ahead and take the HOLD off my a/c.  There are so many fraudulent charges going on it was nice to know they are watching all a/cs to make sure no one else had used my credit card.
